Background / History

Cultivation Bottleneck

As the Investiture of the Gods Calamity approached, the Three Xiaos worried that their prolonged stagnation would prevent them from helping the Interception Sect or easing Tongtian’s burdens. Zhao Gongming reassured them that their foundations were profound and offered to introduce them to a secluded expert. They initially doubted that anyone could resolve a problem their Sage master had left unanswered 12.

Tongtian’s subsequent order restricting disciples to within a hundred thousand li of the sect frustrated Yunxiao’s plans to travel in search of opportunities. Zhao Gongming explained that the expert, Lin Tian, lived within the permitted area, and the sisters agreed to visit 19.

First Visit to Lin Tian

Following Zhao Gongming’s instructions, the Three Xiaos concealed their cultivation and slightly altered their appearances. Lin Tian’s ordinary residence and apparent Heavenly Immortal cultivation initially disappointed them. Their assessment changed when Yunxiao identified the goldfish he carried as Yazi, the Dragon Clan’s crown prince 20.

Inside the courtyard, they encountered spiritual Qi purer than Biyou Palace’s, a powerful treasure used as a footrest, and a formation that prevented Yazi from escaping. Watching Lin Tian subsequently tie Yazi to a fence as a supposed guard dog reinforced their belief that their host was unfathomably powerful 21 22 23 24.

Yunxiao requested cultivation guidance, but their concealed identities led Lin Tian to mistake them for low-level cultivators. Tongtian’s urgent summons interrupted the discussion. Before leaving, Yunxiao presented Lin Tian with the Golden Flood Dragon Scissors, and the sisters took his advice about walking their own Dao as profound instruction 25 26.

Investigation of Western Influence

On returning to Biyou Palace, the Three Xiaos learned that the Western Teachings had planted spiritual roots in several attendant immortals’ primordial spirits. Tongtian ordered the sisters to examine the primordial spirits of all inner and outer disciples for additional Western pawns 27 28.

They later returned from carrying out his decree but found Biyou Palace sealed while Tongtian met with Duobao. Rather than wait outside, they decided to seek Lin Tian’s guidance again 44.

Discovery of the Books

During their second visit, the sisters found Lin Tian using their treasured scissors to trim plants. While he prepared tea, Qiongxiao discovered Covering the Heavens with One Hand beneath the stone table. Bixiao proposed that Lin Tian had deliberately left it for them as indirect guidance that would avoid entangling him in karma; the others accepted her explanation 45 46.

After reading more than half the book, all three sensed insights and obtained Lin Tian’s permission to borrow it. They prepared to leave for secluded cultivation. Before departing, Yunxiao delivered Zhao Gongming’s six additional Sea-Calming Divine Pearls and received Perfect World to take back to him 49 50.

Appearance

The Three Xiaos appear as three beautiful women whose mist-wreathed arrival displays a presence stronger than many other disciples 12.

• Yunxiao — Wears a snow-white, one-piece Daoist dress. She has slender brows and is later described as having an aloof demeanor 12 14.
• Bixiao — Wears a jade-green Daoist robe and has a beautiful oval face with a gentle expression 12.
• Qiongxiao — The shortest sister, with a youthful, little-girl-like appearance and large, lively eyes 12.

Personality

Yunxiao usually acts as the group’s spokesperson. She questions Zhao Gongming’s claims about Lin Tian, asks for cultivation guidance on her sisters’ behalf, and insists that they approach his residence on foot out of respect. She also reprimands Qiongxiao for suggesting that Duobao could be led astray by the Western Sages 19 20 25 44.

Bixiao often reassures or reasons with the others. She comforts Yunxiao during their first journey to Lin Tian and later supplies the explanation that turns the discovered book into a perceived cultivation opportunity. Its characters’ affection and loyalty leave a particularly strong impression on her 20 46 49.

Qiongxiao is curious, excitable, and comparatively outspoken. She welcomes their outing as a chance to clear their heads, discovers the books while her attention wanders, and cries over the story of Empress Ruthless 20 45 49.

Flight and Concealment

The sisters can travel through the air and disguise themselves 12 20.

• Conceal their cultivation presence and slightly alter their appearances before meeting Lin Tian 20.
• Descend from the clouds and continue on foot when approaching his courtyard respectfully 44.

Spiritual Perception

Their spiritual senses allow them to identify unusual presences and examine treasures 20 22.

• Their frequent contact with Dragon Clan descendants makes them sensitive to dragon aura; Yunxiao recognizes Yazi through his presence and horns 20.
• They probe Lin Tian’s wooden zither, but its overwhelming presence extinguishes their divine senses 22.
• Qiongxiao uses divine sense to retrieve the books beneath the table 45.
• Their cultivation allows them to read more than half of Covering the Heavens with One Hand in roughly half an incense stick’s time 49.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

• Golden Flood Dragon Scissors — A Supreme-Grade Innate Spiritual Treasure formerly cherished by the sisters and kept by Yunxiao for self-defense. Formed from two flood dragons, it cuts its target in two. Yunxiao gives it to Lin Tian, who uses it for gardening 26 44 45.
• Covering the Heavens with One Hand — Borrowed from Lin Tian after its story awakens cultivation insights in all three sisters. They believe he prepared it specifically to address their bottleneck, although that intention is their interpretation 46 49.
• Sea-Calming Divine Pearls — Six pearls entrusted to Yunxiao for delivery to Lin Tian, bringing Zhao Gongming’s total gift to twelve; they are not the sisters’ own treasure 44 50.
• Perfect World — Given to Yunxiao to deliver to Zhao Gongming. She regards it as a further opportunity for him 50.

Relationships

• Tongtian — Their master. They are anxious to support him during the approaching calamity, and he entrusts them with screening the sect for Western influence 12 28.
• Zhao Gongming — Their senior brother, who calls them his younger sisters. He encourages them through their stagnation, introduces them to Lin Tian, and entrusts Yunxiao with delivering his gifts 12 20 21 44.
• Lin Tian — Their host and perceived senior guide. Their initial skepticism becomes deep respect after witnessing his courtyard’s wonders and gaining insights from his advice and books. He remains unaware of their true identities and initially misunderstands their cultivation level 20 22 26 49 50.
