History

Trading the Hairy Head Sun Method

Crow Lord first encounters Wentesi after secretly watching his attempt to trap a tusked wild boar. He identifies the boar’s newly awakened Earth Escape ability, then follows Wentesi to its cave to bargain for spiritual ginseng. Mistaking the red dragon for an unusually intelligent lizard, he calls him “Shilongzi” despite Wentesi’s objections 2.

He trades the Hairy Head Sun Method, stored in a silver-sheened feather, for two and a half ginseng roots. The exchange is part of a recurring scam: he sells newly awakened demons a prestigious method they cannot cultivate, then offers another method when they return in distress 2 6.

When Wentesi returns asking why he can cultivate only during daylight, Crow Lord is genuinely shocked. He explains that the [Hairy Head Sun] path has been severed and assumes Wentesi has entered a false version through a Fire Virtue spiritual object. Having already eaten the ginseng, he compensates Wentesi by using his credit at Niu Er’s bookshop to purchase a second-grade Fire Virtue method 5 6.

Crow Lord later interrupts Niu Er’s offer of Buddhist scriptures, warning that their cultivation can turn demons into controlled mounts. He leaves in frustration when Wentesi accepts the teachings anyway, believing him beyond saving 7 8.

Displacement and Pursuit

Crow Lord survives the destruction of Eight Seals Mountain and the Southern Xiang Mountain Range because he is visiting a distant Feather Race acquaintance. The Greater Yin attack kills his friends in the mountains and leaves him wandering between forests 26.

After finding and swallowing a Wind Travel Pearl, he advances to the fourth layer of Embryonic Breathing. While traveling toward a friend in the Chuan Region, he encounters two longstanding enemies—a golden eagle and a firebird—and flees west for six days and nights 26.

Wentesi encounters him badly wounded and defeats his pursuers, including a Hook Snake accompanying them. Crow Lord initially attributes Wentesi’s transformation and strength to a powerful Buddhist master, and remains astonished when the dragon withstands [Wings Fire] 24 25 26.

He refuses Wentesi’s subsequent invitation to become a Field of Merit, declaring that freedom matters more than his life. Wentesi accepts the refusal and instead asks him to escort the converted golden eagle to a large market in the Chuan Region. Crow Lord agrees, while insisting that this small errand does not discharge his debt for being saved 27.

Capture and Second Rescue

During the journey, Crow Lord attempts to rescue the golden eagle from a human cultivator and is caught in the Heaven-Ensnaring Net himself. Their captor intends to sell the birds to the Maple Household, whose [Wind Qi] cultivators can use demons of their own lineage as nourishment 33 34.

Crow Lord invents a powerful “Heavenly Feather Crow Tribe” to intimidate the captor, but the experienced demon hunter recognizes the bluff. Wentesi intervenes through the golden eagle, burns open the net, and carries Crow Lord away. An attack from Wentesi’s true dragon body interrupts the pursuit and allows both birds to escape 34 35.

Green Snake Market and Bai Ling’s Commission

Near Green Snake Market, Crow Lord plans to seek protection through his friend Yan Shijiu and the local Great King Bearded Vulture. Wentesi persuades him to follow him instead. Crow Lord accepts, provided he is not converted into a Buddhist mount 40.

He handles their registration, pays both entrance fees, and finances purchases and other expenses while Wentesi operates through the golden eagle. These costs consume much of his modest savings, making Shu San’s offer of paid work particularly welcome 41 42 43.

Crow Lord and Wentesi accept Bai Ling’s commission to track a late-stage Qi Ingestion Fire Virtue cultivator for twelve Spirit Stones each. Crow Lord retrieves supplies left outside the market by Wentesi, carries Shu San to the operation, and joins the group surrounding Lin Hen. During the battle, he calls out a warning as Lin Hen attempts to break through their positions 44 45 46 47.

Appearance

  • Feathers: Glossy, ink-black plumage when healthy 2 5.
  • Beak and claws: Hooked beak and gleaming claws 5.
  • Injuries: During his flight from the golden eagle and firebird, his feathers become dull and bloodstained, his body bears numerous wounds, and part of his left talon is missing 24.

Personality

Crow Lord is opportunistic, boastful, and practiced at deception. He exploits inexperienced demons’ desire for cultivation methods, but becomes conciliatory when Wentesi confronts him and he doubts his ability to win a fight. His improvised tribal pedigree likewise shows his preference for talking his way out of danger 5 6 34.

His caution does not exclude loyalty. He urgently warns Wentesi against Buddhist enslavement, promises to repay his rescue, and risks capture while trying to save the golden eagle. After Wentesi rescues him again, he openly trusts the dragon’s strength and judgment 7 27 34 35.

Personal freedom is his firmest principle. He would rather surrender his life than become a mount or Field of Merit, yet willingly accepts Wentesi as a leader when that arrangement leaves him unconverted 27 40.

Abilities & Skills

Myna Tongue

An innate Divine Ability that lets Crow Lord communicate directly in another being’s heart and speak intelligibly 2 34.

  • Allows him to address Wentesi before the dragon knows where the voice originates 2.
  • Supports his attempts at persuasion and intimidation, including his bluff about the Heavenly Feather Crow Tribe 34.
  • Does not make his claims inherently convincing; the human demon hunter sees through his fabricated backing 34.

Wind Qi Cultivation

Crow Lord uses [Wind Qi] techniques for aerial movement and escape 24 40.

  • Rides wind currents and reduces air resistance while flying 40.
  • Sustains a prolonged escape from stronger pursuers, though he is badly injured when Wentesi finds him 24 26.
  • Cannot break free of the Heaven-Ensnaring Net unaided 33 34.
  • Struggles to carry the unusually heavy Shu San in flight 46.

Cultivation Knowledge and Bargaining

Crow Lord provides Wentesi’s early explanations of cultivation realms, Dao lineages, severed Sun paths, and Spiritual Qi grades 5 6 40.

  • Recognizes the boar’s Earth Escape and identifies the Hook Snake’s lineage and venomous tail 2 25.
  • Explains the dangers of Buddhist methods that subordinate a practitioner’s body and mind 7.
  • Knows demon markets and their trading customs, though his knowledge of Green Snake Market is limited 6 41.
  • Uses prestigious but supposedly unusable cultivation texts to extract spiritual resources from novice demons 6.

Equipment & Items

  • Wind Travel Pearl — A [Wind Qi] treasure he swallows to reach the fourth layer of Embryonic Breathing; no longer a carried item afterward 26.
  • Earth Virtue spiritual stones — Small spiritual objects kept beneath his wings and used for market fees and purchases 41 42.
  • Communication earring Law Artifact — Supplied for Bai Ling’s operation; relays her summons to the meeting point 44 45.
  • Hairy Head Sun Method feather — A silver-sheened feather carrying the cultivation method, transferred to Wentesi in their first trade 2.

Relationships

  • Wentesi — Initially a target of his cultivation-method scam, later his rescuer and chosen leader. Crow Lord continues calling him “Shilongzi” and repeatedly suspects Buddhist involvement, but refuses conversion himself 2 27 35 40.
  • Niu Er — A familiar bookseller with whom Crow Lord holds credit. Their dealings become hostile when Niu Er offers Wentesi Buddhist teachings 6 7.
  • Golden eagle / Field of Merit — Originally a longstanding enemy. After Wentesi converts it, Crow Lord escorts it toward the market and attempts to rescue it from capture 26 27 34.
  • Firebird — A longstanding enemy who pursues him alongside the golden eagle; killed by Wentesi 25 26.
  • Yan Shijiu — A collared crow friend in the Chuan Region who follows Great King Bearded Vulture 40.
  • Shu San — A market guide who introduces paid work and later rides on Crow Lord’s back to Bai Ling’s operation 41 43 46.
  • Bai Ling — Employs him and Wentesi as aerial scouts for her attack on Lin Hen 44 47.
