Background / History
The Jailer Hall's founding history is fragmented. Its founder is identified as Chen Changsheng, who gathered tens of thousands of Eerie Objects and initially sealed them in Avici Hell; they were later kept in the Great Dream Eerie Path of the Dream Market. 457 Ren Qing later inferred that the organization was not a continuous ancient inheritance: its patriarch may have been a Body Martial Arts cultivator who emerged from a well hundreds of years earlier, collected remnants of the old Jailer Method, and established a new order in Xiangxiang. 321
Its original headquarters was concealed inside Abhidi Hell: the barely living body of the Yang God Realm Taotie Method cultivator known as the Ksitigarbha King. The giant corpse's digestive tract contained prison cells, the Knot Cave, and dangerous remnant souls such as the Corpse Dog Soul, Stinky Lung Soul, and Fei Du Soul. 58 62 66 67 Jailers nearing death traditionally chose cells there to await death. 65
The Hall selected reserve members through a hazardous trial in Abhidi Hell. Although gang-affiliated cultivators were allowed to participate, the apparent purpose was partly to reclaim Eerie Objects; candidates with ties to existing jailers were the true prospects. 63 65 During selection periods, no jailer entered the Hall. 63
After the Great Dream True Person attained the Yang God Realm, Abhidi Hell expanded into part of the Water Marsh Desert. Jailer tokens, keyed to a jailer's blood aura, could then return their bearer to Abhidi Hell from within its range. 188
The Jailer Hall subsequently expanded beyond Xiangxiang. It established Wuwei City in Jingzhou, integrated survivors of the Dao of Non-action Monastery, recruited reserves from Xiangxiang and Shuize, and founded Wuwei Academy to teach children spells. 282 287 292 Its later growth included the Immortality Forbidden Zone, Dream City, the Inner and Outer Layer Worlds, and the world within Ren Qing's stomach. 492 575 580
Organization and Operations
Recruitment and ranks
| Rank / Group | Role |
|---|---|
| Reserve | Probationary member; receives a blood-keyed reserve token and undertakes lower-reward missions. 67 166 |
| Formal Jailer / Prison Guard | Can collect a monthly salary of fifteen stones of Blood Crystal and actively accept Tombstone-posted missions across Xiangxiang. 112 |
| Yin Messenger Realm jailers | Senior cultivators who lead operations, forbidden-zone suppression, and strategic decisions. 191 222 |
| Yang God Realm jailers | Highest documented early combat leadership; later joined by numerous Heavenly Eerie Realm and Earth Immortal cultivators. 343 638 |
- The Hall recruits from gangs and other populations to replenish losses; it recruited twenty to thirty reserves before the Ksitigarbha King soul summoning. 164
- It later encouraged universal cultivation through Body Martial Arts, refining the entry-level Martial Realm into Skin Refining, Blood Refining, Tendon Refining, Bone Refining, and Marrow Refining stages. 502
- The organization includes several affiliated branches and peoples, including original jailers, demon cultivators, Dao of Non-action Monastery insect cultivators, Cocoon People, zombies, and later Worm Cultivators. 466
Missions and enforcement
Formal jailers receive missions through Nether Crows that dissolve into tombstones inscribed with task details and eligibility conditions. 112 The Hall dispatches teams to eliminate forbidden zones, investigate aberrations, inspect suspicious residences, suppress dangerous Eerie Objects, and establish defensive outposts. 166 191 200
- A mission system allows lower-level cultivators to advance through accumulated Blood Crystals. 575
- Jailer tokens permit travel to Abhidi Hell and later access to the world within Ren Qing's stomach through Immortal Keys. 188 575
- The Hall uses the Ghost Market and Dream City to maintain supplies during prolonged campaigns. 580
- Its forces can be assembled rapidly through task postings and coordinated like a war machine. 261
Containment and mutation management
The Jailer Method grants formidable combat power but carries a persistent risk of body-soul mutation and loss of control. 462 492 Aberrant jailers are confined in the Stomach within the Stomach, a prison within Abhidi Hell. 125
- Eerie Dust can alleviate soul mutations and is distributed during mutation incidents. 191 200
- The Great Dream Pavilion eventually stocked thirteen mutation-suppressing materials, enabling pill refiners to derive numerous treatments. 612
- Jailers who die or lose control may return under different identities through corpse-refining methods, contributing to the Hall's unusual tolerance for fatal risks. 455
- Later Jailers completed metamorphosis, cultivated spells like ordinary cultivators, and tended fields within Ren Qing's internal world. 405
Facilities and Resources
- Abhidi Hell — Original hidden headquarters within the Ksitigarbha King's Yang God Realm corpse; houses prison zones, the Knot Cave, and sealed remnant souls. 62 66 67

- Great Dream Artifact Forging — Artifact-forging facility that supplied jailers with soul-defense and other specialized artifacts. 164 172
- Wuwei City — Jingzhou stronghold built and fortified under Jailer Hall supervision; its walls, roads, and buildings were refined into magical artifacts. 287 289
- Wuwei Academy — Educational institution established to teach spells to children and ensure a continued reserve supply. 292
Major Arcs
Abhidi Hell reserve selection
Ren Qing first encountered the Hall during its reserve selection. Candidates entered through a hidden route and were dropped into the decaying interior of the Ksitigarbha King's body, where they faced the Knot Cave, corrosive jailers, abnormal rules, and imprisoned remnants. 57 58 62 65
Ksitigarbha King soul summoning
The Hall prepared a sacrificial altar in Abhidi Hell, recruited reserves, and prompted veteran jailers to acquire artifacts resistant to soul attacks. 164 172 The eventual soul-summoning operation involved the Hall's jailers and exposed the dangers of the Ksitigarbha King's remnants. 178
Water Marsh expansion
Following Abhidi Hell's expansion, the Hall deployed forces to the Water Marsh, created a temporary camp and border defenses, and investigated Qingxu Palace and the Wine and Meat Daoist's corpse. 188 205 237 It intended to transfer the dangerous Heavenly Dao Worm to Abhidi Hell, where it would be contained on Jailer territory. 237
Jingzhou and Wuwei City
After learning of Jingzhou's opportunities and dangers, the Hall agreed to establish a Water Marsh stronghold and send nearly one hundred jailers, including several Yin Messenger Realm cultivators and the Great Dream True Person. 282 It transformed Qingyan Town into Wuwei City, assimilated local cultivators, and developed the city into a fortified settlement. 287 289
Growth into a large faction
The Hall expanded its spell inheritance, artifact production, and population through universal cultivation and the integration of multiple peoples. It later operated under the external identity of the Heavenly Court while sending cultivators into the Outer Layer World for high-risk missions and resource collection. 457 502 576 577
World within the stomach
Within Ren Qing's internal world, the Hall built an Earth Immortal-level shelter and survived a three-thousand-year drought disaster. 638 Afterward, its Jailers clashed with the Heavenly Court over incense worship before joining with the Dragon Palace to reclaim territory; the Heavenly Court ultimately legalized both groups to preserve peace. 638

Trivia
- Jailers are identified by tokens bearing the character “Forbid.” 5
- Few jailers willingly remain in the Jailer Hall because of its dangerous and grotesque environment. 57
- A reserve token is a simple iron token marked “Jailer” and “Reserve,” engraved with its holder's surname; it is not inherently a magical artifact. 67
- The Hall's spell collection grew from an early cache of unused Eerie Objects into a library of nearly a thousand spells. 457 577
