Background / History
Gong Xue was born in Shanghai to a photographer father and an artist mother. Her father often photographed prominent people. After graduating from middle school, she volunteered to work in the countryside at Yangqiao Commune in Fenyi County, Jiangxi 36 38 50.
An injury during her rural work brought her back to Shanghai for hospitalization. While she was recovering, the army recruited performing-arts soldiers; a recruiter who knew her father selected her. She joined the army in 1973. During her first winter field-training march, she struggled to cover fifty or sixty li a day despite being excused from carrying a pack, eventually discovering an egg-sized blister on her foot 50.
The General Political Department Drama Troupe selected her for Ten Thousand Rivers and Mountains, and she remained with the troupe afterward. Before Romance on Mount Lu, her experience consisted of small stage roles and one film, without formal acting training 36 41.
Changchun Film Studio had unsuccessfully sought her for The Lamp. Its later effort to cast her in Sacrificial Red required repeated negotiations with the troupe and a four-month delay. A fracture had prevented her from joining a planned performance trip to Yunnan, leaving her hospitalized while the studio pursued permission to employ her 36.
Appearance
- Face: Palm-sized, with curved brows, expressive eyes, delicately shaped lips, and notably white, even teeth 36.
- Hair: Naturally somewhat curly; permed into more pronounced waves for Zhou Yun 36 40.
- Build and bearing: Medium height, small feet, and a delicate, elegant appearance described as characteristic of a Jiangnan beauty 36 50.
- Audition clothing: Military uniform and cap, paired with white sandals 36.
- Zhou Yun’s styling: A light-purple floral puff-sleeved blouse, red bell-bottoms, high heels, and a small Western-style hat for the leads’ first-meeting scene 40.
Personality
Gong Xue is soft-spoken, introverted, and unusually formal. At her audition, she repeatedly bows and thanks the production team, sitting upright with her hands on her thighs. Her gentle manner contrasts with Fang Shu’s outspoken confidence 36 37.
She is considerate but anxious about social expectations. Before sharing candy from her parents, she asks Wang Haowei how to distribute it without mishandling her relationships with the crew. Being seen talking privately with Chen Qi also makes her self-conscious 42 50.
Beneath her timid manner, she is persistent about improving her work. Rather than accept the crew’s praise at face value, she asks Chen Qi to identify faults in her acting. She is reluctant to expose painful memories and insists that others suffered more than she did, but becomes tearful when admitting how much she missed her parents 48 50.
Abilities & Skills
Acting
Her early performances rely on external gestures and expressions rather than a fully internalized understanding of the character. Coaching helps her make visible progress during the Mount Lu shoot 41 42.
- Multiple roles: Plays a mother, a daughter, and a fairy in Sacrificial Red 36.
- Physical characterization: Learns to convey Zhou Yun’s confidence through an upright posture, frequent smiles, larger steps, and firmer heel strikes 41.
- Naturalistic action: Successfully performs her first scene after being encouraged to enjoy the scenery and take photographs rather than consciously imitate an overseas Chinese visitor 42.
- Emotional performance: Receives praise for a heartbreak scene, although Chen Qi privately considers its style exaggerated and theatrical 48.
- Emotional recall: Chen Qi teaches her to remember her genuine grief and homesickness as material for future performances; the passage does not yet show her applying the lesson on camera 50.
Singing
- Performs “The Spring Water Tinkles” with Zhang Jinling and other women at the crew’s National Day celebration 49.
- Practices for two days beforehand; Chen Qi compliments her singing afterward 50.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Casting in *Romance on Mount Lu*
Chen Qi recommends Gong Xue after seeing her featured in a magazine discussing Sacrificial Red. Wang Haowei investigates her background, obtains photographs through troupe actor Che Xiaotong, and privately invites her to audition before negotiating her release 36.
Gong Xue competes with Fang Shu for Zhou Yun. After testing both actresses in three Hong Kong-bought outfits, Wang favors Gong Xue’s overall impression and lively charm. Once selected, she spends a week at the International Hotel observing overseas Chinese visitors as preparation for the role 37 41.
Filming Difficulties and First Success
At Mount Lu, Gong Xue privately practices wearing high heels, which are unfamiliar to her, and twists her ankle. Her initial rehearsal nevertheless fails because of characterization rather than balance: Wang Haowei finds that she looks like a mainland girl imitating an overseas Chinese visitor 40 41.
Wang brings her to Chen Qi for advice. His blunt criticism initially upsets her, but his practical demonstration makes Zhou Yun’s confidence easier to understand. After several days spent relaxing, sightseeing, and taking photographs, she completes her first scene to Wang’s satisfaction 41 42.
Helping Chen Qi Reach *Story Club*
When Chen Qi asks about the Shanghai magazine Story Club, Gong Xue offers to have her family investigate. She writes to her parents, who send back a copy alongside a letter and White Rabbit candy. She passes the magazine to Chen Qi and shares the sweets as thanks for his coaching. Its submission information helps him identify short fiction as a potential source of steady income 40 42.
Seeking More Honest Guidance
As filming progresses, Wang praises Gong Xue and Zhang Jinling’s growing understanding of their characters. Gong Xue also earns enthusiastic approval for Zhou Yun’s grief-stricken departure, but senses that Chen Qi’s compliment is perfunctory 48.
After the National Day celebration, she asks him directly what was wrong with the performance. Their discussion turns to acting approaches and her own painful experiences. When memories of separation from her parents move her to tears, Chen Qi tells her to retain that feeling for use in her acting 50.
Relationships
- Chen Qi — Recommends her for Zhou Yun and becomes an informal acting coach. She grows to admire him, and his judgment matters enough that she seeks criticism even after receiving widespread praise. Her family’s help also supplies him with Story Club 36 40 41 42 48 50.
- Wang Haowei — Director and patient mentor. Arranges her audition, guides her performance, and advises her on navigating crew relationships 36 41 42.
- Tang Guoqiang — Co-star, playing Geng Hua opposite her Zhou Yun. Encourages her after she successfully completes her first scene 37 42.
- Zhang Jinling — Co-star playing Geng Ying and a companion off set. They rehearse together, take walks, and participate in the National Day singing performance 37 48 49.
- Fang Shu — Roommate during casting and rival for the female lead. Fang likes her and explicitly offers friendship despite their competition 37.
- Che Xiaotong — Fellow troupe actor who helps Wang Haowei contact her and arrange the private audition 36.
- Her parents — Remain in Shanghai and send letters, candy, and the requested magazine. Her longing for them becomes the emotional basis of Chen Qi’s later acting lesson 42 50.
Notable Quotes
“I may not be clever, but I still want to do my very best to make this film well. I hope you can tell me where else I’m falling short...” 50
“I’ve never dared say that, because so many people have had it much harder than me. I’ve already been well looked after.” 50
Trivia
- White Rabbit Cream Candy is her favorite sweet 42.
- Chen Qi recalls the later internet saying “Zhu Lin in the north, Gong Xue in the south”; the narration specifies that the phrase was not current in 1979 36.
- In the original timeline recalled by Chen Qi, she would work with Shanghai Film Studio, transfer there, and win both the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Best Actress awards for Under the Bridge in 1984. These are remembered original-timeline events, not achievements already reached during the Mount Lu shoot 50.
