Liang Xiaosheng grew up in a financially struggling family with an older brother, two younger brothers, and a younger sister. After middle school, he hauled timber in the Production and Construction Corps, earning forty yuan a month to help support his family. He began writing during this period and became a mainstay of the corps’ cultural troupe 14.
In 1974, Liang secured one of only two available places in Fudan University’s Chinese Department through his writing talent. After graduation, he was assigned to Beijing Film Studio’s literary department. At thirty, he was its youngest editor and had not yet established his literary reputation 14.
His family obligations continued after he found stable employment. He sent more than half his wages to his parents, who were in poor health, and also had an older brother with a mental illness. His frank disclosure of these responsibilities during matchmaking meetings was given as the reason he remained unmarried 14.

The narration identifies Liang as a future representative writer of his generation, although he is still a rookie editor when Chen Qi meets him 14.

Appearance
- Build and features: Very thin, with thick eyebrows; his appearance is compared to Tu Honggang’s 13.
- Exercise clothing: Wears a Meihua tracksuit received as someone else’s old clothing, explaining that he could not afford its price of several dozen yuan 16.
Personality
Liang is honest and dutiful toward his family, even when that honesty hurts his marriage prospects. His financial restraint extends to meals: he orders only one fried dough stick for breakfast and claims not to be hungry. Chen Qi recognizes his hardship and shares steamed buns under the pretext of being unable to finish them 14 18.
He is helpful and approachable with younger acquaintances. He offers Chen Qi practical editorial guidance and encourages Ge You before his acting examination. Although eleven years older than Chen Qi, he develops an easy friendship with him and frequently visits his room to exercise, play chess, or talk 17 18 21 28.
Usually reserved, Liang is cautious about sensitive subjects and personal reputation. He warns Chen Qi against publicly associating his exercises with religion and initially refuses to elaborate on gossip about Liu Xiaoqing. His restraint gives way to enthusiasm when Chen Qi’s screenplay is approved, prompting him to shout the news through the guesthouse 16 18 23.
