Conflict
Su Ye and An Mu were also drawn into the private room by the enthusiastic tugs of several old classmates.
But a girl sitting near Wu Zhaolong looked at Su Ye with a trace of hostility.
Su Ye sensed it too. He turned to look in her direction, then looked away after a moment.
The girl's name was Zhang Qian. She and Su Ye had been interns at the same company, and later they had both been transferred to Lingnan.
Su Ye had been forced to resign because he had caught her up to no good with the manager!
But why is he looking at me like that? Could his boss have seduced him and then dumped him? Su Ye wondered inwardly.
The door closed again, and the private room returned to its lively bustle.
Su Ye and An Mu sat off to one side, drinking and shooting the breeze with a few old classmates.
At the front of the room, Wu Zhaolong asked Zhao Shanshan, who was sitting nearby:
"Shanshan, what song do you want to sing? I'll queue it up for you."
Zhao Shanshan answered without thinking, "My throat's a little uncomfortable. Pick one for Hanxue instead."
Wu Zhaolong then asked Li Hanxue, "Hanxue, what do you want to sing?"
Li Hanxue thought for a moment before saying, "Queue up 'Angkor Wat' for me!"
Wu Zhaolong queued up the song and handed Li Hanxue the microphone. She took it and began to sing:
"Open my eyes and dream a dream"
"I ask you, what good does it do to take me home?"
"Though I know your woman silently gives you her devotion"
"..."
As soon as Li Hanxue began to sing, the whole room fell silent. Her voice seemed to carry a bewitching power that swept over everyone.
Even Su Ye, sitting off to the side, was momentarily stunned. She sang really well, and the song continued.
"My heart's voice is buried in a cave"
"God fools me time and time again"
"I can hear the wind beside my ears, yet I cannot escape your face"
"The more I try to withdraw, the closer I move into your life"
"Do I really have the courage to celebrate the day itself with you?"
"Do you really have the courage to go back on your vow of fidelity?"
"..."
Li Hanxue's melodious, achingly beautiful voice made the song sound just like the original. When she finished, the room erupted in applause.
Even the male classmates gathered together drinking and chatting began talking about her.
"Hey, how come I only just noticed how pretty Li Hanxue is?"
"I was thinking the same thing, haha."
Wu Zhaolong, who was standing nearby, also came back to his senses. He thought to himself, Angkor Wat? Could this girl be interested in me? What good is singing well? She's still not as pretty as my Shanshan.
After finishing the song, Li Hanxue sat back down beside Zhao Shanshan, while a few classmates gathered around Wu Zhaolong and showered him with praise.
"Brother Wu, I heard you've already bought a car and a house at such a young age! That's amazing."
"Of course! Brother Wu makes over ten thousand a month now!"
"By the way, Brother Wu, that Audi you bought must have been expensive, right?"
All their flattery began to make Wu Zhaolong feel as if he were walking on air. He said:
"It wasn't that expensive. I paid a little over three hundred thousand for it, all in one go."
Seeing Wu Zhaolong show off like that, the group praised him even more loudly.
A while later, the door opened again, and a waiter came in carrying drinks.
The waiter spotted An Mu sitting off to the side and paused for a moment before greeting him:
"Oh? Little An, having fun with your friends?"
An Mu smiled. "Just a casual get-together with my classmates."
"All right, enjoy yourselves. Give me a shout if you need more drinks."
"Will do!"
After setting down the drinks, the waiter left, closing the door behind him. At that moment, Wu Zhaolong walked over and said to An Mu:
"You're doing pretty well for yourself, An Mu. That was your coworker, wasn't it?"
At Wu Zhaolong's words, everyone turned their eyes to An Mu. With everyone staring at him, he had no choice but to grit his teeth and nod.
"Yeah!"
Hearing An Mu admit it, Wu Zhaolong sneered inwardly, though outwardly he said:
"Haha, An Mu, we were classmates, after all. How did you end up working here as a waiter?"
Hearing Wu Zhaolong mock him like that, An Mu could no longer stay seated. He immediately stood up and retorted:
"What's wrong with being a waiter? Is the money I earn as a waiter dirty or something?"
Everyone in the private room had stopped what they were doing and was silently watching the confrontation between Wu Zhaolong and An Mu. Even the classmates who were on good terms with An Mu said nothing. They couldn't really be blamed, though; Wu Zhaolong was powerful, and they couldn't afford to offend him.
Su Ye could also see that Wu Zhaolong was trying to humiliate An Mu, so he stood up and said:
"What the hell does it have to do with you whether An Mu is a waiter or not?"
Seeing Su Ye stand up for him, An Mu gave him a grateful look.
Su Ye had also begun to feel annoyed with Wu Zhaolong. He had barely interacted with him back in school, but now it seemed Wu Zhaolong really was disgusting.
Wu Zhaolong turned to look at Su Ye, his brow furrowing slightly. Just then, Zhang Qian, the woman who was close to Wu Zhaolong, came over and whispered a few words in his ear. His face immediately lit up, and he said to Su Ye:
"Well, look who it is. Su Ye, you've already been fired, haven't you? Don't tell me you came here to seek refuge with An Mu? What a pair of brothers in misery!"
Hearing Wu Zhaolong humiliate both him and Su Ye like that, An Mu clenched his fists.
Just then, the door opened again. A fat head poked in first, and upon seeing Su Ye, its owner entered and called out to him:
"So it really is you, Brother Su! I saw you from behind in the lobby on the first floor just now, but I thought I'd mistaken you for someone else. I also happened to have something to take care of then, so I've only just come to say hello. I'm terribly sorry!"
That was right. This was Li Anlan, a major director of Zunhuang Entertainment. Zunhuang Entertainment was involved in all kinds of entertainment ventures, and the Honored Emperor Bar was only one of them.
Seeing that it was Li Anlan, Su Ye said to him:
"Oh, it's Director Li!"
Li Anlan looked at An Mu and Wu Zhaolong, who were facing off, and asked Su Ye:
"Brother Su, what's going on? Have you run into some trouble?"
Su Ye explained, "I had a bit of an unpleasant encounter with someone."
Wu Zhaolong regarded Li Anlan coldly, assuming he was some actor Su Ye had hired to help him out. He sneered at Su Ye:
"Su Ye, you can stop putting on an act. What director? If this fat bastard is really a director, I'll swallow this bottle right here and now."
Wu Zhaolong's taunt made Li Anlan angry, but outwardly he smiled and said to him:
"Hehe, and who might you be, young man?"
Seeing Li Anlan smiling, Wu Zhaolong assumed he was backing down. He pointed his nostrils at the sky and said:
"It's not too late to back down now. Listen carefully: my name is Wu Zhaolong, and my father is the general manager of Zunhuang Media."
