Background / History
Main-Branch Upbringing
Ye Xinlan belongs to the Ye Clan’s main branch and is a standout among its third-generation disciples. Her father, the former patriarch, died more than ten years earlier while leading clan elites on an expedition into ruins. His younger brother, Ye Zhengqing, subsequently became patriarch and treated Xinlan well 1 24.
Her grandfather, Ye Zhong, closely protects her education. He forbids juniors from disturbing her cultivation or alchemy studies before her coming-of-age ceremony. He initially considers her the clan’s best prospect for becoming an eighth-tier alchemist and preserving its standing among the Pill Tower’s Five Great Families 11.
Studying with Ye Qingzhou
Xinlan pursues Ye Qingzhou after he leaves the Scripture Repository, not to defend Ye Xintian but to negotiate for the Crimson Flame Bodhi Scripture. She first offers another cultivation method, a Dou Technique, and fifth-tier alchemy notes in exchange. When Qingzhou refuses to surrender the scripture, she instead obtains permission to study it alongside him, lending him the notes as payment 5 6.
After discovering that Qingzhou has grasped the scripture’s basics overnight, she seeks his instruction and reports his exceptional cultivation and soul talent to Ye Zhong. Her recommendation prompts the Grand Elder to investigate Qingzhou’s character and eventually make him a priority for clan support 11 12 16 21.
Their lessons become a formal arrangement: Xinlan pays a Purple Heart Barrier-Breaking Pill for one year of instruction. She also cooks for Qingzhou and arranges an elder’s help with his spear technique. Rumors exaggerate their private lessons into a romantic scandal, but Ye Zhong orders the rumor-spreaders investigated and punished 11 12 14 15 24.
Diary Revelations and Jia Nan Academy
As a reader of the mysterious diary, Xinlan learns about Gu Xun’er’s powerful background and Xiao Yan’s potential to become a Dou Di. She considers befriending them a possible means of securing the Ye Clan’s future. The signature “Qingzhou” reminds her of her cousin, though she initially treats the resemblance as a coincidence 9 10 26.
Xinlan originally intends to wait three years before attempting Jia Nan Academy’s entrance examination. After reading that Xiao Yan may attend the academy, she considers going earlier and informs Qingzhou that its Inner Academy recruitment team will soon reach Ye City 26.
When Qingzhou decides to attend, she proposes accompanying him as his maid so that she can continue receiving his instruction without first completing the Outer Academy route. He agrees to keep teaching her but urges her to cultivate diligently and qualify independently 27.
Xinlan accompanies him to the recruitment assessment, where Qiu Yue angrily questions their relationship. Qingzhou intervenes on her behalf, beginning a confrontation with the Qiu Family. She later leaves the assessment with him after he qualifies for the Inner Academy; her own admission is not confirmed in these events 33 34 39 40.
Appearance
- Build and features: Slender, with delicate features and a composed bearing unusual for her age 6.
- Glasses: Usually wears glasses and frequently pushes them up when speaking or reacting 6 21.
- Clothing: Wears a blue dress during her first on-page meeting with Ye Qingzhou 5.
- Assessment appearance: Ties her long hair into a high ponytail and switches to lighter, silver-wire glasses, giving her a more spirited appearance 33.
Personality
Xinlan is deeply committed to the Ye Clan’s survival. She supports healthy competition between disciples but insists that they remain united when the clan’s interests are at stake. Despite her privileged position, she refuses to seize Qingzhou’s cultivation method or bypass repository rules, preferring negotiation and formal permission 6.
She is diligent and willing to recognize talent greater than her own. Rather than resent Qingzhou’s progress, she seeks his guidance and urges her grandfather to give him appropriate support. She defends his trustworthiness even though they have only recently become close 11 12.
Her reserved manner changes noticeably around Qingzhou. With others she can seem aloof; with him she becomes affectionate, playful, and openly admiring. She takes his arm, bargains for additional help, and puffs out her cheeks when teased. Her initial confidence that honest conduct will prevent gossip contrasts with the scandalous rumors their lessons actually produce 11 14 27 33.
