Background / History
Jixia upbringing and search for the past
Fang Lin belongs to the Jixia Fang Clan, whose resources give him access to extensive knowledge of cultivation methods, Dao lineages, and historical secrets. His elder cousin, Fang Xiu, is a leading figure of their generation 22 24 25.
His Hearth Fire cultivation involves exploring the mortal world for traces of old faith preserved in mountains, rivers, and relics. Before arriving at Jinping Mountain, he had spent several years investigating True Person Shouhui, also remembered as the Cicada Immortal 8 20.
Meeting Jiang Wangxuan
Fang Lin introduces himself to Jiang Wangxuan aboard a high-speed train bound for Luzhou. Their conversation moves from worldly customs to Dao philosophy and the history of Hearth Fire. Impressed by Jiang’s composure, Fang Lin reveals that True Lord Miaosui used Huaqi to transform the vacant Soaring Fire fruition rank into Hearth Fire 8.
They meet again on Jinping Mountain, where Jiang helps him defeat a spider demon. Its spirit is destroyed by the Blood Slaughter Incantation before they can question it. Fang Lin reports that other captured spiders have met the same fate and suspects a powerful mother spider controls them 16.
The Jinping Mountain expedition
A ring in Fang Lin’s possession reacts near Jinping Mountain. When Jiang infuses it with moon essence, it awakens a jade cicada and releases the brilliance Fang Lin identifies as Radiant Wish. Hoping to strengthen his future Immortal Foundation, Fang Lin enters the mountain with Jiang 17 18.
The pair survive a spider swarm and a blood curse, then defeat the Spider Mother’s Blood Progeny. Fang Lin uncovers a passage beneath the ruined temple, leading into an underground wilderness formed among the roots of an ancient dead tree. There, his connection to the mysterious existence he calls “Him” disappears 19 20 21.
The Southern Fire Spider Mother blames the Fang Clan for the destruction of her people. Fang Lin offers to bring her to Jixia and have his clan assume her accumulated karmic debts and grievances, but she rejects him. Their battle exhausts his protective talisman and leaves him trapped in a frost-covered peach grove 22 23.
Jiang reveals his Grand Yin cultivation, rescues Fang Lin, and restores enough of his strength for him to hold back the Radiant Wish. After Jiang kills the Spider Mother, a faint wisp of that wish follows Fang Lin’s flame back to him. Fang Lin loses consciousness and is carried away 24 25.
Future vision and departure
While unconscious, Fang Lin experiences a future in which he has established his foundation and returned to Jixia. Fang Xiu tells him that a Grand Yin cultivator has been murdered during a Foundation Establishment attempt in Lüyu. Fearing the victim is Jiang, Fang Lin erupts with Hearth Fire before awakening in Jiang’s home 25 26 27.
He attempts to persuade the Jiang household to relocate to Jixia, then urges Jiang himself to make his breakthrough there. Jiang refuses to abandon Lüyu University and its teachers. Fang Lin’s increasingly obsessive deductions cause his true essence and Law Power to become unstable, prompting Jiang to calm him with moonlight 26 27.
Fang Lin leaves Luzhou for Jixia the following morning. His warnings nevertheless influence Jiang, who later chooses to attempt Foundation Establishment immediately and discreetly upon returning to Lüyu 27 30.
Appearance
- Build and face: Burly, with a square face, broad brows, and wide-set eyes; initially appears to be in his thirties 8 16.
- Clothing: A plain indigo Daoist robe bearing dense dark-red flame patterns along its cuffs and lapels 8.
- True essence: Orange-red, with a strong earthy character associated with cooking fire 8.
- Transformed appearance: His Cooking Radiance Kindling King Body stands over three meters tall, with a half-bare torso and black hair streaming behind him like orange-red flame 19.
Personality
Fang Lin is outgoing, talkative, and quick to treat acquaintances as close friends. He freely initiates conversation, praises Jiang’s abilities, and calls him “Brother Jiang” after their brief first meeting. His familiarity repeatedly makes Jiang uncomfortable, while Big Fat Fish criticizes his lack of boundaries 8 16 17.
His pursuit of the Dao is determined but initially overconfident. He continues deeper into Jinping Mountain despite exhaustion and Jiang’s warnings, trusting an auspicious divination and regarding himself as a chosen figure. Losing contact with his mysterious patron and nearly dying forces him to question that confidence 18 20 21 24.
He is deeply grateful to Jiang for saving his life and helping his cultivation. His efforts to prevent Jiang’s foreseen death become so consuming that they aggravate his injuries. Although he cannot persuade Jiang to leave Lüyu, he departs with a sincere promise that Jixia will always welcome him 26 27.
