Background / History

Childhood at Mirror Moon Lake

Hu Yueqiu was born beside Mirror Moon Lake after its declining waters had impoverished local fishing families. Her parents threw her into the lake as an infant, but an unidentified rescuer returned her to their doorstep with a valuable spirit fish. They kept her afterward, yet repeatedly complained that abandoning her again might have brought them another fish 117.

She grew up hungry, beaten, and responsible for household work. Her parents’ affection for her younger brother eventually showed her that children were not inherently guilty or undeserving of love. When she sought an education, they treated her ambition as madness, forcing her to drink talisman-ash water and locking her in a woodshed 117.

Unable to pay tuition, she listened outside a neighboring village’s school despite the teacher’s rejection and the pupils’ ridicule. After a night spent watching the autumn moon and its reflection, she discarded her degrading childhood name and named herself Hu Yueqiu. She eventually abandoned hopes of earning a living through literacy after learning that the available apprenticeships and official examinations were closed to women 117.

Becoming a Swordswoman

Inspired by a martial master who could break a tree with one punch, Hu Yueqiu next pursued martial arts. Schools and gangs demanded fees she could not afford. Her opportunity came when that same master—the wounded chief of the lake’s fishing bandits—accepted her help hiding from his pursuers in exchange for instruction 117.

The chief taught her only an ordinary fist technique and later planned to kill her to conceal his whereabouts. Hu Yueqiu acted first, drugging his food and setting fire to his hiding place. She then recovered the ancient sword and heaven-tier sword technique concealed with his sunken boat 117.

When the town’s fishing gang traced the missing treasures to her and began harming others, she confronted it openly. She killed its leader and senior members, destroyed its headquarters, and eliminated several other factions before leaving the region. Her subsequent travels took her through the martial world and eventually into contact with immortal cultivation 117.

Her grandfather told her that the Hu ancestors had inherited Greater Yin. Nevertheless, her own Fu Water Manifestation steadily diminished, preventing her from entering the Dao. Even Rosy Clouds Resting Mountain could not resolve the problem 69.

An Outsider on Supreme Mystery Mountain

Hu Yueqiu stopped Hua Chunning outside Rosy Clouds Resting Mountain and begged to become her disciple. Hua Chunning brought her to Supreme Mystery Mountain and repeatedly sought Li Chengxuan’s help on her behalf 62 68 69.

Li Chengxuan initially suspected that her arrival might involve the Xue Household’s schemes. He assigned her work in the General Affairs Hall rather than immediately supporting her cultivation 67 69 126.

Mistaking Duanmu Ren’s sinister-looking High Shaman cultivation for evil practices, Hu Yueqiu attempted to assassinate him and was captured. Li Chengxuan recognized her sincere chivalry, explained that High Shaman was a legitimate ancient lineage, and allowed her to choose a better Meridian Opening Method 71 73.

She later received the Moon Palace Sword Canon, but struggled to understand it without a teacher. Feeling increasingly superfluous among the mountain’s cultivators, she nevertheless continued practicing until she comprehended sword intent. Li Chengxuan then accepted her as a Registered Disciple and arranged for her Manifestation to be replenished 82 117 118.

Returning Home and Entering the Dao

At the Supreme Mystery Sub-Courtyard, Hu Yueqiu gathered autumn seasonal signs under Hua Chunning’s guidance. Li Chengxuan secured Mystic Marsh Submerged Thunder Qi for her, while Duanmu Ren explained the relationships between Fu Water, Greater Yin, and Mystic Thunder. Her limited education made the scriptures difficult, but she studied diligently and compared their teachings with her experience of lakes and marshes 119 120 121 123.

When her Manifestation continued to diminish, she left to seek another opportunity. Traveling south, she killed the cultivators terrorizing the Zhao Kingdom’s palace, suffering serious injuries despite her superior swordsmanship. While recovering anonymously at an inn, she was proclaimed the kingdom’s Immortal Master Protector 124.

She also visited her old companion Ximen Feixue, but departed after suspecting that his Immortal-Seeking Society might covet her cultivation method. Near home, she reunited with her dying schoolteacher. He regretted his treatment of her and finally taught her openly for a month before dying content 124.

At Mirror Moon Lake, Hu Yueqiu faced her fearful parents and brother but chose to leave without revenge. Studying Duanmu Ren’s treatise, she realized that her lost Manifestations had not vanished: they had become part of her memories. Recalling her life restored the seasonal imagery, and Mystic Marsh Submerged Thunder Qi completed her Fu Water Manifestation 125.

After her successful Qi Ingestion, Li Chengxuan promoted her to Supreme Mystery True Disciple and formally accepted her as his fourth disciple. She subsequently took charge of the Hall of General Affairs 126 127.

Mirror Moon Lake Secret Realm

Hu Yueqiu initially preferred to leave the lake’s opportunities to struggling Rogue Cultivators. She ultimately joined the expedition after an Immortal Alliance decree, her master’s approval, and her own wish to help Liu Zhijian 145 146.

Using Fu Water Law Power, she discovered that the apparent underwater conch residence was an illusion. She correctly identified the true residence as a Divine Dao abode in the Yin World, entered through moon worship, and established a talisman-based method that others could use 147 148.

Inside, she fought Blood Young Master, exposed his deceptive attacks, and killed him with a thunder-charged sword strike. After returning to Supreme Mystery Mountain, she reported the expedition’s dangers and treasures. Li Chengxuan advised her and Liu Zhijian against joining the Flame Mountain mission and planned to send them to the Grotto-Heaven to cleanse their lingering harmful Qi 150 154.

Appearance

  • Childhood build: Described as short and frail, making fist techniques poorly suited to her physique 117.
  • After comprehending sword intent: Her steps became unusually light, while Hua Chunning perceived a sword-like quality in her gaze 118.
  • Cultivation imagery: Carries noble, icy Greater Yin Sword Qi; moonlight surrounded her during her breakthrough beside Mirror Moon Lake 120 125.

Personality

Hu Yueqiu is quiet, persistent, and difficult to divert from a chosen goal. She repeatedly pursued literacy, martial arts, and immortality despite rejection, abuse, poverty, and apparent failure. After comprehending sword intent, she became more patient about finding a viable cultivation path rather than allowing setbacks to overwhelm her 117 118.

Her chivalry is tempered by experience. She acts against those who prey on others, but does not blindly trust former companions or pursue every opportunity. She distinguishes gratitude from resentment, acknowledges Rosy Clouds Resting Mountain’s kindness, and declines to take revenge on her family 124 125 144.

Her years as a struggling Rogue Cultivator leave her sympathetic toward others in the same position. Once secure at Supreme Mystery Mountain, she is willing to forgo additional opportunities rather than compete with people who still lack a path into cultivation 145.

Abilities & Skills

Sword Dao

Hu Yueqiu comprehends sword intent while still a mortal, establishing the foundation of her strongest combat abilities 117 118.

  • Moon Palace swordsmanship: Uses the canon’s techniques with sword intent to kill New Method Body Refining cultivators before entering the Dao herself 124.
  • Recollection of Antiquity: Recalls every detail of a battle with exceptional accuracy, allowing her to analyze an opponent’s habits and deceptions 150.
  • Moonlight reflection: Reflects moonlight with her blade to expose illusions and search for an enemy’s true body 150.
  • Limits: Her pre-cultivation victories still leave her seriously wounded; sword intent does not eliminate the physical disadvantages of fighting cultivators 124.

Fu Water and Greater Yin Imagery

Her cultivation combines Fu Water’s imagery of lakes and storage with Greater Yin’s concealment and lunar associations 123 125 127.

  • Manifestation recovery: Restores apparently depleted seasonal Manifestations by recognizing their presence within her memories 125.
  • Lake perception: Connects with Mirror Moon Lake through Fu Water Law Power and detects that the visible water residence is illusory 147.
  • Yin World passage: Uses her Greater Yin image to return from the lake god’s residence; can also bring others through, though doing so requires effort and their trust 148.
  • Lineage uncertainty: Her grandfather identifies the family as Greater Yin inheritors, but Li Chengxuan initially doubts the claim and lacks scriptures to guide that path directly 69 73 120.

Mystic Thunder

Mystic Marsh Submerged Thunder Qi gives her cultivation the potential to empower both Fu Water and the Sword Dao 120.

  • Thunderous sword strike: Produces lightning and thunder from her blade, killing Blood Young Master despite his higher cultivation 150.
  • Demon-slaying nature: Mystic Thunder is particularly suited to slaying demons 120.
  • Strict condition: Li Chengxuan warns that becoming a demon—or even acting against her own true heart—could cause Mystic Thunder to strike her dead 120.

Practical Skills

  • General administration: Serves as a steward before taking over the Hall of General Affairs 67 127.
  • Fishing knowledge: Liu Zhijian asks her for fishing advice 73.
  • Fish preparation and household work: Her cleaning and cooking skills make her valuable at the inn where she recuperates 124.
  • Seasonal observation: Carefully studies thunder, insect burrows, and changing lake levels to gather Autumn Phenological Periods 123.

Trivia

  • Li Chengxuan records her life as An Account of the Autumn Moon Sword Immortal’s Entry into the Palace of Three Mountains and Nine Phenological Periods.
