Background and History
Life Before the System
Chen Yuan arrived in the Douluo World years before the story’s opening. Unable to awaken a Martial Soul despite attending Spirit Hall’s tests every year, he supported himself through farming. His crops grew better than his neighbors’ and earned him a respectable income, but his lack of Soul Power made him a persistent target of bullying 1.
After another failed test and a humiliating encounter with the deacon Chen Dong, he returned to his tiled-roof house. His system then appeared, offering five selections from seven powers. He deliberately passed over the Azure Dragon Martial Soul and Yin-Yang Finger, choosing a route to power that did not require awakening a Martial Soul 1.
The Ten-Day Hunt
Before Chen Yuan could safely use his new advantages, the sky screen announced that he would become a god in ten days—and that anyone who killed him within that period would become a god immediately. Villagers rushed to murder him, while Spirit Hall, major sects, and the Shrek group began converging on Shanghao Village 1 2.
His initial escape relied on invisibility, but the sky screen disclosed both his location and methods for exposing him. Once water, leaves, and dust revealed his body, he retaliated with Amaterasu and Susanoo, killing Chen Dong, his former tormentors, and hundreds of other attackers 2 3.
The screen subsequently began broadcasting his voice across the continent. Chen Yuan turned this intrusion into a weapon: he offered supporters positions beneath his future godhood, threatened his enemies with retaliation, and exposed Tang San’s family history, future opposition to Spirit Hall, and transmigrator identity. These revelations diverted part of Spirit Hall’s attention toward Tang San and the Shrek group 4 5 7 8.
Creation of the Undead Legion
Chen Yuan began resurrecting defeated opponents through Impure World Reincarnation. Chu Lan, Shi Kun, Bai Ling, and numerous Soul Grandmasters became soldiers who could recover after apparently fatal injuries. Their existence changed the pursuit: powerful figures increasingly wanted Chen Yuan captured alive so they could obtain his resurrection technique 13 14 15.
After destroying a five-thousand-person force, he raised its three Soul Ancestors and ordered his subordinates to retrieve corpses of Soul Saints or stronger. His threat to resurrect the ancestors and former leaders of hostile factions prompted Spirit Hall and other powers to guard their tombs 18.
Destruction of Spirit Hall Headquarters
Following further battles near Wangyu Town and a failed nighttime ambush, Chen Yuan used his extraordinary speed to launch a surprise attack on Spirit Hall headquarters. There, he combined invisibility and Tsukuyomi to kill defenders before escalating to larger Susanoo forms against Soul Saints, Soul Douluo, and Douluo-level opponents 19 22 23 25 29 35.
With his three-hundred-meter Susanoo, he pinned Xuan Tian and Xuan Hai with giant swords and used Xuan Sheng’s centipede Martial Soul Avatar as a bludgeon. Six minutes of attacks reduced the headquarters to rubble. He then captured surviving experts for further use in his resurrection technique 36 37 38.
By the time he departed, his forces included the resurrected former Popes Qian Heng and Qian Yao and the three defeated offerings. He compelled the offerings to remain in their giant Martial Soul Avatar forms as mounts, publicly declaring that his era had begun 42 43.
Clear Sky Sect and Ning Rongrong
Chen Yuan next targeted the Clear Sky Sect, choosing it because of its fame. Tang Xiao assembled the sect’s elders, Tang Hao, Chen Xin, and two supporting Titled Douluo from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Chen Yuan confronted them with his undead forces and newly deployed explosive flames and eye lasers 44 46 48 49.
After the battle, he resurrected Tang Hao, Tang Xiao, and Chen Xin as subordinates. He then announced that he would attack the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect unless Ning Rongrong became his woman. He later intercepted Ning Rongrong and Gu Rong, killed Gu Rong with lasers, and took Ning Rongrong captive 51 54.
Journey Toward Sea God Island
Chen Yuan departed for Sea God Island with Ning Rongrong and his undead followers. His stated plan was to animate the Sea God statue and gain a god as a subordinate. During the journey, he forced powerful Douluo to cook for him and staged a dragon-shaped flame display that he described as romantic, despite Ning Rongrong’s resistance to her captivity 54 55.
When Bo Saixi attacked, he trapped her in Tsukuyomi and killed Sea Spear Douluo, Sea Delusion Douluo, and Sea Ghost Douluo. He also pursued the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King, which surrendered after seeing the Evil Orca King killed by Tang Hao and Tang Xiao. His subsequent attempt to animate the Sea God statue was still underway in the latest supplied passage 57 58.
Appearance
- Youthful appearance: Described as a young, initially down-and-out man 2.
- Shabby clothing: Wears ragged clothes during his early battles and remains in the same outfit the following day 5 30.
- Distinctive eyes: His Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan has a spinning red pinwheel pattern when activating Tsukuyomi 16.
Personality
Chen Yuan is intensely resentful of the humiliation he suffered before receiving his system. His first reaction to gaining power includes the desire to retaliate against those who called him “Chen the Trash.” Once attacked, he readily kills former tormentors, rejects pleas for mercy, and pursues fleeing enemies rather than allowing them to escape 1 3 22.
His bravado is paired with practical attempts to reduce danger. He initially chooses immortality and invisibility, recruits potential supporters, and exposes Tang San to redirect hostile attention. However, his taunts can undermine those efforts: his provocations sometimes attract more attackers instead of frightening them away 1 5 7 9.
He is theatrical, vulgar, and deliberately humiliating toward opponents. He curses the sky screen before a continent-wide audience, challenges the world to fight him, and forces resurrected enemies to smile for the broadcast. He rejects the label of evil god, yet treats being called a demon as a compliment 4 16 22 38 51.
Chen Yuan also expresses an openly coercive view of power and relationships. He argues that strength determines who prevails, threatens Ning Rongrong’s sect to obtain her, and dismisses her accusations of shamelessness as evidence that she cannot resist him 51 55.
Abilities and Skills
System and Ten-Day Godhood
The system grants Chen Yuan powers through an initial five-out-of-seven selection and subsequent daily Talisman choices 1.
- Chosen rewards: Godhood in ten days, Twelve Talismans, Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, Impure World Reincarnation, and Superman’s Kryptonian Body 1.
- Daily limit: Only two Talismans may be selected per day 1.
- Unconfirmed activation: The initial selection includes the Kryptonian Body, but the supplied passages do not separately establish when it activates or which feats derive from it 1.
- No conventional rank established: Observers attempt to classify his abilities as Martial Soul skills, but he uses them without displaying Soul Rings and explicitly denies that Susanoo is a Martial Soul 8 9.
Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan
His eyes provide Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo, allowing him to attack physically and mentally without an awakened Martial Soul 3 16.
- Amaterasu: Releases black flames from his eyes that rapidly burn enemies, including groups of Soul Elders and Soul Ancestors 18 22.
- Tsukuyomi: Pulls a target’s consciousness into an illusion controlled by Chen Yuan; it can kill or leave victims incapacitated 16 29.
- Manipulated perception: Makes Zhou Laogen believe that he has appeared on the battlefield and poisoned Chen Yuan, although the entire encounter is already an illusion 31.
- Mental torture: Against Gu Gang, disconnects the victim from his Martial Soul and subjects him to repeated sword strikes in an illusion where an outside instant corresponds to five hundred years 29.
- Not uniformly instant death: Chen Yuan states that one Soul Saint survives physically but remains trapped in an inescapable illusion 29.
Susanoo
Susanoo is a giant armed construct that shields Chen Yuan and fights under his control. Its documented forms range from ten to three hundred meters tall 3 35.
- Protection: Blocks barrages of Soul Skills while enclosing Chen Yuan within its body 3 11.
- Sword attacks: Produces enormous blades and long-range sword Qi capable of cutting trenches through the battlefield 17 19.
- Recovery: Reforms damaged limbs, including an arm destroyed by an arrow and legs eroded by a poisonous swamp 32.
- Grappling: Seizes opponents and uses Xuan Sheng’s hundred-meter centipede avatar as an improvised weapon 37.
- Earlier forms can be damaged: The hundred-meter form loses limbs during battle, whereas the three-hundred-meter form withstands the assembled defenders’ attacks without damage 32 35.
Impure World Reincarnation
This technique resurrects the dead as controlled, regenerating subordinates, forming the basis of Chen Yuan’s Undead Legion 13 14.
- Living sacrifices: Uses living people to resurrect dead fighters 15 42.
- Regeneration: Revived soldiers recover and return to combat after being killed 14.
- Compelled obedience: Resurrected experts must follow orders, including serving as mounts, cooking, and smiling for the sky screen 42 51 55.
- Altered appearance: Reincarnated bodies display fragment-like markings; their Martial Souls and Soul Rings appear black 42.
- Countermeasure identified: Bibi Dong and Qian Daoliu conclude that the immortal Douluo must be sealed rather than repeatedly killed 42.
Talisman Powers
The selected Talismans merge into Chen Yuan’s body rather than remaining ordinary carried equipment 1 54.
| Talisman | Power | Demonstrated use or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Dog | Immortality | One of his first two selections; grants immortality 1. |
| Snake | Invisibility | Conceals his body for escape, ambushes, and rest. Water, leaves, dust, and Soul Power probing can expose his position 1 2 3 20. |
| Rabbit | Speed | Enables the extraordinary speed used to overtake fleeing opponents; his movement is described as reaching the speed of light 21 22 45. |
| Horse | Healing and restoration | Identified among his acquired Talismans 21 45. |
| Dragon | Explosive flames | Fires dragon-shaped fireballs from his palms; attacks can be repeated or charged before release 45 49. |
| Pig | Laser eyes | Fires high-temperature cutting beams; used to kill Chen Xin and Gu Rong 45 51 54. |
| Rat | Life | Used in the attempt to animate the Sea God statue and its weapon 58. |
| Chicken | Levitation | Named alongside the Rat Talisman in the chapter introducing that pair 53. |
| Monkey | Transformation | Grants the ability to turn people into animals such as pigs, horses, oxen, and sheep 54. |
| Ox | Strength | Greatly increases his physical strength 54. |
