Background / History
Ji Yin studied under Wu Jishan in high school and gained admission to a prestigious cultivator university more than ten years before his introduction. Wu regarded that admission as the proudest achievement of his teaching career. Despite his subsequent position, Ji Yin continued to treat his former teacher with respect 1.
He attended the Mystic Law College of New Capital Cultivation University, where Yu Zheng was his mentor. Zuo Ling attended university with him, and the two survived life-threatening experiences together. She later became director of the Jiangzhou Region Internal Affairs Bureau and Ji Yin’s immediate superior 25 31.
Appearance
- Build and bearing: Tall and imposing, with a gaze described as commanding respect without anger 1.
- Uniform insignia: Wears a silver, cross-shaped flower, contrasting with the green-leaf insignia worn by the bureau’s low-level cultivators 29.
- Undercover disguise: During the Jiangzhou rescue operation, poses as a traffic officer with a dark face, fleshy cheeks, and stubble, making him unrecognizable as the Ning City director 39.
Personality
Ji Yin’s public authority contrasts with his irreverent private manner. Bureau staff know him for an unpredictable temper and speak cautiously around him, while Lu Yuan comes to find him talkative and teasing rather than aloof. He can also be petty: after losing an opportunity to catch a cult protector, he refuses to arrange a ride home for Lu Yuan and the barefoot Xiao Bing 15 18.
He is quick-thinking and willing to improvise, devising a trap for an unidentified bureau mole without openly briefing Lu Yuan. His judgment is less reliable when overconfidence and carelessness intervene. He sends Lu Yuan undercover without authorization, unaware of crucial intelligence about the cult’s brainwashing ceremony because he had watched cartoons during the headquarters meeting 17 18 31.
His concern for Lu Yuan nevertheless extends beyond official rewards. He secretly provides a defensive technique before the infiltration, urges him to prioritize survival, and later spends his own money on a pill that saves his life 26 40.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Speed
- Crosses several hundred meters in a few airborne leaps while visiting Ningcheng No. 1 High School 1.
- Attacks through a factory wall, tears apart a cultist with his fist force, and breaks both arms of the Two-Leaf Cultivator Zhang Baocheng 16 17.
- Breaks the sound barrier to reach Lu Yuan and kill Guo Huai. The movement leaves tears across his body, which he treats as minor injuries 40.
Great Sound Technique
- Amplifies his voice into a bell-like command, silencing the crowd outside Guanghua School’s examination venue 41.
- Explicitly described as a simple, practical minor technique with no killing power 41.
Body-Protecting Shield Instruction
- Teaches Lu Yuan a breathing method that mobilizes True Essence to strengthen the body and resist damage 26.
- Requires Lu Yuan to memorize the instructions, forbids him from passing them on, and destroys the printed copy afterward 26.
- Warns that the technique is not a reason to confront stronger enemies directly; escape remains the preferred response to danger 26.
Investigation and Covert Operations
- Uses concealed force through a shoulder pat to alert Lu Yuan that their conversation cannot be conducted openly 15 18.
- Follows Zhang Baocheng after the mole abducts Lu Yuan, locating the cult stronghold without alerting him 18.
- Personally works undercover as a traffic officer during the effort to intercept Lu Yuan’s captors 39.
Mystic Law Knowledge and Limits
- Understands that the Divine Land’s low baseline Spiritual Pressure should prevent a powerful mental technique from operating undetected 31.
- Proposes that the Holy Descent Ceremony’s effects originate outside the Divine Land and are projected through a medium; identifies the mysterious bird as a possible key 43.
- Cannot perform the close-range mental detection needed to identify cultists, describing himself as a “half-baked single-flower cultivator” 17.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Blade — Uses it to decapitate Guo Huai while rescuing Lu Yuan 40.
- Essence Restoration Pill — Applies it through Lu Yuan’s lower abdomen to stop his bleeding and stabilize his injuries. It does not eliminate the need for surgery, and Ji Yin cannot claim reimbursement for its use 40.
- Traffic police uniform and flag — Uses them as part of his disguise while checking vehicles near the examination site 39.
Relationships
- Lu Yuan — Civilian collaborator and recipient of Ji Yin’s informal guidance. Their cooperation begins with the Ning City mole trap and develops into a relationship marked by trust, mutual teasing, and repeated rescues 15 18 26 40.
- Zuo Ling — Junior schoolmate, former classmate, longtime companion, and immediate superior. Ji Yin persistently calls her “Ling’er” and flirts despite her objections. Their shared life-and-death experiences underpin a strong professional partnership, but no romantic relationship is confirmed 31 39 43.
- Wu Jishan — Former high school homeroom teacher. Ji Yin bows to him during a school visit and apologizes for not visiting more often 1.
- Yu Zheng — University mentor and an authority Ji Yin admires. Ji Yin directs Lu Yuan toward studying at New Capital Cultivation University as a way to seek Yu’s advice about Twilight Syndrome 25 31.
- Xiao Bing — Kidnapping victim rescued in his Ning City operation. She later delivers the intelligence that prompts him to contact Zuo Ling and organize action against the Jiangzhou cult 17 39.
- Zhang Baocheng — Subordinate exposed as a cult mole. Ji Yin defeats him but cannot prevent his apparent suicide before obtaining the identity of his protector 17 18.
- Shang Qiyuan — Bureau operations staff officer who briefs Lu Yuan on the Jiangzhou infiltration after Ji Yin recruits him 26.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Ning City Patrol
- Visits Ningcheng No. 1 High School to warn students and teachers about nearby cult activity. His patrol is intended both to alert residents and deter hidden cultists 1.
- His airborne arrival convinces Lu Yuan that he has not returned to the ordinary Earth he remembers 1.
Xiao Bing’s Rescue and the Bureau Mole
- Suspects an internal leak after several carefully planned anti-cult operations fail. Xiao Bing’s kidnapping gives him an opportunity to draw the mole out 17.
- Secretly signals Lu Yuan, who invents a claim that Xiao Bing carries a trackable item. Ji Yin publicly throws him out, helping make the bait convincing 15 16 18.
- Follows Zhang Baocheng to the factory and intervenes before he can mutilate Lu Yuan. Bureau personnel subdue the surviving cultists, but Zhang dies before Ji Yin can question him further 17 18.
- Secures ten written-exam bonus points for Lu Yuan and arranges the return of the family’s stolen cooking pot 19 24.
Jiangzhou Undercover Mission
- Offers Lu Yuan an infiltration assignment after he asks how to earn military merit for 200 exam bonus points. Ji Yin explicitly warns that the mission provides no bureau support and may end in an unrecorded death 25 26.
- Explains the benefits Lu Yuan’s family would receive if he died, then gives him the Body-Protecting Shield instructions before sending him to the briefing 26.
- Later learns from Zuo Ling that the Holy Descent Ceremony can warp minds and may require twenty units of Divine Sense to resist. Believing Lu Yuan unable to meet that threshold, he is overcome with regret; Zuo Ling states that she will report his unauthorized deployment for investigation and disciplinary action 31.
Rescue and the College Entrance Exam
- After receiving Lu Yuan’s intelligence through Xiao Bing, contacts Zuo Ling and joins the operation against the cult’s planned examination attacks. He and Zuo Ling recognize that Lu Yuan’s resistance to brainwashing indicates exceptional Divine Sense 39.
- Saves Lu Yuan from Guo Huai, stabilizes him with an Essence Restoration Pill, and agrees to take him to the exam despite the knife still lodged in his chest 40.
- Personally takes responsibility for his admission and assigns two agents to accompany him. When challenged by parents and a reporter, explains Lu Yuan’s role in stopping the cult attack, turning the crowd’s hostility into applause 41.
- Zuo Ling subsequently intervenes, kicks Ji Yin aside, and sends Lu Yuan for immediate surgery 42.
- Responds to Lu Yuan’s request for lodging by arranging transport and four bureau-funded hotel suites for his family 42.
Investigation After the Attacks
- Assists Zuo Ling during the overnight crackdown on Li Tailai’s organization 43.
- Reviews Lu Yuan’s account of the ceremony and develops the theory that its mental effects were projected into the Divine Land from elsewhere. He concludes that the bird-related mystery exceeds the local bureau’s capabilities and recommends referring it to headquarters 43.
