Background / History
Origin and Early Discipleship
Tongtian originated from Pangu’s Primordial Spirit and is the third brother of the Three Pure Ones, after Laozi and Heavenly Venerable Yuanshi. The three originally maintained close ties and shared the Three Pure Ones Hall on Kunlun Mountain 64 73 114.
He accepted Lin Yunji as his disciple and gave him a Sea-Calming Spirit Pearl. Although Tongtian acknowledged privately that he had provided relatively little guidance, he took immense pride in Lin Yunji’s rapid growth and encouraged him to cultivate diligently 2 4.
Tongtian brought Lin Yunji to hear Hongjun preach, then reprimanded him for sleeping through the lecture. His anger reflected concern that disrespecting the world’s only Sage could expose his disciple to consequences he could not prevent 4 11. By their next reunion, he had accepted that Lin Yunji’s unusual breakthroughs belonged to his disciple’s own opportunities and secrets 14.
Founding and Expanding the Jie Sect
After attaining Sagehood through the Jie Sect’s establishment, Tongtian defended a doctrine of teaching without distinction. His belief that sincere pursuit of the Dao mattered more than origin or aptitude brought him into direct conflict with Yuanshi’s selective approach to discipleship 71 73.
Tongtian left Kunlun Mountain after their argument and returned with Daoist Duobao as a new disciple. He subsequently announced recruitment across the Primordial Wilderness, drawing countless beings to the mountain 78 79 80.
He organized the recruits into personal, inner, and outer disciples, while placing Lin Yunji outside and above those ranks. After accepting the Three Xiao Sisters, he publicly authorized Lin Yunji to teach and supervise his personal disciples on his behalf 80 82.
Protecting Lin Yunji
Tongtian joined the other Three Pure Ones in attempting to secure Primordial Expanse purple qi for Lin Yunji. When Zhunti tried to seize it, Tongtian deployed the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation, enclosing the assembled Sages and powerful cultivators 110 111 112.
During the search for the Chaos Pearl, he warned Lin Yunji against displaying such a coveted treasure and remained alert for an attack. He later fought Yangmei’s Devil Creatures and stood with Lin Yunji when Yangmei demanded the pearl 126 129 130 132.
As Lin Yunji surpassed him, Tongtian’s pride in his disciple remained intact. He openly celebrated Hongjun’s revelation that Lin Yunji had completed the Primordial Wilderness’s Heavenly Dao, and rejoiced when the Three Xiao Sisters attained Hunyuan 163 174.
Later Sect Leadership and Source Realm Travels
The elevation of Jie Sect disciples to Hunyuan attracted another wave of prospective students to Kunlun Mountain. Tongtian was left to address the influx while Laozi and Yuanshi declined to expand their own lineages 177. Later, amid chaotic heavenly secrets, he recalled Jade Wanderer Palace’s disciples and ordered them to remain within the sect for a thousand years while he expounded the Great Dao 247.
Before the Three Pure Ones traveled through the Source Realm, Lin Yunji placed life-saving divine light on each of them. Tongtian understood the concern but complained that the arrangement made the elders seem like disciples setting out under Lin Yunji’s protection 293.
When a Supreme destroyed Lin Yunji’s protective Law Body and attacked the survivors, Tongtian counterattacked with four Primordial Expanse Spirit Treasure swords. Lin Yunji subsequently drove the Supreme away and reunited with the group 351 352.
In the Tenth Heavenly Tier Domain, Heavenly Venerable Huangque and nearly a hundred Supremes confronted Tongtian’s side. Lin Yunji intervened, punished the attackers, and refused to let his master and martial uncles bow to him. Tongtian was moved by his disciple’s enduring respect but ashamed of having caused him further trouble 430.
Appearance
- Facial hair: Has a beard and mustache, repeatedly described as bristling when he becomes angry or embarrassed 4 39 70.
- Sage presence: Appears seated cross-legged upon a cloud, surrounded by faint radiance and an ethereal Dao rhythm that blends with heaven and earth 81.
- Bearing: His solemn, dignified presence inspires onlookers to kneel, even while he sits quietly with his eyes closed 81.
Personality
Tongtian is expressive, quick-tempered, and easily drawn into banter. He laughs loudly over his disciples’ achievements, quarrels with Yuanshi over teaching methods, and frequently threatens to discipline Lin Yunji after being teased 4 73 117. Once Lin Yunji becomes stronger than him, those threats become a recurring source of embarrassment: Tongtian admits that attempting a beating might result in his own defeat 149 150.
His affection for Lin Yunji is deeper than his concern for authority. He regards his disciple as his closest family and feels excitement rather than resentment at the prospect of being surpassed 64. He respects Lin Yunji’s private opportunities and continues to support his growth without insisting on an explanation 14.
Tongtian’s inclusive teaching philosophy is a matter of conviction. He considers living beings equal in their right to seek the Dao, rejecting the dismissal of students solely for inferior aptitude or unconventional origins 73. That openness does not mean an absence of discipline: he demands harmony, respect, and proper seniority within the sect, with severe punishments for betrayal or unprovoked trouble 82.

Notable Quotes
“The Jie Sect I founded has no such restrictions. I believe in teaching all without distinction! I am willing to enlighten all living beings and seize that one chance for them!” 73
“Hahaha! Why do you say that, Second Senior Brother? Though Yunji is my disciple, he is just as much yours! Why should the three of us draw distinctions between one another?” 4
