Background / History

Shoto Todoroki enrolled in U.A.'s Hero Course as a powerful recommendation student. He initially relied exclusively on the ice half of his Half-Cold Half-Hot Quirk and considered using his father's fire Quirk a personal boundary. His early assessment of Chiffon was that lightning could pierce his ice, making a fight unfavorable unless he could use fire. 15 21

After observing Chiffon's strength, Todoroki approached him after school and requested a fight. Chiffon declined, but their rivalry began during U.A.'s combat training, where Todoroki and Bakugo fought Chiffon's team. Todoroki froze Chiffon's dominant hand and ultimately acknowledged him as an equal or slightly stronger opponent. 15 19 21

During the League of Villains' assault on the USJ facility, Todoroki rapidly incapacitated numerous villains before a green Nomu shattered his left arm. Chiffon healed the injury with a Quirk Supplement, and Todoroki's respect for him grew into a determination to pursue his strength. 32 33

By the Sports Festival, Todoroki had trained himself to use fire more freely in order to challenge Chiffon.
