Background / History

Mount Lao and the Mount Li Encounter

Zilin belongs to the bloodline of the last True Lord who held the Purple Qi Fruition Position. Her elder full sister, Zique, becomes the master of Mount Lao’s Purple Yang Temple 224 268.

As a child, Zilin stole a Law Treasure from the temple and ventured down the mountain. She encountered the Mount Li Foothills Hidden Splendor Awaiting Dawn Hall, which wished to accept her as a disciple. The treasure concealed her Purple Qi ancestry, and the recruitment came to nothing. Zilin later explained that the hall’s Yin-oriented teachings were incompatible with her Yang-aligned cultivation and would have killed her 122.

Her aptitude is complicated by a measure of Terminal Yin destiny despite her Purple Qi bloodline. According to Zique, cultivating Purple Qi alone would ultimately leave her in the Lower Vehicle. The temple considered having her cultivate another Dao alongside it, but that plan was never carried out. Danqiuzi later suggested that the power of Su Yao’s Rainbow Clouds might give her a chance to attain the Dao 272.

The Pear Garden and Proclaiming Earth

Zilin joins Su Yao and Yang Xiu in interpreting the prophecy revealed by their three wooden boxes. They agree to establish and guard the Pear Garden, nurture gifted disciples, and await the appointed time surrounding an emperor’s death 85.

Their assignment is not entirely voluntary. During a discussion of ancient traditions and the imperial household, Zilin’s words are suppressed, and the wooden box apparently influences her into speaking without restraint. The incident leaves her visibly frightened 95.

On Golden Ao Mountain, she stays in Jade-Rinsing Cottage, preferring the quiet guest quarters to her assigned cave abode when not cultivating. She and the other two agree to rotate mountain-watch duties in three-month shifts 102.

During the Pear Garden’s activities, Zilin plays a peasant woman in a performance about the Daze Township uprising. Her denunciation of the Qin emperor moves miners in the audience to tears 117.

Choosing Their Own Path

As the succession crisis and Proclaiming Earth’s reincarnation unfold, Zilin begins questioning whether their elders understand the entire situation. She admits that the preceding events have felt like being pushed through “clouds and fog,” then supports Su Yao’s proposal to seek the Purple Mansion rather than continue waiting for instructions 127 128.

For her breakthrough preparations, she requests Ziwei Condensed Splendor Liquid and a Taiwei Facing Origin Pill from Mount Lao, giving Su Yao a purple jade token so an envoy can collect them 126.

Defending Golden Ao and Nanzhao

Zilin confronts the Hazy Clouds demon Muya outside Golden Ao Mountain despite having only recently stabilized her new realm. She refuses to let him trespass and fights him with Fragrance Condenses Purple 221.

At White Sand Mountain, she oversees the aftermath of a battle against Devil Cultivators, supplies seven allied fighters with pills to purge devil energy, and settles payment with a Demonic Dao collaborator. When he demands additional compensation, she refuses and challenges him to fight. She later describes the cooperation as choosing the lesser evil 227.

In a later battle, Zilin intervenes to protect Yang Xiu from Li Fire, allowing him to concentrate on his own techniques. Their coordinated defense holds against three enemy Spirit Treasures but steadily exhausts them. When Su Yao arrives, she immediately follows his instruction to reinforce the other battlefield 237 238.

Her responsibilities also include commanding Golden Ao Mountain’s defenses during Su Yao’s absence. She assigns Liu Yunhe and Li Siyi to the eastern and western gates after he departs to answer Xuan Yan’s plea for aid 253.

The South Sea and Recovery

In the South Sea, Zilin holds off two Purple Mansion Middle Stage Devil Cultivators, one with two Divine Abilities and the other with three. Both wield Spirit Treasures. Su Yao eventually reaches her and kills one of her opponents 276.

The battle and its aftermath leave her gravely injured and nearly out of Law Power. Su Yao carries her back to Qixia Mountain, where Qingzhu gives her Great Yang Radiant Primordial Pills for treatment. She later emerges from seclusion with her injuries healed 280 286.

After another period of seclusion on the Purple Mansion Continent, Zilin learns from Furong that Su Yao has become a Heavenly Clouds True Lord. Delighted, she accepts a congratulatory gift of Fusang Tree mulberries and immediately leaves for Qixia 298.

Appearance

  • Purple clothing: Usually wears purple robes or palace dress. Her ceremonial deep-purple dress bears intricate Purple Yang embroidery 102 266.
  • Three Yangs motifs: Wears pale-purple robes embroidered with delicate Three Yangs patterns matching those on her Purple Gauze Umbrella 247.
  • Purple Qi mark: A mark between her brows flares when she activates her Divine Ability 221 237.
  • Features: Has fair skin, delicate features, and a slender frame; lingering Purple Qi accentuates her cool, aloof appearance 227 286 298.

Personality

Zilin is proud, steadfast, and strongly committed to the Dao. Yang Xiu describes her as unyielding and unwilling to make the first concession in her relationship with Su Yao. Her determination also makes her reluctant to become someone who must simply be carried forward by a more powerful companion 224 280.

Her caution does not prevent decisive action. Initially alarmed by Su Yao’s bold political speculation, she later openly questions the direction imposed by their elders. In battle, she confronts stronger enemies, identifies where her abilities can best support an ally, and holds her ground under pressure 85 127 221 237.

She is pragmatic rather than rigid about sectarian boundaries: she accepts Demonic Dao assistance when she considers it the lesser evil, but refuses to be intimidated into paying more than agreed 227.

With Su Yao, her reserve gives way to embarrassment, teasing, and flashes of temper. Their private exchanges include poetry, affectionate arguments, and her chasing him with a sword over his failure to prune the osmanthus trees 122 286.
