| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mortal — deficient Yi Wood Manifestation | 19 | Despite good aptitude, she lacked sufficient Manifestation to enter the Old Method Dao. She also had no Spirit Root for ordinary New Method cultivation. |
| Preparation for Yi Wood of Spring / Spring of Yi Wood | 30 31 35 | Li Chengxuan identified a narrow path associated with Ancestor Zhuohua’s arrangements. Hua Chunning spent nine months secluded before gathering Spring Qi and preparing to ingest the Fragrance of a Hundred Flowers. |
| Strengthened spring Manifestation | 40 | Completed the Manifestations of Beginning of Spring and Rain Water, plus two pentads of Awakening of Insects. Li Chengxuan judged that this partial season might still support her entry into the Dao. |
| Manifestation and Fate brought to full measure | 41 54 | Liu Zhijian’s recognition of her as his “junior sister” completed the Manifestation and Fate she needed to cultivate. |
| Qi Refining — entry through Qi Ingestion; Yang Spring Manifestation | 61 62 67 68 | Gathered the Fragrance of a Hundred Flowers in the Wu Earth Secret Realm and entered the Dao beneath a peach tree. Her path used Yi Wood as its foundation while drawing upon Lesser Yang. |
The Fragrance of a Hundred Flowers is Lesser Qi rather than Yi Wood Proper Qi. Li Chengxuan warned that relying on it alone would limit her to Qi Refining, without a route to Foundation Establishment; she accepted the opportunity while hoping to remedy that limitation later 31.
Background / History
Rejuvenation Valley and the Hua Household
Hua Chunning was born into the Hua Household’s legitimate branch and raised by her grandfather, Hua Mingcheng. Treated as a figure akin to Rejuvenation Valley’s holy maiden, she grew up hearing of her ancestors’ achievements and aspired to immortality. The household’s Yi Wood inheritance, however, was incomplete, leaving her unable to begin cultivation despite being its most gifted younger descendant 11 19 40.
Her name followed instructions left by High Person Zhuohua, the household’s last Foundation Establishment cultivator. Hua Chunning was the eldest of her generation and was born on the first day of spring. Three younger siblings were born on the first days of summer, autumn, and winter respectively, but all died young 26.
Hua Mingcheng secretly used the Azure Origin Fate-Weighing Plate to assess the clan’s descendants and found that her Fate weighed the most. After unsuccessful appeals to Rosy Clouds Resting Mountain and Supreme Mystery Mountain, he brought her to Li Chengxuan shortly after the latter assumed leadership. Li accepted her service, though he initially warned that she could not cultivate the Purple Mansion Golden Core Dao 3 41.
The Hua Household subsequently divided its support between the Old and New Methods. Its patriarch and direct line relocated beneath Supreme Mystery Mountain, while collateral relatives remained associated with the Azure Cloud Sect. Hua Chunning understood that this arrangement could leave her family caught between the two powers 11 19.
Stewardship in the “Grotto-Heaven”
After recognizing her diligent service, Li Chengxuan offered Hua Chunning an opportunity to replenish her deficient Manifestation. He brought her to Earth, which she understood to be Supreme Mystery Mountain’s Grotto-Heaven, and appointed her to oversee its developing lower court 19 20 21.
She supervised construction and experimented with gardening, healing, and water-pill refining. Li Chengxuan stopped the latter two approaches because they divided her already-weak Manifestation among different paths. Instead, he directed her toward the spring aspect of Yi Wood 24 30 31.
Following nine months of seclusion, she returned to the redesigned Supreme Mystery Sub-Courtyard to gather spring imagery. Her practices included facing the rising sun, planting flowers, observing returning geese and sprouting plants, and performing seasonal sacrifices. Videos of her work and rituals made her an online attraction, while her healing drew patients and increasing official attention 26 35 38.
A Mortal World Tribulation forced her return before she completed the season. Believing she might have ruined her prospects, she sought her grandfather’s reassurance but refused to reveal the Grotto-Heaven’s secret. She also rejected his offer of Human Pills, believing they would conflict with her Dao Path 40 119.
Rosy Clouds Resting Mountain
Li Chengxuan arranged for Xue Yang to escort Hua Chunning to Rosy Clouds Resting Mountain to gather the Fragrance of a Hundred Flowers. There, the Xue patriarch permitted her to enter the Wu Earth Secret Realm and have its seasons adjusted to suit her cultivation 54 57 58.
A visit to Gathering Worthies Mountain confronted her with the lives of fallen immortal-clan descendants working as tenant farmers. Realizing how easily she could have shared their circumstances shook her pride and triggered a Heart Demon Tribulation. She steadied herself by reciting scripture. When Xue Changfeng subsequently demanded that she abandon her costly opportunity, she refused, and Xue Yang intervened on her behalf 59.
Inside the secret realm, she gathered the required fragrance and followed the Four Seasons Cauldron’s pure Qi eastward to a peach tree. Beneath its falling blossoms, she recognized the moment to ingest Qi and enter the Dao. She returned as the Hua Household’s first cultivator in a hundred years 61 67 83.
Travels and the Azure Cloud Sect
After Li Chengxuan’s warnings prompted her to devote herself more rigorously to cultivation, Hua Chunning sensed a spring-related impulse to travel. She descended the mountain with Hua Household attendants and received a prominent welcome at Azure Cloud Market, where she was known as the Fairy of a Hundred Flowers 81 82 83.
She reunited with her cousin Hua Yuhe and visited Yuhe’s husband, Du Qingquan, learning about his Clear Water inheritance and concealed talisman-making ability. She also toured Rejuvenation Valley under Azure Cloud Sect control. Rather than seeking revenge for its seizure, she recognized that her household lacked the power to challenge the larger struggle between the Old and New Methods 84 86 87 89.
During a sparring match, she defeated Lin Xiansheng through peach-blossom illusions, fragrance, and Sha-tainting techniques. When he injured himself to recover his senses and renewed his attack after the match had been stopped, she blocked his giant wooden sword and struck his shoulder with her peach branch 90 91.
Ambush and Return
After leaving Danzhou City, Hua Chunning was ambushed by Xue Changfeng and Daoist Mu. She repeatedly exposed Xue Changfeng inside his Wu Earth formation by sensing vitality and tracing peach-blossom fragrance. An illusory body then deceived the pair into believing they had killed her 110 111.
Lin Yunqing, a New Method Foundation Establishment cultivator, subsequently suppressed her with superior Law Power and trapped her in a cage of roots. Duanmu Ren intervened with a Ding Fire lamp, while Hua Chunning used Golden Arrow Talismans to help break free. After their return, Li Chengxuan praised their efforts but urged them to concentrate on cultivation 112 115.
Hua Chunning later prepared the Sub-Courtyard for Hu Yueqiu and taught her how to replenish Manifestation through seasonal observations. When the Mirror Moon Lake opportunity emerged, she initially chose to remain on the mountain cultivating. Xue Yang later asked her to arrange Hu Yueqiu’s assistance in opening the lake god’s water manor, prompting her to seek her master’s permission 119 145.
Appearance
Hua Chunning is described as exceptionally beautiful, with a graceful figure, striking features, and a lively, intelligent expression. Her ancient-style clothing and ethereal bearing make her conspicuous even at an ordinary construction site 3 21.
- Dress and voice: Wears long, ancient-style dresses and speaks in a cool, clear voice 21.
- Floral fragrance: After entering the Dao, her scent delights Jiang Xiaoyu, who rubs against her to smell of flowers 67 69.
- Rosy-cloud mark: Bears a bright mark on her forehead associated with a spiritually aware rosy cloud 58 62.
- Effects of seclusion: Her nine-month confinement leaves her gaunt, pale, and weak; Li Chengxuan regards this as matching Yi Wood’s winter dormancy before spring renewal 35.
Personality
Hua Chunning is determined to cultivate even when offered only an uncertain, restricted path. She accepts hardship and the prospect of failure rather than surrendering her chance to enter the Dao. Her refusal to yield the Wu Earth Secret Realm opportunity marks a firmer understanding that courtesy need not require sacrificing her own future 30 31 59.
She is also proud and conscious of status. Early on, she feels threatened by the possibility of Duanmu Ren becoming a higher-ranking disciple. Her encounter with impoverished lineage descendants challenges that pride, while later conversations show that she can acknowledge Duanmu Ren’s superior Dao insight without resentment 26 59 74.
Her gentleness appears most clearly with Jiang Xiaoyu and Hu Yueqiu. She indulges the former and advocates for the latter because she recognizes the same frustration of being barred from cultivation. She remains careful with sect secrets, withholding the Grotto-Heaven’s existence even from her grandfather 40 67 69.
Abilities & Skills
Yi Wood and Yang Spring
Her cultivation combines Yi Wood, spring growth, and Lesser Yang, producing the Yang Spring Dao Path 68 69.
- Uses a fragrant spring breeze to stimulate growth, demonstrated by making Jiang Xiaoyu’s hair grow 80.
- Senses life force keenly enough to distinguish a living attacker disguised among sand soldiers 110.
- Can imitate a trace of season-shifting Dao resonance to make a small battlefield more favorable to Yang Spring, but requires the Azure Yang Peach Ascension Talisman’s substantial Law Power to do so 111.
- Continues to focus on Yi Wood because Lesser Yang itself remains too lofty for her present cultivation 68.
Peach-Blossom Illusions, Fragrance, and Sha
Following Li Chengxuan’s advice, she learns illusion methods whose imagery suits spring flowers. Her peach-branch Law Artifact strengthens these techniques 81 91.
- Creates illusory doubles amid drifting peach blossoms, including a decoy convincing enough to withstand an apparent killing blow 91 111.
- Bewilders opponents through floral fragrance and visual confusion 91.
- Turns peach petals red and uses them to taint targets with Sha, progressively dulling their clarity 91.
- Tracks enemies through fragrance carried by the wind 110.
- Aims eventually to deprive enemies of their five senses and attack their spirits and minds; this is an intended direction, not a fully demonstrated ability 91.
Her Yi Wood method and ingested fragrance do not specialize in direct attacks. Against Lin Yunqing, superior realm and ranged sword control keep her suppressed despite her illusions 91 112.
Seasonal Manifestation Gathering
Hua Chunning replenishes Manifestation by aligning her activities and surroundings with spring’s imagery 24 38 40.
- Arranges plants, leaf patterns, and restrictions on metal and fire to reinforce Yi Wood imagery 24.
- Combines ritual offerings, east-wind meditation, planting, and observation of seasonal changes 38.
- Gathers eight spring pentads across three solar terms 119.
- Teaches Hu Yueqiu to adapt the same approach to autumn and Fu Water 119.
Healing and Pill Knowledge
She possesses healing methods inherited from her household and treats illnesses while attempting to strengthen her Manifestation 24.
- Her treatment improves the condition of miners who visit the Sub-Courtyard 38.
- Knows that Blood Qi pills might restore a frail elder’s consciousness but could shorten a mortal’s lifespan 74.
- Agrees to obtain such pills from her clan for Duanmu Ren, asking him to conceal their arrangement from Li Chengxuan 74.
- Her early water-pill refining attempts fail because Earth lacks Spiritual Qi, suitable ingredients, and a pill furnace 24.
Administration and Diplomacy
She manages visitors, construction work, and the daily affairs entrusted to her by the sect 3 21 24.
- Reports information about the Azure Cloud Sect and its New Method requirements to Li Chengxuan 18 19.
- Recognizes how Rosy Clouds Resting Mountain’s subordinate lineages reinforce its Wu Earth Manifestation 58.
- Handles meetings with senior cultivators tactfully; Lin Muyang explicitly notices her social skill 84.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Peach-branch Law Artifact — A flowering branch taken from the peach tree beneath which she entered the Dao. Supports illusions, blocks attacks, and serves as her principal striking weapon 68 90 91.
- Azure Yang Peach Ascension Talisman — A palm-sized wooden Lesser Yang Treasure Talisman bestowed by Li Chengxuan. Nourishes vitality, heals injuries, preserves life, shields her body, and replenishes Law Power. Its protection does not prevent confinement by Lin Yunqing’s roots 82 110 112.
- Golden Arrow Talismans — Gifts from the Clear Water inheritor that counter Wood Techniques; used during her escape from Lin Yunqing’s root cage 112.
- Storage Bag — Used to carry the peach branch after her return from the Wu Earth Secret Realm 68.
