Background and History

Mortal Origins and Golden Court

Yang Xiu began life as a farm boy and lived in the mortal world for more than ten years before Golden Court discovered him and brought him into the mountains. His memories of ordinary life underpin his concern for common people, distinguishing his outlook from Su Yao’s upbringing among immortals at Qixia Mountain 195 203 225.

Because he entered Golden Court young and lacked an established support network, the lineage selected three outer disciples—Lu Daoyuan, Gong Shouzhuo, and Jing Xuanpu—as his companions. They remained with him for many years and became the peers with whom he could speak most freely 199.

The Pear Garden and Longchuan

At the Pear Garden, Yang Xiu joined Su Yao and Zilin in interpreting prophetic poems revealed by their three wooden boxes. He understood the first poem as directing them to nurture a few gifted disciples, guard the garden, and await an emperor’s death rather than advance Proclaiming Earth rashly. They later arranged rotating three-month watches so that their cultivation could continue 85 102.

Although Golden Court had not accepted disciples for many years, Yang Xiu agreed to supply a Profound Qi cultivation method for Su Yao to teach Ren Han. He also supported teaching Zichuan Great Yang as a countermeasure against Yuanfu’s suspected arrangements 90 91 92.

During the early Longchuan fighting, he held off two Golden Crows without falling into disadvantage before Su Yao intervened. He subsequently performed in plays intended to warn the miners against trusting imperial amnesty; his execution as a Bronze Horse Army soldier occurred within the staged reenactment, not as an actual death 112 114 117 118.

Qingnuo Mountain and the Jade Void Decree

Yang Xiu initially questioned whether Golden Ao Mountain was safe enough for a Purple Mansion breakthrough, fearing attacks or disruption of its earth veins. He nevertheless chose to stand with Su Yao and Zilin, invoking Golden Court’s teachings on calamities and tribulations 126 127.

After attaining the Purple Mansion, he accepted Qingnuo Mountain from Nanzhao’s ruler at the prompting of a familiar mysterious voice. He publicly swore to prevent outsiders from harassing or harming the people within three hundred li of the mountain. When Governor Yang Xuanye pressed him to protect all of Nanzhao, Yang Xiu answered that safeguarding the entire territory was the governor’s responsibility 194.

A Jade Void decree bestowed the Daoist name Void Clarity, admitted him into Golden Court’s “Void” generation, and placed him under Su Yao’s authority in Nanzhao. He then traveled to the sealed Golden Ao Mountain and waited for his friend to emerge 195 198 199 200.

True Martial Mountain’s Gift

After Yang Xiu’s service in Nanzhao, an immortal decree awarded him True Martial Mountain’s Dharma Body method and a spiritual object. Xu Mo explained that the apparent reward was a political trap: accepting would allow True Martial Mountain to claim influence over a Jade Void disciple, while refusing would offend its Heavenly Venerable. No one in Jade Void was willing or able to send guidance 214 215.

Yang Xiu cultivated the method but regarded the resulting mixture of Profound Qi and Divine Sha as a betrayal of Golden Court and the Jade Pure One. He withdrew from his friends and concealed the Dharma Body even in combat. He eventually confessed to Su Yao, who argued that his choices and the people he protected—not the origin of his cultivation method—defined him. Their conversation eased his shame without instantly removing every doubt 225 245 246.

Confronting Proclaiming Earth

Under Eastern Pole Dao Lord’s protection, Yang Xiu accompanied Su Yao to confront the reincarnation of Proclaiming Earth True Lord. Their bestowed Gang Qi allowed them to survive an otherwise devastating attack, but they could only keep the reincarnation occupied; the ruler’s intervention was required to wound him seriously 205 207 257.

Later, Yang Xiu remained behind to face three enemies while sending Mo Li and Xuan Yan to help endangered Nanzhao cultivators. Zilin relieved the pressure from Li Fire, enabling him to use his Golden Armor Robe and strike back with Great Yang Killing Light. Su Yao’s arrival then allowed the allies to divide their opponents 235 236 237 238.

In the final confrontation with Chen Hai, Yang Xiu used the Pure Leaf Calamity-Resolving Silk to dismantle hostile Yellow Springs power and protect Su Yao’s decisive strike. Chen Hai’s body disintegrated, but the True Lord’s wooden casket disappeared into the river after heavenly forces contested it 262.

By his reunion with Su Yao at Jieshi Mountain, Yang Xiu had earned a widespread reputation for punishing evil and upholding good. He accompanied Su Yao south along the East Sea, then parted from him at the great river’s mouth 293.

Appearance

  • Handsome, youthful appearance, usually dressed in golden Daoist robes with a golden bell at his waist 194 198.
  • Profound Qi mark between his brows, resembling a living cloud vortex. It appears grayish-red during an early use of his Immortal Foundation and deepens toward purple as his understanding advances 95 196 198.
  • Contrasting cultivation auras: gray-purple Profound Qi and moon-white True Qi intertwine around him after he cultivates the True Martial Dharma Body 225 242 245.

Personality

Yang Xiu is compassionate but not indiscriminately accommodating. His mortal upbringing makes him determined to protect ordinary people, yet he sets a clear boundary around his Qingnuo oath rather than accepting responsibility for an entire kingdom. He openly disagrees with Su Yao’s narrower concern for his own people without allowing that difference to erase their friendship 194 195 203.

His loyalty to Golden Court is both a source of conviction and a vulnerability. He once understood every step of cultivation as bringing honor to his lineage; being compelled to cultivate True Martial Mountain’s method shattered that confidence. Even knowing his friends would not blame him, he struggled to forgive himself 225.

He combines formal respect with independence. When challenged by Jade Void’s messenger, he argues that revering a decree is not cowardice and that juniors must learn to make trouble, stand their ground, and restrain themselves appropriately 195.

Before reaching the Purple Mansion, the influence of Profound Qi could leave his mind clear one moment and clouded the next. After his breakthrough restored his clarity, he began revisiting doubts about the powers directing events around him 85 201 202.

Abilities and Skills

Profound Qi Fruition

Yang Xiu was born in response to the Profound Qi Fruition, giving him an innate connection to calamities and tribulations 196 293.

  • Draws calamities with far less difficulty than ordinary practitioners, requiring only a small amount of Profound Qi to guide them 196.
  • Before the Purple Mansion, this favor also affected his mental stability. Golden Court’s Secret Methods address the dangers inherent in its cultivation path 85 201.
  • His Profound Qi methods offer greater variety than Su Yao’s sword-based attacks, though Yang Xiu judges their direct killing power inferior 199.

Calamity Befalls Fate

A Profound Qi Fate Divine Ability that contacts existing calamities and brings them down upon an enemy rather than relying primarily on a forceful expenditure of Law Power 196.

  • Summons Wu Earth calamities, lightning punishments, Lesser Yang disasters, and other calamities that leave a trace between heaven and earth 95 196.
  • Manipulates the timing and destination of calamities already embedded in beings’ fates 196.
  • Forms layered defensive shields from lightning, fire, and Wu Earth power 236.
  • Draws down Great Yang Killing Light, used against the emerald luan bird and the red-robed enemy 211 237.
  • Powerful applications remain costly: one ray of Great Yang Killing Light consumed well over half his Law Power during the luan bird’s capture 211.

Mysterious Heaven True Martial Divine Sha Dharma Body

A direct-lineage True Martial Mountain method, also rendered as the Mysterious Heaven Zhenwu Divine Sha Dharma Body 214 245.

  • Condenses a Zhenwu Divine Sha body intended to suppress evil, slay demons, and resist Sha 214.
  • Complements Profound Qi: Profound Qi draws tribulations, while Divine Sha suppresses tribulations and wards off calamities 214 245.
  • Cultivated with the aid of Tortoise-Snake United True Essence, nurtured with Mysterious Heaven True Water for ten thousand years 245.
  • Yang Xiu initially concealed its distinctive Divine Dao presence, limiting his freedom to fight openly 239 245.

Karma Enshrouds the Body

A Profound Qi Body Divine Ability that Yang Xiu announces his intention to cultivate during his period of self-reproach. It is later named among his available combat methods; its specific effects are not described 225 239.

Wield the Harmonious Wind

A protective Gang Qi marvel bestowed for the journey against Proclaiming Earth’s reincarnation 205.

  • Surrounds him with pale cyan Gang Qi that disperses violent Qi and soothes murderous intent and resentment 205.
  • Complements Su Yao’s Quell the Killing Aura: Yang Xiu transforms and disperses what Su Yao restrains 205.
  • Helps dissolve invading Earth Virtue power after both men are struck by Chen Hai 207.

Movement and Perception

  • Golden Light Across the Land: a Jade Void secret movement art that carries him through the Great Void several times faster than an ordinary Purple Mansion Early Stage cultivator 205 210.
  • Immortal Foundation perception: detects the approaching representatives of Comet Light, Jade Spring, Jieshi, and Azure Jade 95.

Equipment and Items

  • Golden bell — A Profound Qi Spirit Treasure naturally suited to his Dao. Its ringing disrupts enemy spiritual power, triggers local calamities, and assists Calamity Befalls Fate. It can also obscure others’ perception during private conversations 197 199 201.
  • Golden Armor Robe — A red-gold Geng Metal Spirit Treasure refined shortly after the Investiture of the Gods. Its “new light” strips attacks of their edge, killing intent, and spiritual power by turning them into “old matters.” Li Fire counters its Geng Metal nature, restricting its usefulness against the red-robed enemy 197 237.
  • Pure Leaf Calamity-Resolving Silk — A Gang Qi Law Treasure that releases mild winds to resolve calamity power. It eases the conflict between his two kinds of Qi and later shields Su Yao while dissolving Chen Hai’s Yellow Springs attacks 258 261 262.
  • Wooden box — One of three linked boxes that reveal prophetic poems when brought together or activated by unusual omens 85 102 104.
  • Void Clarity token — A dark-gray token bearing faint Profound Qi patterns, received around his admission into Golden Court’s “Void” generation 195 196.
  • Storage bag — Contains five or six Spirit Artifacts, three Spirit Treasures, and several bottles of pills when inventoried after his Purple Mansion breakthrough 197.

Relationships

  • Su Yao / Qingyan — Closest friend, fellow combatant, and decree-appointed superior in Nanzhao. Their disagreement over responsibility toward mortals does not break their bond; Su Yao later helps him confront his shame over the True Martial method 195 203 245 246.
  • Zilin — Friend and fellow guardian of the Pear Garden. She supports him against Li Fire, and he later urges Su Yao to acknowledge her feelings rather than leave them unspoken 85 102 237 247.
  • Xu Mo — Senior brother of more than two hundred years. Delivers the True Martial decree and reassures him that changing cultivation methods does not change who he is 214 225.
  • Lu Daoyuan — Longtime companion and protector; the oldest of the three, described as steady and well-mannered 199.
  • Gong Shouzhuo — Longtime companion and protector, noted for strength and loyalty 199.
  • Jing Xuanpu — Youngest-ranking of his three companions, quick-witted and perceptive 199.
  • Ren Han — Prospective recipient of Golden Court’s Profound Qi inheritance. Yang Xiu declines to accept him formally but permits Su Yao to obtain and transmit the method 90 91.
  • Xuan Yan — Ally with whom he is not particularly close. Their stubbornness causes friction, and Yang Xiu objects when Xuan Yan frames Fruition favor as the explanation for his rapid advancement 257 293.
  • Meng Shixi — Nanzhao priestess who presents Qingnuo Mountain on the ruler’s behalf and witnesses his protective oath 194.
