Background and History

Holy Soul Village and Previous-Life Knowledge

Tang San is Tang Hao’s son from Holy Soul Village. He retains memories of a previous life associated with the Tang Sect, giving him cultivation methods, hidden-weapon skills, and judgment far beyond an ordinary child’s. Dong Jian recognizes him as the original protagonist of the world he remembers, already advantaged by Twin Martial Souls and a Titled Douluo father 1 2 12 164.

His awakening produces the unusual combination of Blue Silver Grass and Innate Full Soul Power. Although he reveals the grass publicly, he conceals his Clear Sky Hammer. Before he leaves home, Tang Hao warns him not to attach a Soul Ring to the hammer until he is sufficiently strong 2 15.

Journey to Nuoding Academy

Tang San meets Dong Jian at Iron Bamboo Village while traveling with Old Jack. He immediately notices Dong Jian’s unusually stable footwork and questions whether he has trained in martial arts. During the carriage journey, both boys reveal enough skill to recognize that the other is hiding an exceptional foundation 11 12.

When Zhou Qian ambushes the travelers, Tang San protects Old Jack, disables two attackers with iron slivers, and uses Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon to interfere with Zhou Qian’s footing. Afterward, he proposes a spar with Dong Jian to investigate his abilities more directly 13.

Yu Xiaogang’s Disciple

At Nuoding Academy, Yu Xiaogang deduces that Tang San possesses a second Martial Soul from the contradiction between ordinary-looking Blue Silver Grass and Innate Full Soul Power. His explanation of the bodily risks of Twin Martial Soul cultivation convinces Tang San to kneel, kowtow three times, and become his disciple 14 15.

Tang San quickly becomes protective of his teacher. He objects both to students mocking Yu Xiaogang and to Dong Jian and Li Man questioning his conclusions. This creates tension between Tang San’s trust in his master and their insistence on testing theories against evidence 14 16.

Nuoding Rivalries

Tang San wins his first formal spar with Dong Jian without either boy releasing a Martial Soul. Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, force control, and thrown pebbles prevent Dong Jian from establishing the close-range exchanges he needs 18.

After obtaining Blue Silver Entanglement, Tang San wins their next match by steering Dong Jian into waiting vines. Later encounters become less one-sided: Dong Jian learns to break the bindings, while Li Man develops ways to redirect teammates and obstruct Tang San’s landing points. Their first two-on-two match, with Tang San partnered with Xiao Wu, has no decisive winner 21 30 31 37.

Tang San also defeats Li Man individually. Despite her repeated escapes, he uses seeds left on the battlefield, sustained Soul Power, and paralysis to exhaust her options before stopping a hand at her shoulder 36.

Dragon Spine Valley Connection

Tang San offers to accompany Dong Jian and Li Man to Dragon Spine Valley, but their expedition does not require his participation. He interprets his exclusion as being shut out of a special opportunity and leaves dissatisfied 50.

The expedition later uncovers an unresolved connection involving Tang San and Gu Jiu. Gao Yan specifically warns the group not to discuss the valley around him, while a faint blue pattern resembling unawakened Blue Silver Grass appears on a sealed chain. Whether the connection concerns his grass, his second Martial Soul, or something else remains unanswered 55.

Shrek and the Suotuo Soul Fight

After joining Shrek, Tang San becomes the center of a seven-person combat system. His Blue Silver Grass coordinates attacks, retrieves teammates, and links the front and rear lines. When he encounters Dong Jian and Li Man again in Suotuo City, he identifies them as former classmates and rivals 70 71.

Against the Imperial Fighting Team, Tang San initially conceals the Eight Spider Lances. He then uses them to cross poison barriers, destroy formation eyes, and attack the opposing control positions. Dong Jian and Li Man counter by disrupting the lances’ support points and severing Shrek’s connections rather than trying to overpower Tang San directly 72 74 75.

The Imperial Fighting Team wins narrowly after an extended battle of attrition. Tang San acknowledges that they were better prepared, while maintaining that Shrek’s choice of path was not wrong 76.

Heaven Dou and the Tournament

Tang San arrives at Heaven Dou Royal Academy at level 35, with improved concealment, tougher grass, and smoother External Soul Bone control. His rivalry with Dong Jian remains analytical: each reads small changes in the other’s posture and movement to identify new capabilities 118.

During the tournament, Tang San increasingly delegates instead of making himself responsible for every exchange. He voluntarily leaves one individual match after two consecutive victories, and in another team battle he reduces his control network to a few essential points after an opponent repeatedly severs it 174 180.

In the later match against the Imperial Fighting Team, he targets their recovery routes and supporting connections rather than immediately confronting Dong Jian. He also combines Xiao Wu’s pressure with the threat of the Eight Spider Lances to interrupt Dong Jian’s momentum-based movement 196 198 200.

After the final match in Spirit City, Tang San continues reviewing his decisions. He and Dong Jian openly discuss their traps, movement habits, and limitations; Tang San even tries part of Dong Jian’s opening movement without claiming to have mastered it 207.

Appearance

  • At six years old: Neatly kept short black hair, plain cloth clothing washed pale, visibly mended shoes, and a small traveling bundle 11 12.
  • Movement: Long, steady breaths and unusually little vertical movement in his center of gravity distinguish him from ordinary village children 12.
  • At Suotuo: Wears a fitted blue outfit and a thin belt woven from Blue Silver Grass 71.
  • Eight Spider Lances: Manifest as eight jointed, purplish-black Spider Spears from his back; each extends more than three meters 71 74.

Personality

Tang San is observant, guarded, and competitive. He studies Dong Jian’s feet and posture from their first meeting, conceals the origins of his own force-control technique, and uses sparring to investigate unfamiliar abilities. He also objects when Li Man records his Martial Soul information without permission 12 13.

His loyalty to Yu Xiaogang initially makes him defensive toward criticism. He treats the discovery of his Twin Martial Souls as strong proof of his teacher’s authority and becomes angry when Dong Jian distinguishes respecting a teacher from accepting every judgment unquestioningly 14 16.

His competitive outlook becomes more measured over time. Before the Suotuo match, he limits his claim to proving that Shrek is stronger on that occasion—not that one victory validates every choice. Later, he leaves unobserved details blank in his research rather than inventing a complete explanation for Dong Jian’s training system 72 160.

Tang San can acknowledge an opponent’s strengths without dismissing a loss. He praises Dong Jian’s close-range power, recognizes Li Man’s performance despite their level gap, and admits that the Imperial Fighting Team’s preparation surpassed Shrek’s in Suotuo 18 36 76.

Abilities and Skills

Twin Martial Souls

Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer 2.

  • Develops Blue Silver Grass as a Control System Martial Soul 41.
  • Keeps the hammer concealed during his early public appearances 2.
  • Follows Tang Hao’s warning against prematurely attaching rings to the hammer 15.
  • Requires careful cultivation because the combined Soul Power of two Martial Souls can exceed the body’s limits 15.

Blue Silver Grass

His principal battlefield tool restrains enemies, creates traps, and coordinates allied movement 21 71.

Soul Ring / Skill Documented Properties
First — Blue Silver Entanglement A yellow, hundred-year Mandala Snake ring. Produces binding vines with paralytic venom; Tang San can strengthen them continuously with Soul Power 21 36 37.
Second — name unstated A yellow ring. Its activation accompanies the use of Blue Silver Grass to pull Zhu Zhuqing away from a counterattack 49 71.
Third — Spider Web Restraint A purple ring associated with a Man Faced Demon Spider. Produces a rapidly spreading web with plant-fiber and spider-silk characteristics 71 72.
  • Plants seeds and prepares entanglement zones before drawing opponents into them 36 37.
  • Changes vine intersections to frustrate attempts to break the bindings at their force-transfer nodes 37.
  • Uses grass to rescue falling allies, change their positions, or anchor himself to a wooden stake 37 71 73.
  • Limitations: Concentrated attacks can break the vines; disrupted connections weaken team coordination. Sustaining broad control and repeated webs becomes difficult as his Soul Power runs low 30 75 76.

Mysterious Heaven Skill

A previous-life cultivation method that produces concentrated, stable internal force 18.

  • Enhances his strength, reactions, endurance, and ability to withstand impacts even before he obtains a Soul Ring 18.
  • Continuously replenishes Soul Power, giving him an endurance advantage against Li Man 36.
  • Breaks through alongside his advancement after absorbing his First Soul Ring 21.

Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track

Deceptive footwork used to evade attacks, change angles, and deny close-range opponents a clean engagement 18.

  • Works alongside bindings and thrown projectiles to control an opponent’s approach 18 37.
  • Can be integrated with the support provided by the Eight Spider Lances 74.
  • Limitation: Its landing points still leave physical clues. Repeated observation, route restriction, and sound-based tracking allow Dong Jian to predict a particular landing point without completely deciphering the technique 37.

Mysterious Jade Hand

Hardens his hands and arms, making them feel like smooth stone on contact 18.

  • Used for palm attacks, weapon interception, and grabbing Li Man’s bamboo 18 30 36.
  • Allows him to block Dong Jian’s shoulder strikes, though sufficiently powerful impacts still drive him backward 30 37.

Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon

An invisible pulling technique used to manipulate objects, limbs, and an opponent’s balance 12 13 18.

  • Redirects a falling medicine bottle and interferes with Zhou Qian’s charging foot 12 13.
  • Pulls wrists or weapons off course to create openings 18 30 36.
  • Limitation: Dong Jian learns to move with its pull, using the borrowed force to close the distance 37.

Purple Demon Eye

A visual perception technique capable of catching extremely subtle movement 118.

  • Detects regular vibrations in the dust beneath Dong Jian’s feet after he releases his Martial Soul, prompting Tang San to question whether his Fourth Soul Skill affects the ground 118.

Hidden Weapons and Poison Knowledge

Tang San supplements control abilities with precise ranged attacks and knowledge of medicine and poison 13 41 71.

  • Uses iron slivers to strike an attacker’s wrist and another’s knee 13.
  • Uses pebbles during sparring to deny Dong Jian an easy approach 18.
  • Targets weakened formation cores with hidden weapons during the Suotuo battle 76.
  • Understands that the Eight Spider Lances’ venom is dangerous enough to require restraint in nonlethal competition 72.

Battlefield Coordination

Tang San builds tactics around his teammates’ distinct roles rather than relying on restraint alone 70 71 120.

  • Anticipates rescue needs before an ally is fully surrounded 73.
  • Uses route denial to separate an opposing vanguard from its support 196.
  • Adapts to severed connections by reducing his network and allowing teammates to perform flanking actions independently 180.
  • Studies recordings with Yu Xiaogang while retaining blank fields for unknown enemy countermeasures 160 196.

Equipment and Special Items

  • Eight Spider Lances — External Soul Bone: Eight fused Spider Spears capable of supporting his body, gripping surfaces, blocking attacks, and delivering thrusts. Their tips carry the Man Faced Demon Spider’s lethal venom, and they can absorb some poison 72 74 75 119.
    • Multiple support points let him cross ground-based control zones and remain elevated after flight assistance expires 74.
    • Repeated vibrations transmitted through their contact points can cause pain in his back and briefly stiffen the lances 75 76.
  • Hidden weapons: Concealed iron slivers and other small projectiles used for precision attacks and disrupting formations 13 76.
  • Match records: Keeps notes on opponents’ tactics and revises them after combat 160 207.

Relationships

  • Tang Hao — Father and blacksmithing instructor. Warns Tang San against adding Soul Rings to the Clear Sky Hammer before he is strong enough 2 13 15.
  • Yu Xiaogang / Grandmaster — Master and tactical adviser. Identifies his Twin Martial Souls, guides his ring development, and reviews opponents with him 14 15 20 196.
  • Dong Jian — Former Nuoding classmate and recurring rival. Their relationship develops from mutual suspicion and probing spars into detailed exchanges about tactics and training 12 13 18 207.
  • Li Man — Former classmate and control-system rival. Her insistence on evidence challenges his trust in Yu Xiaogang; her bamboo formations repeatedly test his bindings and movement 12 16 36 41.
  • Xiao Wu — Longtime schoolmate, teammate, and frequent combat partner. Tang San repeatedly uses Blue Silver Grass to rescue or reposition her 30 73 76 198.
  • Old Jack — Village elder who escorts him toward Nuoding Academy and proudly promotes his talent. Tang San protects him during the roadside ambush 11 12 13.
  • Dai Mubai, Zhu Zhuqing, Ma Hongjun, Ning Rongrong, and Oscar — Fellow Shrek Seven Devils whose attacks, mobility, amplification, and recovery Tang San coordinates 70 71 196.
  • Dugu Bo — Recognizes Tang San’s unusual mental fortitude, poison knowledge, and the poison-absorbing function of his External Soul Bone 119.
