Background / History
Early Life and Feud with Yin Xuanzi
Liao Pantu grew up and cultivated in Gold Mountain City. Over centuries of cultivation, he accumulated wealth and studied numerous crafts. Although he loved alchemy from the beginning, his poor aptitude prevented him from achieving what he wanted in the field 87 247 298.
He and Yin Xuanzi studied under the same master and swore a Heavenly Mandate Oath not to harm a fellow disciple. Their feud began when Liao Pantu mistook a treasure supporting Yin Xuanzi’s formation for an ownerless object and sold it. The treasure had reportedly belonged to Yin Xuanzi’s late wife, and its removal nearly caused Qi Deviation during his breakthrough attempt 264.
The buyer could not be traced through the black market. Yin Xuanzi’s pursuit developed into a centuries-long rivalry, with both men eventually reaching Nascent Soul. The feud culminated in Yin Xuanzi extracting and dividing Liao Pantu’s soul; part of it remained sealed for nearly a hundred years 264 526.
Joining Lingxian Sect
Initially introducing himself as Heavenly Net Sect’s grand elder, Liao Pantu tried to recruit Sun Yigao as his disciple. Sun Yigao refused because he already belonged to another sect 67.
Liao Pantu subsequently entered Lingxian Sect as a guest elder for ten years. He asked to be called “Senior Liao” rather than “Venerable Pantu,” fearing that his title might reach his enemy. His initial impression of the sect was doubtful, particularly after discovering that it accepted Xiaoluan, a chicken demon, as a disciple 74.
Learning that Lin Xiao and Sun Yigao had reached unusually high cultivation levels at their young ages changed his attitude. Eager to inspect their cultivation art, he agreed to join and swear a Heavenly Mandate Oath. He dismissed his former sect, which had failed to find him for decades, and received the earth-tier high-grade Peach Blossom Spring Myriad Void Instruction 75.
He came to regard Lingxian Sect as both a promising future and a place where his teachings could survive. After saving Lin Xiao during the Silver Frost Python Demon incident, he was formally recognized as an elder. He later secured Lin Xiao’s permission to become Sun Yigao’s second master 82 87 95.
Protecting and Developing the Sect
Liao Pantu studied the sect’s cultivation methods specifically so that he could teach its members. His first collective question-and-answer session clarified numerous cultivation problems, and Liu Yunan and Mo Yuanjiao both advanced that evening 127.
During Wei Hai’s attack, he used two talismans to delay the Nascent Soul cultivator while the sect sought shelter. When Mo Yuanjiao and General Mo were caught outside, he helped rescue them despite the danger. The village’s defensive formation collapsed before the group reached safety, but pink light carried them to the sect, where the Ten-Li Peach Blossom Tree’s pollen healed the injured 235 236.
His earlier conduct remained a serious issue. In the Green Field Mystic Realm, his actions had been intended to kill cultivators and had left survivors trapped. He later spent his own strength restoring their vitality, consolidating their foundations, and prolonging their lives. When Yuan Qing learned that he was a Lingxian Sect elder, Lin Xiao openly acknowledged both the wrongdoing and Liao Pantu’s subsequent devotion to the sect 359.
Liao Pantu also contributed to construction and administration. He supplied a Mountain-Stabilizing Stone for the newly built First Path, helped build the sect square, and led the formal welcome when Lin Xiao emerged from Nascent Soul seclusion, establishing an example of respect for the sect master as membership expanded 264 418 432.
Research and Restoration
Liao Pantu refused to abandon the Soul Refining Instruction, which represented centuries of work, merely because Lingxian Sect possessed faster methods. Inspired by Jiang Youfu’s Immortal Food Chapter, he researched a fusion with the Original Essence Heart Sutra. This divided attention slowed his personal cultivation 415.
On Everbright Mountain, his cultivation formed a mutually nourishing cycle with the Soul-Nourishing Trees and the mountain’s Yin Qi. His research culminated in the Original Essence Soul Sutra, an independent Heaven Rank method rather than a derivative chapter. Its emergence accompanied the reunion of his soul, his Spirit Transformation breakthrough, and the restoration of his body 526 527 529.
After consolidating his realm, he continued supporting the sect’s operations. He captured Venerable Guijia, Myriad Connections’ leader in the Mortal Realm, enabling a coordinated effort to seize the organization’s remaining informants. Later, he advised Lin Xiao on establishing an Immortal Cultivation Realm base and remained involved in sect affairs while Lin Xiao studied in Great Wind Valley 569 570 604 605 679.
Appearance
- Elderly features: At 522, he looked approximately sixty or seventy and had a beard 76 87.
- Half-dark face: One half of his face is black, while the other is normal or pale. This unusual appearance is attributed to the Soul Refining Instruction 67 569.
- Raspy voice: His voice is compared to a rusty saw when he first introduces himself 67.
- Former soul form: Before regaining his body, he appeared translucent and could emerge from a black jade Soul-Nourishing Pendant, sometimes with the pendant resting on his forehead 151 527.
Personality
Liao Pantu is proud, sharp-tongued, and reluctant to display affection openly. His exchanges with Lin Xiao frequently involve snorts, insults, and complaints, but he still listens to proposals and provides help. Lin Xiao treats this grumbling as familiar rather than as a refusal 566 673.
His early outlook reflects the cultivation world’s harsh survival rules. He does not consider his past violence absolutely right or wrong in isolation, although he feels guilt over leaving people trapped and suffering. Life in Lingxian Sect gradually softens him: during Wei Hai’s attack, he recognizes that he would not previously have risked so much for others. Yuan Qing later notices that his former ruthlessness has given way to the bearing of a kind senior 235 359.
He is patient and persistent in study. Repeated setbacks do not persuade him to abandon alchemy or cultivation-method research, and he answers junior cultivators’ questions without turning anyone away. His pride in Sun Yigao is particularly overt—after becoming the boy’s second master, he spreads the news throughout the sect 95 127 415.
He also values wealth, privacy, and exclusive resources. He initially opposes sharing the sect’s secret realms and worries about its finances, but revises his position after discussion and evidence of the policy’s benefits. When arranging facilities for disciples visiting the cultivation world, he creates a separate space rather than surrendering his private cave abode 597 609.
Abilities & Skills
Soul Cultivation
Liao Pantu specializes in cultivating and sustaining the soul, beginning with his self-created Soul Refining Instruction 67 76.
- Soul Refining Instruction: An earth-tier low-grade, system-rated B-rank method suited to Wood Element Spirit Roots 76.
- Fragmented existence: His divided soul portions can sense one another; he distinguishes them from independent clones 75.
- Soul-body storage: He keeps manuals, research records, and tools within his soul body 91 123 464.
- Sustaining limits: Before restoration, continued cultivation was necessary to prevent his incomplete soul from dispersing 189.
Original Essence Soul Sutra
His Heaven Rank method combines concepts from the Original Essence Heart Sutra with the core of the Soul Refining Instruction 526 529.
- Develops new core content outside the original heart sutra’s framework rather than functioning as a derivative branch 529.
- Enabled his Spirit Transformation breakthrough and bodily restoration 527.
- Provides Law Power reserves far beyond those of Mo Yuanjiao and his companions. Nevertheless, one attempt to contact the distant Lin Xiao through a Lock Ring consumed more than half his reserves 661.
Divine Sense and Restraint
Liao Pantu uses Divine Sense for detection, attacks, communication, and suppression 74 230 570.
- Stunned a Foundation Establishment cultivator with a controlled Divine Sense attack before binding him with a Spirit-Binding Rope 230.
- Suppressed a Myriad Connections subordinate during interrogation 570.
- Entered Venerable Guijia’s combined isolation-and-defense formation unnoticed and captured him despite his Nascent Soul Middle Stage cultivation 569.
- His damaged early soul fragment had limited perception and did not immediately detect the sinister Evil Qi around the sect 74.
Formations and Cultivation Knowledge
Centuries of experience make him an adviser on cultivation methods, sect facilities, travel, and supernatural dangers 80 127 155 342.
- Supplied Spirit Gathering and Concealment Formation diagrams to Lin Xiao 90.
- Set up a formation to block outside Divine Sense probes 123.
- Maintained a cave abode protected by an illusory realm, with an exit that opened at different locations 155 227.
- Taught juniors and offered guidance in artifact refining; later agreed to accept disciples in every listed craft except alchemy 377 440.
- His knowledge is not exhaustive: he could not identify the Taiyin Sealing Formation stone and had never heard of that formation 247.
Alchemy Research and Medicinal Gardening
Although personally untalented at alchemy, Liao Pantu possesses extensive knowledge and a lasting interest in experimentation 87 464.
- Teaches Sun Yigao and researches combining alchemy with other arts, using Liu Qin’s recuperation Pill Formula as a starting point 95 464.
- Identified the rare Silk Moon Orchid in the Yaoguang Small World 364.
- Relocated his medicinal garden into that small world and arranged its continuing upkeep 369 566.
- Guided Sun Yigao through bonding with the Icefield Spirit and supplied materials to feed it 373.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Soul-Nourishing Wood: His damaged soul initially depended on soul-nurturing wood as a residence 80.
- Soul-Nourishing Pendant: A black jade pendant that sheltered his soul, supported cultivation, and allowed him to accompany Lin Xiao 151 189.
- Soul-Nourishing Wood bed: An enormous bed in his hidden cave abode that benefited his Soul Refining Instruction and soothed Divine Sense 152.
- Spirit-Binding Rope: Sealed a captured Foundation Establishment cultivator’s spiritual power 230.
- Spirit-Binding Cage: Used to imprison Venerable Guijia and his subordinate; Guijia’s Law Techniques vanished upon touching its bars 569.
- Research jade slips: Preserved his long-running experiments in combining alchemy with other arts, recovered with his Golden Core soul portion 464.
- Mountain-Stabilizing Stone: Donated to reinforce the mountain beside First Path and prevent landslides or unstable foundations 264.
- Lock Ring: Used for long-distance communication with Lin Xiao, including their discussions about Great Wind Valley 672 673 679.
Relationships
- Lin Xiao — Sect master, rescuer, and trusted companion. Their initial arrangement becomes a close partnership built on guidance, protection, and frequent banter. Lin Xiao promises that the sect will never betray Liao Pantu so long as he does not betray it 74 175 358 359.
- Sun Yigao — His first disciple and alchemy successor. Liao Pantu becomes his second master with Lin Xiao’s approval, collaborates with him on research, and helps him bond with the Icefield Spirit 95 98 373 464.
- Yin Xuanzi — Fellow disciple turned mortal enemy. The sale of a treasured possession began their feud, which eventually led to Liao Pantu’s soul being extracted and divided 264.
- Mo Yuanjiao — Fellow sect member whom he initially rejects because of his Fire Spirit Root. Despite that prejudice, he later risks his safety to rescue Mo Yuanjiao and his father from Wei Hai 110 235 236.
- Xiaoluan — Junior sect member whose human-cultivation studies he privately assists. He later confirms Xiaoluan’s knowledge when the others doubt their ability to teach 441.
