Background

The original Ling Yun was the Spirit King’s talented son and designated heir. He began cultivating at ten and reached Essence Condensation at sixteen. Heaven and Earth Academy invited him to become an inner-court core disciple, but a mysterious man in black attacked him on his journey there. His guards covered his retreat, and an imperial guard commander eventually saved him near Myriad Phenomena City; the attacker’s final strike nevertheless destroyed his dantian 1 8.

With the Spirit King largely unconscious from an incurable poison and Ling Yun’s mother already dead, authority in the manor rested with Madam Wang. The elders removed Ling Yun’s heirship and assigned him to guard the ancestral mausoleum. At this point, the transmigrated Ling Yun recovered his memories and recognized that he had entered a cultivation world 1.

His All-Heavens Sign-In System supplied a new path forward: the Myriad Dao Immortal Scripture, Great Emperor inheritances covering four Daos, and a Primordial Immortal Pill. After restoring his cultivation, he kept his recovery secret and used the mausoleum as a secluded training ground 1 2 3.

Appearance

After awakening his physique, Ling Yun is described as a graceful youth with sharp features, satin-like hair, jade-like skin, and an otherworldly bearing 2.

  • Eyes: His awakened gaze resembles lightning, with pupils likened to a starry abyss 2.
  • Clothing: Wears white during training and later changes into cloud-patterned robes 13 39.
  • Disguise: Uses black robes and an altered voice to conceal his identity during confrontations 19 20.
  • Life Talisman mark: A talisman seal manifests on his forehead, its vertical eye emitting crimson light 13 20.

Personality

Ling Yun is cautious and deliberately secretive. He conceals his restored cultivation, reserves powerful consumables for emergencies, and continues pretending to be dead rather than expose himself before he can withstand the forces threatening his clan. He treats even impressive breakthroughs as insufficient beside the stronger cultivators operating behind the scenes 3 19 27 44.

His caution does not prevent decisive violence. After killing Ling Guang, he confronts the difference between his former life and a world where survival may require killing. This experience marks his full acceptance of his new identity 19 20.

He remains affectionate toward A Tong and protective of the manor, although his attachment to the mausoleum also reflects his need for a safe cultivation refuge. He can revise his judgments: initially convinced that Madam Wang arranged his crippling, he reconsiders after seeing her defend him against outsiders 3 8 15.

Ling Yun retains a modern reader’s sense of humor, recognizing his broken engagement as a familiar fictional trope. Beneath that self-mockery lies a strong ambition to reach the pinnacle of cultivation, despite feeling unable to fully blend into his new world 8 39.

Abilities & Skills

All-Heavens Sign-In System

The system grants cultivation resources and techniques through sign-ins at the royal mausoleum 1 3.

  • Accumulated rewards: Seven daily sign-ins can be exchanged for a weekly sign-in; monthly and yearly sign-ins also provide rewards 12 39 42.
  • Concealment: Automatically hides the extraordinary phenomena produced by his physique awakening and first Life Talisman 2 13.
  • Upgrade: Declares his beginner period complete upon reaching the Primordial Spirit Realm and begins a free upgrade. Its new services have not yet been described 47.

Immortal Physique of Myriad Daos

His physique grants exceptional comprehension, rapid cultivation, and compatibility with different cultivation paths 2 40.

  • Allows dantian cultivation and Life Talisman cultivation to coexist without conflict 13.
  • Lets him comprehend sixth-tier abilities and Great Emperor inheritances far above his current realm 3 12.
  • Harmonizes his presence with heaven and earth, helping conceal his cultivation 8.
  • Does not remove practical realm restrictions: insufficient divine sense still limits the offensive talismans he can inscribe 12.

Life-bound Talisman and Soul Cultivation

The Life Talisman Heavenly Canon establishes a cultivation source independent of the dantian. Ling Yun forms a Life Talisman with a crimson vertical eye and strengthens it through bodily rune inscriptions 13 37.

  • Internal talismans: Runes inscribed within his body can reproduce talisman effects by consuming his own Talisman Yuan 37.
  • Spirit Refining Technique: Tempers his soul against the pressure of a primordial divine statue, strengthening his spiritual sense beyond others at his realm 13.
  • Spiritual perception: Progresses from thirty li to forty li and then sixty li before his Primordial Spirit breakthrough 13 40 42.
  • Eye of Deception: His first completed natal spell confounds the five senses and spiritual sense. Weaker minds can lose all perception; stronger opponents may still falter briefly 42.
  • Further development: A second natal spell is still being nurtured after his Primordial Spirit breakthrough 50.

Flying Sword Technique

A sixth-tier supreme-grade divine ability used with the Three-Inch Flying Immortal 3 50.

  • Qi control: Available before forming a Primordial Spirit, but nearly exhausts him at peak Essence Condensation. At Core Formation, he can maintain it for a quarter of an hour 3 4.
  • Spirit control: Requires a Primordial Spirit; the technique’s ultimate potential includes killing enemies a thousand li away, rather than a demonstrated early achievement 3 4.
  • Combat use: Kills King Chen and later eliminates Jiang Lian and four Core Formation Realm Perfection attackers 21 34.

Other Combat Techniques

Technique Grade Applications / Limits
Wind-Slaying Slash Not specified Creates cutting gales across a hundred zhang 3.
Ten Thousand Layers of Saber Aura Not specified Forms either an attacking sea of Saber Qi or a defensive shield 3.
Heaven-Reaching Heaven-Lamenting Hand Sixth-tier low-grade Conjures a heavenly hand with powerful suppressive force 12 13.
Cloud Immortal Soaring Steps Sixth-tier low-grade Enables elusive movement and spatial displacement; Ling Yun uses it to narrowly evade King Chen’s attack 13 20.
Dragon Transformation Technique Half-Saint inheritance Uses Spiritual Yuan to invoke a true dragon’s power and bearing in human form. Ling Yun masters half the technique in one day and manifests a black true dragon behind him 50.

Talisman Making

Ling Yun studies the Heavenly Repository Canon, the Heavenly Talisman Great Emperor’s inheritance. He quickly produces supreme-grade fourth-tier talismans and learns divine-sense inscription for fifth-tier work 6 13.

  • Heavenly Eye Spell: Provides remote visual observation over fifty li, but does not transmit sound and eventually expires 11 13.
  • Prepared talismans: Includes Heavenly Eye Spells, Divine Wood Spells, Wind Blade Talismans, and a Spirit-Sealing Sigil 12.
  • Commercial value: Sells one thousand third- and fourth-tier talismans for 810,000 low-grade spirit stones 28.
  • High-value inscription: A divine-sense-inscribed Divine Wood Spell Talisman is valued at 500,000 low-grade spirit stones during the auction 33.

Alchemy and Poison Treatment

Using the Ancient-Transcending Alchemy Classic, Ling Yun develops the skills needed to treat his father’s Sinister Insect poison 25 47.

  • Poison-Inducing Technique: Dissolves poisonous vapor and seals most of the poison within the Spirit King’s acupoints, stabilizing rather than curing him 25.
  • Spirit Dissolution Pills: Produces nine divine-quality fifth-tier low-grade pills during ten days of refining 37.
  • Cold Essence Pill: Refines a fifth-tier supreme-grade antidote. The first dose removes ninety percent of the poison; he leaves two further doses to complete the treatment 39.
  • Formation Emperor Canon: Enables him to deploy a low-grade fifth-tier formation and identify the manor’s sixth-tier defensive and killing formations. The deepest formation remains beyond his understanding 43 44.
  • Soul Search Technique: Extracts fragmented memories from King Chen’s remnant soul. A hostile presence attacks through the connection, forcing Ling Yun to sever his divine sense and defend himself with crimson light and the Spirit Refining Technique 21.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Three-Inch Flying Immortal — Five small flying swords forming a sixth-tier supreme-grade artifact, corresponding to Dao Palace Realm Perfection. Clan records describe the original artifact as belonging to the first Spirit King before its destruction during the ancient evil-cultivator upheaval 2 4.

  • Simu Suppression Furnace — Pill furnace purchased at auction for 150,000 low-grade spirit stones and subsequently used for refining 31 37.

  • Ling Yun’s mother — A deceased consort of the Spirit King; her absence leaves him without maternal support in the manor 1.
  • Madam Wang — His father’s current wife and the manor’s effective administrator during the Spirit King’s illness. Initially hostile to him, she nevertheless defends the manor’s dignity during his broken engagement and later supplies the medicines for his disguised treatment of the Spirit King 1 8 37.
  • Ling Fei — Younger brother and rival. Previously tries to undermine him, but takes responsibility before their father for sending Ling Yun to the mausoleum 1 8 23.
  • A Tong — Former beggar raised by the original Ling Yun as a younger brother and Dao attendant. Brings him a healing pill and promises to find a cure after becoming the Divine Desolation Sect master’s disciple 3.
  • Chen Ling — Former fiancée, betrothed through their fathers’ verbal agreement. Madam Wang formally repudiates her in Ling Yun’s name; her visit proves to conceal a larger scheme against the manor 8 9 11.
  • Ling Guang — Third uncle and traitor involved with the force behind Ling Yun’s attack. Ling Yun kills him at the mausoleum 19.
  • King Chen — Enemy and evil-cultivator nether envoy. Ling Yun kills him and discovers his mission to steal and destroy the Forbidden Heart 20 21.
  • Dragon Venerable — Half-Saint guardian spirit beast and progenitor of the lineage’s inherited art. Reveals Ling Yun’s saint ancestry and personally transmits the Dragon Transformation Technique 48 49 50.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Uncovering the Mausoleum Conspiracy

While secretly rebuilding his strength, Ling Yun discovers intruders investigating the first Spirit King’s tomb. He uses Heavenly Eye talismans to monitor the manor and realizes that Chen Ling’s engagement dispute is a cover for a larger attack 5 8 11.

Ling Guang and a guest elder later enter the mausoleum to finish him off, revealing their allegiance to the same hidden master. Ling Yun kills his uncle, but green flames destroy the elder before he can identify that master. King Chen subsequently arrives; after killing him, Ling Yun learns that evil cultivators seek the Forbidden Heart 19 20 21.

When his father finds King Chen’s corpse, Ling Yun’s blood, and no trace of Ling Yun himself, he assumes his son has died. Ling Yun deliberately preserves that misunderstanding 23.

Saving the Spirit King and Entering Seclusion

Ling Yun intervenes as an unidentified physician to suppress his father’s poison. He finances his alchemy training through talisman sales, acquires a furnace and spirit fire, and kills the five cultivators who attempt to rob him after the auction 25 28 31 33 34.

After administering the Cold Essence Pill, he returns to the mausoleum and conceals it with the Heart of Heavenly Illusion. A year of uninterrupted cultivation brings both of his cultivation systems to Core Formation Realm Perfection 39 42.

Discovering the Clan’s Origins

Investigating the manor’s deepest formation transports Ling Yun into an underground palace. Seven murals lead him to suspect that the Ling Clan’s origins and conflict with evil cultivators predate the Ling Kingdom. His blood opens a sealed door to a small world containing a flood dragon’s corpse and dragon pearl, which he identifies as the Forbidden Heart 44 45 46.

After his Primordial Spirit breakthrough, Dragon Venerable awakens and confirms the clan’s saint ancestry. Ling Yun learns that the Forbidden Hearts belong to a long-prepared plan, expected to reach its decisive stage within ten years. Moved by the sacrifices behind that plan, he promises not to retreat and receives the Dragon Transformation Technique 47 48 49 50.
