The Origins of Pokémon Breeders
Sedai was a legendary figure, born to a farming family before the Pokémon League was established.
It all began with a pet in Mr. Sedai's home: an Eevee.
That Eevee was what made Sedai the first true Pokémon Breeder in history, the founder of the profession, and the driving force behind the establishment of the Breeder Association!
As a child, Mr. Sedai lived during the final years of the Warring States period. He rejected war and was one of the few people who regarded Pokémon as partners.
He and Eevee were very close, and their long life together gave them a deep emotional bond.
One day, Mr. Sedai happened upon a mysterious stone. When it came into contact with Eevee, something astonishing happened: Eevee's entire body began to glow white, and, as time passed, it slowly transformed into an entirely new species!
Eevee, a Pokémon then thought fit only to be a pet, had evolved into a new creature with a body that was blue all over!
Amid his shock and astonishment, Sedai discovered that, after evolving, Eevee's body had a composition very similar to water, allowing it to dissolve in water. It could also predict rain and had mastered many powerful moves that had previously been difficult for it to learn. The strength it displayed was far beyond anything the pet Eevee had possessed.
Eevee's unexpected transformation sparked intense curiosity in Mr. Sedai, who was only a little over ten years old at the time!
He suddenly wanted to understand how Eevee had changed. Why had a delicate pet turned into an entirely new species because of a stone, and gained extraordinary abilities as well?
These were things Mr. Sedai, with his humble origins, had never dared to imagine! Yet the accident seemed to turn Sedai into a different person, awakening his desire to explore the unknown.
Despite his family's objections, Sedai set out on a journey, traveling alone in search of knowledge. During his travels, he bought two more Eevee from elsewhere. Over the course of two years, he also found two other mysterious stones in different places: one was orange-red like fire, and the other shone like lightning. They were utterly unlike the crystal-like stone he had found before!
Under the influence of these two stones, his other two Pokémon, the Eevee, evolved just as he had expected, becoming species entirely different from the first!
Though stunned, Sedai provisionally named them Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon.
After two years of travel, the changes in his three Eevee confirmed quite a few things for Mr. Sedai. At the very least, he believed that an external object could cause a Pokémon to undergo a "mutation," and that this "mutation" seemed to have much in common with evolution!
Next, another question occurred to Sedai: if these mysterious stones could help Eevee "mutate" into more powerful species, could other things fundamentally increase a Pokémon's strength?
Pokémon were mysterious creatures to begin with, favored by nature. Could there be all kinds of undiscovered treasures in the world that were beneficial to them?
Just as a human warrior became more formidable in battle when wielding a renowned sword!
A far longer period of research and exploration lay ahead of Sedai. This time, he spent seven years living alongside wild Pokémon, collecting all kinds of mysterious objects and even wild plants, and luring Pokémon into helping with his research.
Those seven years seemed to show Sedai a new world.
He scraped up a pile of Silver Powder from somewhere, and it attracted many Bug-type Pokémon, who fought over it. The Beedrill that obtained the Silver Powder became fiercer and stronger.
He found a highly concentrated drop of water in a mysterious lake. While his Vaporeon wore it, its control over water improved by more than one level!
Besides that, Sedai discovered many wonderful uses for Berries. As it turned out, they could do much more than simply satisfy hunger!
Learning from failure after failure, Mr. Sedai nearly died in the wild several times over those years in pursuit of his research. Fortunately, his three Eevee remained by his side through it all.
Another twenty years passed, and Sedai was now in his forties. In those chaotic Warring States years, he seemed cut off from the outside world, roaming the wilderness alone in pursuit of what he called "knowledge and truth"!
Just then, the Warring States period ended, and the aristocratic system collapsed. A group of like-minded people, together with their "magical beasts"-Pokémon-worked together for several years to restore peace to the ravaged continent and spread the idea that Pokémon were humanity's companions. The concept that "everyone is equal" burst into public view, and they established the massive organization known as the Pokémon League.
Even now, some people say they were the highest beings among Pokémon, or that they were chosen by the creator of this world to save people from their suffering. Others say they were the first to awaken to new ideas, great revolutionaries.
But there was no denying that, with the support of numerous Pokémon, these people ended the Warring States period. The Pokémon League quickly took power and appeared before everyone as a thriving society of equality and harmonious development. With leaders like these, no one had any complaints. As for the small number of nobles who could not accept it and continued to resist, they too were punished one by one!
The emergence of "equality" and "law" marked another step forward for the civilization of this world. By then, war had ended, and new terms such as "Pokémon" and "Trainer" had entered the public eye...
When Mr. Sedai learned of all this, he was overjoyed. The establishment of human rights and the recognition of Pokémon's status seemed to show him a flame of hope. He could hardly wait to report the results of his research to the League, and, fortunately, Sedai received a great deal of attention.
This knowledge about Pokémon gave many people a broad range of ideas and showed them new directions to pursue. It was at this time that the ancestors of the Joy family saw a business opportunity in it and monopolized knowledge concerning the treatment of Pokémon. Using their exceptional minds, they built an enormous commercial network with remarkable speed. Hundreds of years later, the Joy family had spread across the entire world and become one of its most influential powers.
By now, there was hardly a Trainer who had not received help from Nurse Joy. Behind the Joy family stood a vast body of Trainers. Having continued in this way, their position could no longer be shaken except in a fool's dreams.
As for Mr. Sedai, even after gaining great renown and status, he never abandoned his research. Alongside many like-minded people, he founded an organization and began studying the mysterious creatures known as Pokémon.
Unlike Trainers, they did not deliberately train their Pokémon's strength. If Trainers pursued the "external," continually improving and honing their Pokémon's strength through battle, then they were concerned with the "internal," exploring everything about Pokémon as living creatures: their formation, evolution, growth, and reproduction!
As this system grew more complete, they gave themselves a special name: "Pokémon Breeders."
