Background / History

Germinal captivity and service

Germinal controlled Hila by holding Aurora hostage and exploiting her healing ability. To keep her sister alive and lessen her suffering, Hila carried out the organization’s bloody assignments. She regarded her failure to protect Aurora as her greatest regret 5 134.

As an executive and supervisor, Hila trained Han Xiao while he was known as Zero. After six months together, she had developed enough attachment to be troubled by the order permitting Lin Weixian to dissect him. Germinal’s treatment of its own members had already cost her numerous friends 5.

Aurora’s rescue and defection

When Han Xiao infiltrated Germinal headquarters to rescue Aurora, Hila detected movement through the life mark she had placed on her sister. Mistaking him for an abductor, she attacked and inadvertently helped expose the escape. Even after recognizing Zero, she initially suspected that he might intend to use Aurora as leverage 240 241.

Aurora’s plea to leave persuaded Hila to cooperate. She guided them through a genuine secret passage and did not betray Han Xiao while he drew away the pursuers. During their escape, she came to trust him enough to entrust Aurora’s future to him if she died 241 244 255.

Hila suffered catastrophic injuries while blocking their pursuers, including shattered bones and a pierced abdomen, but survived through her near-death recovery talent. After reaching safety, she prioritized Aurora’s recovery over revenge against Germinal 258 267 569.

Recovery on Planet Aquamarine

Hila closely guarded Aurora’s recuperation, rejecting experimental blood collection and refusing to use her own aggressive mental ability to interfere with Aurora’s brainwashing. With Han Xiao’s encouragement, she allowed her sister to rest, make friends, and experience life outside captivity 272.

Once Germinal’s defeat and Aurora’s safety removed her immediate reasons to seek strength, Hila felt unexpectedly directionless. She nevertheless declined Han Xiao’s first invitation to leave Planet Aquamarine, choosing to remain with Aurora. He left her keys to his secret base as a precaution against future danger 282 311.

During the Mutation Disaster, Hila’s protectiveness increasingly conflicted with Aurora’s wish to help others. Their disagreement culminated when Hila refused to let Aurora heal Melos. After Aurora insisted that she had her own choices and aspirations, Hila reluctantly allowed the treatment 524 525.

Training under Ames and joining the Army

Han Xiao introduced the sisters to Ames, who recognized similarities between their powers and those of an ancient pair among the First Ones. Hila challenged Ames to prove she was qualified to teach them; Ames responded by pulling a Goddoran escort fleet out of orbit and suspending it above the Sanctuary 556.

Hila subsequently committed herself to training under Ames. Exposure to stronger interstellar opponents intensified her determination to gain power, protect Aurora, and become useful to Han Xiao. After more than a decade under Ames’s guidance, she reached Calamity Grade and joined the Black Star Army with Aurora 575 604 715 731.

Her early Army battles exposed gaps in her experience: Han Xiao judged that she could handle two ordinary Calamity Grades, but not three simultaneously. She continued developing through battlefield soul absorption, fought Hadavy at headquarters, and served among Han Xiao’s guard officers during the Lighthouse Star campaign 734 768 843 846.

Beyond Grade A and the enemy siege

Hila left on a training journey with the stated intention of returning only after becoming a Beyond Grade A. Ames accompanied her during at least part of this period, observing as she strengthened herself against destructive interstellar beasts 926 950.

She returned to Dragon Calm when Tolain challenged Ames. Put forward to fight him first, Hila revealed her Beyond Grade A strength and defeated him, becoming the Shattered Star Ring’s sixth Beyond Grade A. She subsequently became the Black Star Army’s deputy commander 999 1002 1005.

Her confrontation with Gorutan exposed the strategic danger of her lifespan-reducing power. The Arcane Church considered recruiting or eliminating her, while the Federation of Light explored capturing her as leverage over Black Star. During the resulting siege, Hila established her distance-defying connection with Aurora, surviving repeated assaults that would otherwise have overwhelmed her recovery 1017 1018 1019 1020 1049 1051.

Netherland and the World Tree War

Han Xiao brought Hila to Onicelu so that she could inherit the Netherland Dimension. While replenishing its source energy, she learned that the Sanctuary could revive the dead and passed that information to Han Xiao. She also took responsibility for Army affairs during his months-long disappearance 1079 1125 1134 1206.

Hila joined the war against World Tree rather than remain under others’ protection. The battlefield also provided opportunities to strengthen Netherland. She generally sent fallen soldiers of the Three Universal Civilizations there as heroic spirits rather than consume their souls for personal growth 1333 1360.

After Aurora was knocked unconscious, Hila temporarily abandoned that restraint, absorbing the fallen directly and killing two Sacred Tree Envoys. She later undertook secluded training at the Remnant Soul Terminus and emerged capable of using Death God Liberation against the Tranquil Tree King. Although Spirit Burial greatly improved her melee strength, the Tree King eventually destroyed the transformation 1360 1381 1405 1406.

Original timeline

In the storyline remembered by Han Xiao, Germinal dissected Aurora and processed her flesh and blood into healing potions. Hila learned of her death months later, was imprisoned and tortured, and eventually escaped. She then pursued power through indiscriminate slaughter, becoming the feared Goddess of Death who destroyed entire civilizations 5.

Han Xiao’s rescue of Aurora prevented that collapse. The changed Hila still treats enemies ruthlessly, but no longer massacres ordinary people indiscriminately. Her individual growth is slower than in the original timeline, while Aurora’s surviving presence gives her access to far greater cooperative endurance 1018 1026.

Appearance

  • Hair: Long, dark red hair; later described as curly and reaching her waist. Before her training journey, she ties it near the ends rather than wearing it entirely loose 245 926.
  • Face and bearing: Striking features, sharp brows, pale skin, and a habitually cold, expressionless demeanor 691 715 926.
  • Combat clothing: Wears a black combat bodysuit during the Mutation Disaster and later a red, form-fitting suit made from high-strength nanofiber 524 715.
  • Later travel outfit: Dark red-and-black soft-alloy armor styled like a trench coat, paired with close-fitting black protective trousers 926.
  • Power manifestations: Dark red or black-red energy surrounds her during combat; her eyes can glow red when she activates her abilities 241 733 1005.

Personality

Hila is aloof, proud, blunt, and deeply suspicious of others’ motives. Her experience under Germinal leads her to associate kindness with vulnerability and to assume the worst of strangers. She dislikes receiving charity, but carefully remembers favors and prefers to repay them through action rather than repeated expressions of gratitude 272 524.

Aurora is the strongest exception to her emotional reserve. Hila is tender toward her sister but initially struggles to distinguish protection from control, particularly when Aurora wants to use her healing power. Aurora’s insistence on personal autonomy forces Hila to confront how strongly their past suffering still governs her decisions 254 525.

Her pursuit of strength combines fear of helplessness, competitiveness, and a desire to repay Han Xiao. She challenges powerful opponents without much reverence for their status and habitually fights at full intensity, even in private sparring. Although she prefers fierce close combat, she can remain tactically composed enough to exploit enemy troops for recovery or deliberately avoid killing an ally’s valuable combatants 556 715 818 1005 1017 1018.

Abilities & Skills

Power of the Dead

An S-potential Esper ability described as ruling over death and commanding souls. At Beyond Grade A, control over death is identified as an ultra-high-risk Esper ability 141 1000.

  • Mixed damage: Death energy combines physical and psychic damage, later gaining a true-damage component 241 1000.
  • Energy shaping: Can form projectiles, shockwaves, concentrated beams, shields, and large fields of death energy 51 258 733 1005.
  • Vitality destruction: Damages living cells and reduces their remaining capacity to divide, permanently shortening a target’s lifespan 1000.
  • Follow-up damage: After reaching Beyond Grade A, a hit continues dealing damage for three seconds, equal to 50–70% of that hit’s damage 1000.
  • Early limitation: Her rudimentary attacks initially require channeling time and can be interrupted before release 141.

Soul absorption and growth

Hila absorbs residual mental energy from the dead to strengthen her Esper ability. Large battlefields can provide enormous quantities of this resource 729 733.

  • Can gather soul remnants across thousands of kilometers 733.
  • Gains strength from slain lifeforms, including interstellar beasts 950.
  • The Remnant Soul Terminus provides a concentrated source of remnants and greatly increases her power’s corrosiveness 1381 1405.
  • A soul cannot both become a Netherland heroic spirit and fuel her rapid personal growth; she must choose how to use it 1360.

Death Erosion and Death Harvest

At Beyond Grade A, each death-energy hit applies Death Erosion, stacking up to fifteen times 1000.

Stacks Recovery Reduction Defense Reduction Additional Effects
1 20% 15% Initial erosion effects 1000.
5 40% 25% Removes one random buff every ten seconds 1000.
10 60% 35% Reduces all attributes by 10%; randomly removes buffs; inflicts 0.8% health loss every twenty seconds 1000.
15 80% 45% Reduces all attributes by 20%; removes all buffs; inflicts 1% health loss every twelve seconds 1000.
  • Persistence: Duration depends on resistance. Expiration removes stacks one at a time rather than clearing the entire effect 1000.
  • Detonation: At fifteen stacks, Hila can consume the accumulated erosion to trigger an instant-death check without a cooldown. Death Harvest grievously injures Tolain, but consuming the stacks also restores his normal recovery 1000 1001.
  • Mechanical targets: Erosion detonation works on machines. Against Han Xiao’s Apostle Weapons, Hila deliberately uses its damaging effect without triggering the lethal check 1005.

Recovery and survival

Talent / Ability Effect
Rapid Healing At level 40, increases normal health recovery by 500% and recovery while using energy by 1,000–2,000% 141.
Vital Point Immunity Prevents vital-point critical hits 141.
Mental Indifference Grants 20% negative-effect resistance and 30% mental resistance at the documented early stage 141.
Instant Death Immunity Prevents fatal damage and activates a special state below 1% health; lets her survive Han Xiao’s devastating sparring finisher 141 1005.
Soul Immortality Allows her soul to survive bodily destruction with a separate health bar. The soul is physically immune but remains vulnerable to energy and mental attacks 925.
Physical Body Reconstruction Rebuilds a destroyed body with psychic energy, restoring it at 30% health 925.
Multidimensional Energy Absorption Replenishes energy by absorbing free-floating multidimensional energy 925.
Soul Energy Foundation Enables the soul itself to provide and store energy 925.
Lifesteal Converts 10–20% of damage inflicted on targets possessing life force into her own health 1000.
  • Group-combat advantage: Numerous living enemies provide abundant recovery, allowing Hila to endure punishment far beyond her normal limits 1017 1018.
  • Mechanical disadvantage: Ordinary machines provide no lifesteal and are largely unaffected by her psychic damage 1005.
  • Energy limits: As a newly advanced Beyond Grade A, her expensive attacks and limited energy-recovery methods make prolonged duels a weakness 1001.
  • Shared protection: By the aftermath of the siege, she can grant another person one revival, rather than unlimited resurrection 1061.

Symbiosis with Aurora

The sisters’ opposing life and death powers complement one another through their blood relationship and resonating souls 734 1026.

  • Early remote healing: Aurora can transmit vitality to Hila through an established connection between their life forces 734.
  • Distance-defying life link: During the siege, they develop a stronger connection that allows Aurora to heal Hila regardless of distance 1049.
  • Telepathic contact: They can communicate through the connection 1050.
  • Limits: Recovery depends on Aurora’s remaining stamina. It does not prevent capture or restraint, and sufficiently overwhelming attacks can still defeat Hila 1050.
  • Counters: Mental and spatial abilities offer ways to interfere with the shared-life connection 1026.

Mental control and movement

  • Abyss of the Dead: Traps a target’s perception in a dark space filled with resentful souls. Hila uses it to temporarily immobilize Gorutan 1017.
  • Dead Sea Stealth: Partially converts her body into energy and relocates her within an area saturated with death energy. Its cooldown is relatively long 1018.
  • Extradition of the Dead: In the exchange with Gorutan, the energy remnant left after her relocation restrains his arm while his Death Erosion rises from ten stacks to fifteen 1018.
  • Life mark: Allows her to detect movement involving Aurora, alerting her when Han Xiao removes her sister from confinement 240.

Netherland inheritance

The legacy of the previous death Esper, Nigos, supplies both a power boost and inherited methods of using the Power of the Dead 1125 1405.

  • The Netherland Brand strengthens her death energy through her connection with the dimension 1125.
  • She replenishes Netherland’s source energy and sends suitable fallen souls there as heroic spirits 1125 1360.
  • Nigos’s inherited abilities allow her to comprehend techniques without developing every application from scratch 1405.
  • Netherland’s Heroic Spirit Rebirth also depends on Aurora’s life ability reaching Beyond Grade A so that she can create bodies for the spirits 1178.

Death God Liberation

Hila condenses death energy within herself rather than projecting it outward, assuming increasingly powerful transformation stages inherited from Nigos 1405.

  • Spirit Burial: Her documented form is a five-to-six-meter red-and-black giant covered in intricate silver-gray patterns, with a featureless face and white-burning eye sockets 1405.
  • Physical enhancement: Greatly increases strength and resilience, enabling her to contest the Tranquil Tree King in close combat 1405.
  • Contact effects: Physical blows retain psychic damage and corrosion; merely touching her transformed body drains vitality 1405.
  • Heroic-spirit scaling: Deeper fusion with Netherland activates a talent whose bonuses increase with the number and quality of its heroic spirits 1405.
  • Locked ultimate stage: God of the Dead requires an energy level above 90,000 Ona, which she has not reached at its introduction 1405.
  • Limit: The Tranquil Tree King at full power still surpasses Spirit Burial and eventually destroys the transformed body 1406.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Custom combat armor — Han Xiao supplies lightweight red-and-black armor suited to energy release, including a soft-alloy travel suit and protective trousers 733 926.
  • Space-combat life support — A transparent energy membrane protects her uncovered head while preserving a wide field of vision 733.
  • Aurora’s tonics — Carries powerful restorative potions made by her sister during her independent training journey 926.

  • Secret-base keys — Given to her by Han Xiao before his first departure from Planet Aquamarine, for use if the Sanctuary falls into danger 311.

Relationships

  • Aurora — Younger sister and Hila’s principal emotional anchor. Their relationship develops from desperate protection into a powerful life-and-death partnership, though Aurora must assert her independence from Hila’s control 5 525 1049.
  • Han Xiao / Black Star / Zero — Former trainee, early enemy, benefactor, commander, and trusted companion. Rescuing Aurora earns her lasting loyalty; helping and repaying him become major reasons for her training. Their private sparring also brings them closer 5 255 715 1005.
  • Ames — Teacher to both sisters. Hila initially demands proof of her strength, then trains under her for more than a decade. Ames comes to regard the sisters much like her own children 556 731.
  • Onicelu — Netherland’s land goddess and guide to its inheritance. Explains the dimension’s restoration needs and provides information about the Sanctuary 1079 1125.
  • Fording — Fellow Army member who guides her to the Remnant Soul Terminus and remains there to train alongside her 1381.
  • Gorutan — Enemy whose recruitment attempt Hila rejects. Their fight escalates when she attacks his fleet to replenish her life force, deepening his hostility 1017 1018.
