|---|---|---|
| First wyrmling growth period | 2 | Eats eggshell and sleeps for fifteen days as his dragon inheritance emerges and his body develops. |
| Dragonvein Crystal supplementation begins | 12 13 | Sol makes his siblings consume crystal fragments to strengthen them, intending to increase the Mental Power Essence their emotions produce. |
| Seven feet long | 20 | Reaches this length after months of wandering and occasional Dragonvein Crystal portions from Sol. |
| Approximately eight feet long | 29 | Considered robust for a red dragon of his age, though still slightly shorter than Xisitana and far smaller than Sol. |
Appearance
- Coloration: Bright red to scarlet scales 5 42.
- Eyes: Pale gold; become bloodshot when he is overcome by greed for a Dragonvein Crystal 12.
- Build: Initially gaunt and malnourished, but later robust for his age 2 4 29.
- Relative size: Consistently smaller than Sol; by the reunion with Chilier, the difference in their lengths is nearly twofold 9 35.
- Wings: Functional but still developing, limiting his speed compared with the older dragons at the oasis 43.
Personality
Kalpu is proud, hot-tempered, and quick to challenge attempts to order him around. As a hungry hatchling, he attacks Sol alongside Xisitana despite their disadvantage. Repeated defeats eventually make him more cautious, but not less resentful 3 5 6.
Treasure is a particularly effective means of manipulating him. On learning that Chilier has disappeared, he hopes to inherit her estate; later, the promise of a Dragonvein Crystal persuades him to hunt in winter despite his reluctance to leave the cave. He initially values the crystals as possessions rather than food, objecting when Sol insists that they be eaten 11 12 25.
His enthusiasm for violence can overwhelm his judgment. During the attack on the Boarfolk, he and Xisitana become so absorbed in killing that Sol must strike them to make them stop. Nevertheless, Kalpu can stand his ground despite fear: he helps rescue Sol from a fall and blocks an older Blue Dragon during their counterattack 22 23 42.
Abilities & Skills
Fire Breath
Kalpu possesses a red dragon’s innate fire breath, though his breath organs are not yet fully developed 4.
- Can ignite dry wood and burn food remains during nest cleanup 4.
- Uses fire breath alongside Xisitana against centaur warriors 17.
- Can temporarily strengthen his breath by eating Coal supplied by Sol 16 21.
- Breathing fire increases his hunger 4.
Dragon Physiology
His claws, teeth, scales, and strength allow him to hunt and fight at close range 3 5 32.
- Briefly knocks Sol down with a leaping pounce during an early sibling fight 3.
- Attacks Half-Orcs with his teeth alongside Xisitana 32.
- Has innate fire resistance strong enough to lie beside a fire with flames licking his scales 4.
- Can accelerate recovery from injuries through deep sleep 50.
- Remains vulnerable to poison: Green Dragon breath leaves him dizzy and his limbs stiff 46.
Flight
Kalpu can fly, but his immature wings limit his speed and carrying ability 21 42 43.
- Flies with Sol and Xisitana to attack the Boarfolk settlement 21.
- Helps catch Sol during an uncontrolled fall, reducing the impact without stopping their descent 42.
- Is slower than even the White Dragons competing for food at the oasis 43.
Appraise and Perception
Kalpu inherits a true dragon’s instinctive ability to assess valuables and track movement 12 33.
- Appraise: Estimates the value of precious metals, ores, handicrafts, and equipment; recognizes the loss in value when Sol shatters a Dragonvein Crystal 12.
- Movement tracking: Can follow arrows in flight well enough to evade a volley alongside his siblings 33.
Hunting and Cooperation
Kalpu gradually develops from an impulsive novice into a regular hunter 5 25.
- Initially ruins a hare hunt by rushing out while arguing with Xisitana 5.
- Follows Sol’s instructions to approach a bharal from the right and drive it toward him 6.
- Helps bring down a wilderness boar 14.
- Hunts through winter in exchange for Dragonvein Crystal rewards 25.
Equipment / Items
- Shiny stones: Packs them before leaving Chilier’s cave, even after the siblings fail to find her treasure 11.
- Dragonvein Crystals: Receives fragments and whole crystals from Sol as growth supplements or hunting rewards. His desire to hoard them repeatedly conflicts with Sol’s insistence that he eat them 12 20 23 25 43.
- Coal: Consumes portions supplied by Sol to enhance his fire breath before battle 16 21.
Relationships
- Sol — Older brother, leader, protector, and frequent tormentor. Sol monopolizes food, beats Kalpu into obedience, and deliberately provokes his resentment to obtain Mental Power Essence. He also supplies growth-enhancing crystals and protects him from stronger dragons 3 6 13 39 50.
- Xisitana — Older sister and both ally and rival. They cooperate against Sol and outside enemies, but readily fight over food, treasure, and status. Kalpu refuses her demand that he dig her a larger lair 3 6 29 39.
- Chilier — Mother. She provides little care, abandons her offspring, and later recaptures them to strengthen her position within the Blackrock Fort faction. Kalpu attempts to flee when she returns 4 5 35.
- Young Blue Dragons — Rivals at the Dragon Castle and oasis. Kalpu displays defiance despite his fear and helps hold off two of them while Sol fights Virix 38 42.
- Young Green Dragons — Attackers who poison him in his own cave before dragging him outside to be beaten by their coalition 46 47.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Nest Life and Early Hunts
After the hatchlings’ first growth sleep, Kalpu and Xisitana confront Sol while hungry. Kalpu manages to knock him down, but Sol pins him and tears into his head until he cannot resist. Their mother offers little relief: when the younger hatchlings approach her freshly caught boar, Chilier knocks them away rather than sharing 2 3 4.
Sol persuades the pair to hunt outside the cave. Their first attempts are disorderly, and even a successful bharal hunt leaves Kalpu and Xisitana fighting over scraps while Sol eats most of the carcass 5 6.
Flight from the Centaurs
When Chilier fails to return and Sol believes the nest is exposed, Kalpu leaves with his siblings. Away from the cave, Sol introduces them to Dragonvein Crystals—not as treasure to keep, but as food intended to make them stronger and more productive sources of Mental Power Essence 11 12 13.
During the centaur pursuit, Kalpu gathers stones for Sol’s concealed Large Barrel Bomb. He later joins the fighting with enhanced fire breath and helps position a centaur corpse as bait on the bomb 16 17.
New Home and the Boarfolk
After months of wandering, the siblings settle in low hills near a lake and dig a shared shelter. Kalpu accompanies Sol’s conquest of the nearby Boarfolk, attacking enthusiastically until Sol forcibly stops him and Xisitana after the survivors submit 20 21 22 23.
Over winter, Sol turns the younger dragons’ greed into a food supply by offering crystals for hunting. Their growing strength later proves useful during a Half-Orc raid: Kalpu and Xisitana join Sol in battle, escape with him, and accompany his retaliatory pursuit 25 32 33.
Forced Return to Chilier
Chilier returns after joining the blue dragon family of Blackrock Fort. Seeking followers of her own, she decides to reclaim the offspring she abandoned. Kalpu and Xisitana attempt to run on seeing her, but neither escapes capture 35.
Rivalries at the Dragon Castle
At their new home, Kalpu supports Sol’s confrontations with the other dragons despite being outmatched. His most decisive intervention comes when he and Xisitana catch the falling Sol, then keep two Blue Dragons occupied while Sol battles Virix 38 42.
After Sol claims their jointly excavated cave for himself, Kalpu establishes a nearby lair. Proximity offers some protection, but it also exposes him to Sol’s enemies: Green Dragons poison both younger siblings in their caves, and the coalition leaves them bloodied and barely conscious. They witness Sol defeat their attackers and fall into healing sleep, only for him to wake and berate them afterward 39 46 47 50.
