Background and History
Origins and Former Prosperity
The manor’s history extends back roughly a thousand years to the early Ling Kingdom. Its first Spirit King, Ling Tian, reached Dao Palace Realm Perfection during an era when the kingdom stood alongside the Eastern Desolation’s five great powers. Most of the manor’s grand buildings date from this period, preserved by formations against decay 2 4 9.
The first Spirit King fought and killed numerous evil cultivators during the ancient upheaval but ultimately perished. The conflict exhausted the kingdom’s prosperity, and no new Dao Palace Realm cultivator had emerged there in the following thousand years 2 4 21.
The Spirit King’s Illness and Succession Dispute
Several years before Ling Yun’s confinement, the current Spirit King was poisoned by a strange insect while hunting demonic beasts. Physicians could not cure him, and a palace alchemist could only sustain his life. He spent most of the following years asleep, leaving Madam Wang in control of the household 1.
After an unknown attacker destroyed Ling Yun’s dantian, the manor’s elders stripped him of his heir status and assigned him to guard the Royal Mausoleum. With his father incapacitated and his own mother long dead, Ling Yun lost the support of those within the manor. He initially suspected Madam Wang of arranging the attack, but later discoveries connected the attacks on him and the manor to a wider conspiracy 1 19 41.
King Chen’s Conspiracy
King Chen used a proposed marriage between his daughter, Chen Ling, and Ling Yun to establish contact with the manor years before the main crisis. The Spirit King later identified this arrangement as part of a scheme extending back ten years, aimed at the Forbidden Heart in the Royal Mausoleum 8 41.
Chen Ling arrived with Dai Cheng, a disciple of the Moon-Gazing Sect, ostensibly to settle the marriage agreement. Madam Wang repudiated the agreement and exposed Chen Ling’s wish to leave with Dai Cheng. Under the influence of an evil art, Dai Cheng then activated a jade pendant that summoned a Primordial Spirit Realm Dharma body. Its attack destroyed the main hall and nearly overwhelmed the manor; Madam Wang, the defensive formations, and Ling Yun’s concealed intervention prevented its destruction 9 10 11.
The emperor temporarily stationed a Primordial Spirit Realm elder at the manor. Madam Wang also sacrificed its treasured Heavenly Soul Flower in an attempt to preserve Dai Cheng’s failing soul and avert retaliation from his master. An evil presence nevertheless destroyed Dai Cheng’s remaining soul and consumed the flower’s power 13 14 15.
Assault by Leng Yue and Xue Yue
Leng Yue and Xue Yue attacked to avenge Dai Cheng. Their combined techniques shattered the manor’s deteriorated grand formation, destroyed pavilions, and left enormous craters across the grounds. The poisoned Spirit King emerged to protect Madam Wang and Ling Fei, using the strength he had reserved for a final emergency 16 17.
The Mystic King, Light King, and Azure King joined him. Together, the four kings invoked their ancestral inheritance, Four Saints Slay Spirits, defeating the two attackers 18 22 23.
While the battle occupied the manor’s defenders, Ling Yun confronted infiltrators at the Royal Mausoleum. He killed his third uncle, Ling Guang, and crippled a guest elder who shared the conspirators’ allegiance; the elder was consumed by green flames before revealing his master. Ling Yun subsequently killed King Chen and learned that he was an evil cultivator’s Nether Envoy seeking the Forbidden Heart 19 20 21.
Recovery and Renewed Vigilance
After the battle, the Spirit King’s poison became uncontrollable. Believing Ling Yun dead, he entrusted Madam Wang with raising Ling Fei, preserving the lineage’s mission, and preparing Ling Fei to lead the manor after an audience with the emperor at eighteen. Ling Yun remained alive but chose to conceal his survival 23 24.
Disguised as a mysterious healer, Ling Yun stabilized his father and arranged the ingredients needed for a Cold Essence Pill antidote. Madam Wang mobilized the senior household members to gather the medicines and secured Ice Essence Grass from the Azure King in exchange for the Spirit King’s Supreme Yang Fire Essence if treatment succeeded 25 29 35.
Reconstruction began amid the damaged thousand-year-old buildings. The Spirit King later resumed authority while leaving daily administration to Madam Wang. At a meeting of the five royal lineages, he reported King Chen’s infiltration and his own treatment with eighth-grade Cold Essence Pills; the assembled leaders renewed their commitment to suppressing evil cultivators 27 40 41.
Organization and Leadership
| Position / Group | Function and Standing |
|---|---|
| Spirit King | Head of the manor and its only resident Primordial Spirit Realm expert before temporary imperial reinforcement. His cultivation is identified as Middle Primordial Spirit Realm during the confrontation with Leng Yue and Xue Yue 4 18. |
| Madam Wang | Governs during the Spirit King’s illness, commands defensive preparations, controls access to the treasury, and directs the search for antidote ingredients 1 14 16 29. |
| Ling Yun | Former heir, removed after his cultivation was crippled. Secretly protects the manor while cultivating in the Royal Mausoleum 1 11 21 25. |
| Ling Fei | Madam Wang’s son and the Spirit King’s designated future leader in his emergency instructions; his assumption of leadership is not shown 17 24. |
| Elders and Retainers | Include clan elders, guest retainers, uncles, and royal relatives. Before Ling Yun’s concealed rise, their cultivation reached at most Core Formation Realm Perfection beneath the Spirit King 4. |
| Imperial Elder | An Early Primordial Spirit Realm cultivator temporarily assigned by the emperor to protect the manor 13 16. |
- Internal loyalty: Despite household disputes, clanspeople rally behind Madam Wang during the Moon-Gazing Sect assault and pledge to live or die with the manor 16.
- Succession tensions: The Spirit King’s expectations and Madam Wang’s insistence that Ling Fei compete with Ling Yun damaged the brothers’ formerly close relationship. Both parents acknowledge their responsibility after Ling Yun’s presumed death 24.
Grounds and Defenses
The estate occupies a vast area in Myriad Phenomena City, with golden gates, glazed roofs, numerous towers and pavilions, and a street entrance connected to the capital’s four main thoroughfares 7 9.
| Site / Defense | Properties |
|---|---|
| Gateway Artifact | A fifth-tier magical artifact. Its flood-dragon presence repels Chen Ling’s Core Formation Realm coachman when the visitors challenge the guards 7. |
| Royal Mausoleum | Burial ground of the manor’s direct descendants in the Royal Tomb Mountain Range behind the estate. Layers of formations and restrictions keep it immaculate; the first Spirit King’s tomb stands at the summit 4 20. |
| Treasure Vault | A concealed, forbidden area containing numerous spiritual treasures. Only the Spirit King’s Token opens it 14. |
| Vault Restriction | A sixth-tier restriction personally inscribed by the first Spirit King. Originally capable of resisting a Dao Palace Realm cultivator, it remains beyond an ordinary Primordial Spirit Realm cultivator despite deterioration 14. |
| Grand Protective Formation | Activated through formation points around the manor. Xue Yue identifies the deteriorated defense as an incomplete sixth-tier formation; she and Leng Yue subsequently destroy it 10 16 17. |
Three Layers of Formations
Ling Yun’s later examination reveals three protective layers. The deepest remains beyond his ability to identify 44.
| Layer | Formation | Documented Capability |
|---|---|---|
| Outer | Thousand Shield True Li Formation | Sixth-tier defensive formation powered by earth veins 44. |
| Hidden | Seven Killings Forbidden Formation | Peak sixth-tier killing formation capable of threatening Dao Palace Realm experts 44. |
| Deepest | Unidentified formation | Its tier and origin are unknown to Ling Yun. Extending his spiritual sense toward it plunges his senses into darkness 44. |
Ancestral Mission and Inheritances
Forbidden Heart
- Custodianship: The Royal Mausoleum conceals the Forbidden Heart, an ancestral safeguard for the Five Branches of the Ling Clan and their final means of retaliation before destruction 24.
- Restricted knowledge: Its secret is known to successive Spirit Kings, the other three kings, and the emperor, rather than the household at large 22.
- Possible identity: Within a hidden world, Ling Yun encounters an enormous black flood-dragon corpse and concludes that the luminous Dragon Pearl in its mouth is the Forbidden Heart guarded by the manor 46.
- Ancient purpose: The dragon corpse reveals that five spirit beasts and descendants of Saint Evil Slayer created the Forbidden Heart and founded the Ling Kingdom to suppress the evil path’s return 48.
- Binding duty: The Spirit King instructs Madam Wang that the lineage must remain on its ancestral land and live or die with the Ling Clan, even until its last member falls 24.
Four Saints Slay Spirits
- Shared inheritance: The four royal manors and imperial family possess related ancestral inheritances whose united power can surpass the Dao Palace Realm 22.
- Demonstrated use: The four kings combine ancient runes to summon four holy figures over Myriad Phenomena City and unleash their united holy light against Leng Yue and Xue Yue 22 23.
Notable Treasures
- Spirit King’s Halberd — The current Spirit King’s high-grade fifth-tier weapon. Madam Wang uses it against the summoned Dharma body, but her Core Formation Realm cultivation draws out less than one-tenth of its power 10.
- Spirit King’s Token — Opens the protected treasure vault 14.
- Heavenly Soul Flower — Precious soul-nourishing medicine spent in an unsuccessful effort to save Dai Cheng. King Chen later credits its power with enabling him to reach Primordial Spirit Realm Perfection 14 15 20.
- Supreme Yang Fire Essence — A possession of the Spirit King pledged to the Azure King in exchange for the Ice Essence Grass needed for his antidote 35 40.
- Three-Inch Flying Immortal — Historically the first Spirit King’s weapon, recorded as destroyed during the ancient evil-cultivator upheaval. Ling Yun obtains it through his sign-in system rather than from the manor’s treasury 2.
External Relationships
- Ling Emperor and Imperial Family — The manor belongs to the direct royal bloodline. The emperor supplies temporary protection, and the Spirit King participates in the five lineages’ deliberations against evil cultivators 13 41.
- Mystic King, Light King, and Azure King — Fellow royal lineage leaders who reinforce the manor and combine their inheritances with the Spirit King’s during its defense 18 22.
- Azure King’s Manor — Provides the otherwise unavailable Ice Essence Grass through a negotiated exchange with Madam Wang 35.
- King Chen — Apparent marriage ally revealed as a Nether Envoy who spent years plotting against the manor to obtain the Forbidden Heart 8 21 41.
- Moon-Gazing Sect — Dai Cheng’s affiliation turns the engagement dispute into a major external threat. Its elders Leng Yue and Xue Yue attack the manor over his death 9 16 17.
- Heaven and Earth Academy — Previously sought Ling Yun as an inner-sect core disciple but ceased contacting the manor after his crippling, a silence Madam Wang found troubling 24.
