Past relationships and limitations

Yu Xiaogang had a relationship with Bibi Dong more than twenty years before their reunion. Bibi Dong believed he had avoided her for those years, while Yu Xiaogang still addressed her with visible affection when they met again in the Pope's Palace. 145

He later formed a relationship with Liu Erlong. Their intended marriage was interrupted when Yu Xiaogang learned that Liu Erlong was his cousin through his second uncle; Bibi Dong later viewed his life with Liu Erlong as proof that he had forgotten her. 115

Although celebrated as the “Grandmaster,” Yu Xiaogang remained a Soul Grandmaster at Rank 29 and could not advance to Soul Elder. His lack of personal combat growth became a recurring source of criticism from both Su Yi and several Shrek students. 126 145 183

Shrek Academy

Yu Xiaogang returned to Shrek Academy intending to teach there and resumed his role as Tang San's mentor. 76 He recognized Su Yi's abnormal Soul Ring configuration—including a thousand-year second ring and ten-thousand-year fourth ring—as evidence for his hypothesis that a Soul Master's physique determines their absorption limit. 92

Believing Su Yi could validate his unpublished theory, Yu Xiaogang attempted to accept him as a disciple. Su Yi refused because he already had a teacher, leaving Yu Xiaogang regretful that such a gifted prospect was unavailable to him. 92 93

As Su Yi assumed a leading role in Shrek's training, Yu Xiaogang's standing among the students deteriorated. Tang San continued to defend him, but Xiao Wu, Ning Rongrong, and others increasingly considered Yu Xiaogang's teachings inadequate compared with their own efforts and Su Yi's practical instruction. 125 126 132

Spirit City incident and disgrace

Yu Xiaogang visited Bibi Dong to request the secret of cultivating Twin Martial Souls for Tang San. Bibi Dong rejected him, noting that Tang San was Tang Hao's son and therefore a likely future enemy of Spirit Hall. 145

Before he left, Bibi Dong gave Yu Xiaogang a black Desert Eagle for protection. During the confrontation following the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament, Yu Xiaogang aimed the weapon at Bibi Dong to protect the Shrek group; Su Yi took the resulting shot for her. 145 149

Spirit Hall subsequently spread a public account portraying Yu Xiaogang as an ungrateful former elder who had used Bibi Dong's gift to nearly kill her direct disciple. The Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan was annihilated, and Yu Xiaogang became widely condemned across the continent. 151

Capture and death

After Su Yi destroyed Shrek Academy, he confronted Yu Xiaogang, Liu Erlong, and Flender. Su Yi accused Yu Xiaogang of building his Grandmaster reputation by repackaging Spirit Hall's predecessors' theories, shattering Yu Xiaogang's confidence before Liu Erlong and Flender. 183

Yu Xiaogang attempted to fight using Luo Sanpao, but Su Yi impaled the Martial Soul before it could release its skill. The backlash severely injured Yu Xiaogang, and his Martial Soul was destroyed. 184

Su Yi killed Flender and Liu Erlong, then took the physically crippled Yu Xiaogang to the City of Slaughter for prolonged public humiliation and torture. 185 187 192 Tang San eventually found him, but arrived too late to prevent his mental collapse. Yu Xiaogang asked Tang San to live well and avenge those lost before Tang San fulfilled his request by piercing him with an Eight Spider Lance. 196

Personality

Yu Xiaogang was driven by intellectual validation. His interest in Su Yi centered on proving his Soul Ring absorption hypothesis, and he saw Su Yi as an even more promising prospect than Tang San. 92 93

He was deeply attached to Tang San and repeatedly acted with urgency when Tang San was endangered, including organizing the pursuit after Dugu Bo abducted him. 108 Yu Xiaogang's loyalty to Tang San also placed him in direct conflict with Bibi Dong, despite their unresolved feelings for one another. 145 149

His pride and need for recognition made him vulnerable to criticism. When the Shrek students questioned his contribution to their growth, he became despondent; Su Yi deliberately exploited this insecurity to isolate him from those around him. 125 126
