The Hundred-Thousand-Year-Old Rogue Rabbit
"If I'd known, I wouldn't have handed all my money over to Han Yu in one go."
Under Tang San's gaze, Yu Xiaogang slowly finished his lunch as though he were chewing wax.
After returning to the dormitory, Wang Sheng sidled up to Han Yu and spoke in a low voice.
"Boss, Tang San's teacher isn't very strong."
Han Yu glanced at him and nodded.
"I know."
"He's only a guest elder of sorts at our school. I heard he's almost fifty and still hasn't broken through to Soul Grandmaster."
"I know."
Han Yu lay on his bed and replied with an indifferent expression.
"But..."
Wang Sheng was a little anxious and wanted to tell Han Yu more.
"All right, I know everything. You can decide who'll take over my work from now on. Of course, you'll keep the pay too."
Han Yu yawned. He hadn't slept well at all the night before, and now he was getting sleepy.
Wang Sheng had no choice but to nod and leave, telling the other work-study students about the job.
The job was actually a sweet deal. All it took was sweeping the courtyard or doing some other work in the afternoon to earn five copper coins, which the work-study students naturally needed badly.
Before he knew it, Han Yu drifted into a dream. A roast suckling pig appeared, swaying back and forth before his eyes, its golden skin tempting his appetite.
In a situation like this, Han Yu didn't think twice. He reached out with both hands, grabbed the crab, and opened his mouth to bite down. Who would have thought the roast suckling pig would let out a clear cry in a little girl's voice?
"Ah!"
Han Yu opened his eyes and found that the roast suckling pig had turned into Xiao Wu. Outside, the sky was dim with approaching night, and the sun was slowly setting.
"What are you doing?"
Xiao Wu's little face was flushed. She pried apart the hands gripping her head, then rubbed her head against Han Yu's chest a few times, wiping off the drool.
The roast suckling pig was gone.
Han Yu was a little disappointed. The roast suckling pig had turned into a little rabbit, and he couldn't even eat her.
Feeling a little hungry, Han Yu looked around the dormitory. Everyone, including Tang San, was sitting cross-legged on their beds, meditating and cultivating.
"Let's go eat."
Han Yu stretched and called the bored Xiao Wu over to head to the cafeteria.
By the time they returned with full stomachs, Tang San and the others were only just stirring from their meditation.
When Tang San saw Han Yu, he walked up to him, unable to contain the excitement in his eyes.
"Brother, Teacher said that in a few days, once I reach level ten, he'll take me to get a Soul Ring. Are you coming?"
Han Yu waved a hand dismissively and said, "I'm not going. You go ahead. I know."
Xiao Wu, however, looked a little downcast. She asked in a delicate voice, "Why do you have to get a Soul Ring?"
Wang Sheng stared at her as though she were an idiot. After a long while, he finally explained.
"You need a Soul Ring to become a Soul Master, and only Soul Masters can collect Gold Soul Coins from the Spirit Hall. Besides, if a Soul Master doesn't get a Soul Ring, what else would they get?"
After hearing Wang Sheng's words, all that remained in Xiao Wu's already small brain was "collect Gold Soul Coins from the Spirit Hall." But then she thought about her hatred for the Spirit Hall and felt torn.
Two little figures appeared in her mind. One told her not to go; she could do without the Spirit Hall's Gold Soul Coins.
The other told her to go. The Spirit Hall's things were free for the taking, so why not take them?
"What are you thinking about?"
Xiao Wu had already written her thoughts all over her face, and naturally Han Yu could see them. He smacked her on the head. Xiao Wu immediately clutched her head with both hands, looking pitiful.
"Do you have any money right now?"
Ignoring her cutesy act, Han Yu asked the question aloud.
Xiao Wu shook her head.
"Then what are you pondering? They're free Gold Soul Coins."
Han Yu rolled his eyes and headed for his bed. He still needed to catch up on sleep.
Left where she stood, Xiao Wu lowered her head in thought. After a long while, she asked Wang Sheng a question.
"What cultivation level is the strongest person in the Spirit Hall?"
Wang Sheng thought for a moment before replying.
"It seems to be Soul Grandmaster Ma Xiunuo. He should be a Soul Grandmaster, I think. Our Nuoding City is just a small, remote city. The strongest person here is our academy dean, a Soul Ancestor above level forty."
At the mention of the dean, Wang Sheng's eyes filled with admiration. He was a Soul Ancestor, after all, and Wang Sheng dreamed of becoming one.
Having received a definite answer, Xiao Wu breathed a sigh of relief. She turned and left Dorm Seven, then left Nuoding Academy and headed to the Spirit Hall to collect those Gold Soul Coins.
Tang San, Wang Sheng, and the others had long since been famished. Before long, they headed to the cafeteria one after another. Tang San had no money, but at noon Yu Xiaogang had said he would wait for him on the first floor and cover his meals from then on. That was why Tang San hadn't asked Han Yu for money.
Unlike that afternoon, Han Yu couldn't fall asleep no matter what he did. With no other choice, he opened his eyes and stared blankly at the ceiling.
Ever since he had absorbed that Soul Ring, his level had risen by a large margin. What was more, the little tree and the Blue Silver Emperor in his spiritual space were constantly cultivating and feeding Soul Power back to him. So although he had no cultivation method, his Soul Power kept increasing.
Just as Han Yu was thinking about his plans for the future, the door to Dorm Seven was kicked open from outside.
"Who is it?!"
Han Yu shouted, sitting up and looking irritably toward the door.
By the light of the moon and the lamps in the corridor, a small, slender figure stood in the doorway, backlit and impossible to make out. But Han Yu already knew it was Xiao Wu.
Xiao Wu entered the dormitory with a spring in her step, laden with packages large and small. She switched on the light, put the packages on the bed on the other side, and eagerly fiddled with the things she had bought.
"You bought all this?"
Han Yu walked over to Xiao Wu and pointed at the jumble of things on the bed.
"Yep."
Xiao Wu beamed as she kept fiddling with some mindless toys, as well as clothes and snacks.
"Then where's your bedding?"
Han Yu glanced at her and asked casually.
Xiao Wu stiffened for a moment, then went back to fiddling with the things in her hands.
"I didn't have enough money, so I didn't buy any. Besides..."
Xiao Wu put what she was holding on the bed and looked at Han Yu with a smile.
"You're a boy. What are you afraid of?"
Well, well, you little rabbit who's lived for over a hundred thousand years.
Han Yu gave her a puzzled look, then returned to his bed and lay down, staring blankly at the ceiling.
"This is for you."
As he was lost in thought, a fair, tender arm appeared before his eyes, its skin so soft it looked as though water could be squeezed from it. A little hand held a pinwheel.
Han Yu took it and blew on it, and the pinwheel spun.
"There's something for me too?"
Han Yu looked surprised as he watched Xiao Wu, who was still fussing with her things beside him.
"The main thing is, the main thing is..."
Xiao Wu turned around, shyly tapping two of her slender, tender fingers together.
"The main thing is, I don't have any money left for food."
It was a whole carrot feast, after all. Of course Xiao Wu wanted to eat it, but only Soul Masters could collect one Gold Soul Coin, and it was nowhere near enough for her to spend. There were even lots of things she hadn't bought on the way back.
