Background / History
Military Academy and *Dark Night*
Shen Que and his childhood friend Xilaier enrolled late at a military academy in the northern Empire, leaving them behind other freshmen in Dark Night. The academy used the game's rankings to identify students for early mecha training and potential entry into the elite class. Shen Que believed that careful planning could get them through the bounty hunter storyline within three months and that reliable teammates would let them compete for the top three places on the newbie rankings 25.
He outlined a five-person team consisting of a commander, main attacker, support, ranged attacker, and guide. Judging his mental power stronger than his physical fitness, he considered commander or support for himself. Rather than dismiss Viscount Xiersen's unusual search for a live-in son-in-law, he chose to investigate the quest as a possible route to recruiting teammates 25.
Defense of Xiersen's Territory
During a welcome meal in Xiersen's territory, a level-two pollution tide struck. Shen Que shielded servants despite suffering mental contamination himself. After Yuqing—known in the game as Aili—purified the toxins affecting him and Xilaier, they destroyed the mist beasts sustaining the poisonous fog. Discovering her healing spiritual power, Shen Que concluded that she was a rare guide NPC 33.
At the city gate, he recognized a peak level-four Rock-Armored Beast that should not have appeared until stage ten. He suspected the game had raised the difficulty because a guide NPC was present. During the fight, he pushed Yuqing out of the path of its tail and was injured blocking the blow. He resumed attacking with her mental support, but the battle ended only when the hooded Ajiasi killed the beast in one strike 34.
Shen Que subsequently argued that traveling together would let them share quest progress and benefit from Aili's soothing. Both Yuqing and Ajiasi agreed to join him and Xilaier 35.
Journey toward Rust Canyon
Before leaving the territory, Shen Que created a group chat to coordinate login times, routes, and assignments. He proposed the difficult Rust Canyon route for its quest rewards, treasure chests, and abandoned mecha parts 44.
When a large beast pack pursued the party, he recalled the map and led them through dense woodland toward a narrow canyon, using obstacles to disrupt the pursuit. Trapped between the pursuing pack and two beasts ahead, he assigned Ajiasi the Frost Rabbit while he and Xilaier fought the Hidden Wolf. Following Yuqing's warning about its injured hind leg, he landed a deep wound on that weakness 45 46.
Mining Town and Dolly's Recruitment
The escape cost the party their horses and took them off course. Shen Que rejected returning along the same route because the slain Hidden Wolf's pack might be waiting there, then accepted Ajiasi's proposed detour. They reached an abandoned mining town containing an old mecha repair station 47.
There, Shen Que recognized Dolly's exceptional mechanical knowledge, including her familiarity with an obscure, obsolete Shen Group model. He supported inviting her into the team and assured her that resources would be divided according to contribution. Her acceptance brought the party to five members, enough to qualify for ranked matches 48.
At the repair-station warehouse, he assigned appraisal to Dolly, transport to himself and Xilaier, sales to Yuqing, and guard duty to Ajiasi. Later, he kept watch beside Yuqing while she refined the Frost Rabbit's crystal core and checked her condition after her breakthrough 49 50.
Appearance
- Gold-rimmed glasses: His most consistently described accessory, which he frequently adjusts while thinking or speaking 25 44 48.
- Upright bearing: In the game, he wears a light gray knight's uniform that emphasizes his straight posture 44.
- Youthful appearance at rest: Sleeping with his glasses slipping down his nose makes him look more boyish and less cool or aloof 45.
Personality
Shen Que is composed, methodical, and ambitious. While Xilaier panics over their ranking disadvantage, he writes out a recruitment plan and evaluates their strengths by team role. He also pays close attention to other people's motives, noticing how Viscount Xiersen's priorities change after Aili awakens spiritual power 25 33.
His concern for teammates appears in practical gestures: pouring Yuqing tea when she nearly chokes, preparing a cushion and blanket for camp, and suggesting an inn after learning that sleeping outdoors leaves her sore. He is also tactful, quietly nudging Xilaier when his question about Dolly's choice of major touches on her financial circumstances 44 45 49.
His belief that Aili is an NPC initially shapes his willingness to let her face danger: he reasons that she can respawn if they fail. Later, he recognizes that an NPC's death would erase the particular Aili they know, making her survival a priority during the beast pursuit 34 45.
