Background / History
Gao Qiang grew up in a village in Northeast China. Both his parents were farmers, with annual earnings in the five figures. As a child, he helped plant seedlings and harvest rice, or caught shrimp and fish with his friends. Attending high school in the county town widened his experience; he and his classmates secretly watched Hong Kong films in their dormitory, including Once a Thief, God of Gamblers II, and To Be Number One 48.
He did not initially want to study agriculture, but chose it because tuition was inexpensive and government subsidies were available. At university, he shares a dormitory with Zhou Yuwen, Tang Yi, and Lu Cancan 44 48.
Appearance
- Tall and big-built, with slightly dark skin, very white teeth, and a somewhat goofy smile 44.
- More solidly built than Tang Yi 47.
- Arrives at university with old clothes, unbranded sneakers, and worn cloth shoes 45.
Personality
Gao Qiang is outgoing and quick to treat new acquaintances as friends. He welcomes Zhou Yuwen with a cigarette, readily accepts shared snacks, and agrees to exchange bunks with Tang Yi despite having already made his bed. His enthusiasm can become socially awkward: he loudly points out attractive girls and eagerly asks to accompany Tang Yi to meet Xia Hui and her roommate 44 45 47 48.
He is ambitious about escaping the limitations of his rural upbringing. After learning that a Mercedes-Benz E-Class costs over 600,000 yuan, he declares that he will drive a better car after graduation. He believes opportunity and determination can change his circumstances 48.
His confidence also masks embarrassment about money and status. Tang Yi’s expensive clothes leave him visibly uncomfortable, and he instinctively conceals his Coolpad phone when he notices the others using Apple phones. After misunderstanding the card-game stakes, he claims to have forgotten the rules rather than admit his mistake, but still pays the full amount owed 45 50.
Abilities & Skills
Card Games
- Claims familiarity with Fight the Landlord, Guandan, Zha Jin Hua, and Niu Niu, and says he regularly played cards with friends back home 47 50.
- Plays aggressively when holding strong cards, repeatedly using bombs during his first game with Xia Hui 50.
- Is susceptible to flattery: he helps Xia Hui discard a troublesome single card, allowing her to finish her hand and win 50.
- Initially calculates seven bombs as a linear increase to three yuan fifty, rather than the repeated doubling used by the group 50.
Equipment / Items
- Coolpad phone — Used to transfer his card-game payment; he hides it slightly after comparing it with the others’ Apple phones 50.
- Daqianmen cigarettes — His own cigarettes, which he offers to his new roommates 44 45.
- Army-green duffel bag — A worn bag brought to university alongside old clothing and shoes 45.
Relationships
- Zhou Yuwen — Roommate. Zhou declines his cigarette but shares snacks with him. Later, Zhou discreetly tugs his sleeve to help him recognize Tang Yi’s false claim about dating Xia Hui 44 45 49.
- Tang Yi — Roommate and smoking companion. Gao Qiang calls him “Brother Yi” and seeks his company, while Tang Yi alternates between joking with him, showing off his wealth, and privately belittling him 45 47 48 49.
- Lu Cancan — Roommate. Gao Qiang regards the quiet, nonsmoking reader as unlike himself and Tang Yi 44 48.
- Xia Hui — Tang Yi’s former high school classmate. Gao Qiang admires her appearance, mistakenly calls her “sister-in-law,” and later loses money to her at cards. She insults him in Changzhou dialect, which he cannot understand 47 48 49 50.
- Ruan Yu — Xia Hui’s roommate. He encourages her to join the card game, but she declines and reads instead 49.
