Background / History

Previous Life and Childhood

Tang San is a transmigrator who was an orphan in his previous life and retains techniques associated with the Tang Sect. Having lacked a family before, he becomes deeply attached to Tang Hao and Han Yu 2.

While Tang Hao was fleeing pursuers with the infant Tang San, a lightning strike caused him to drop the child. He then found two babies where there had been one and took both because he could not distinguish his son from the newcomer. He named the elder Tang Hanyu, later known as Han Yu, and the younger Tang San 1.

The brothers grew up around Tang Hao’s blacksmith shop in Holy Soul Village. Old Jack helped care for them when they were too young to look after themselves. Tang San later cooked for the household, obeyed Tang Hao, and secretly meditated 1 28.

Han Yu repeatedly sold Tang San as a child groom and subjected him to pranks. Tang San nevertheless interpreted his brother’s behavior as well-intentioned. After briefly wanting to kill Han Yu over a filthy-rag prank, he felt guilty and decided to give him the first Sleeve Arrow he made 1 2.

Martial Soul Awakening and Mistaken Identity

Tang San awakened twin Martial Souls, but lost the Clear Sky Hammer to Han Yu’s little tree while unconscious. On waking, he sensed that something was missing without knowing what had happened 3.

His Blue Silver Grass initially convinced Tang Hao that Tang San was his biological son. Once Han Yu displayed the stolen Clear Sky Hammer, however, Tang Hao reversed that judgment and began treating Han Yu as his true child 4 6.

Seeking the affection Han Yu had received after striking Tang Hao with a small hammer, Tang San tried hitting his father with a smithing hammer. Tang Hao responded with a severe beating; the Mysterious Heaven Skill’s protection kept Tang San from being killed 6.

Han Yu subsequently absorbed Ah Yin’s Soul Bone and took away her surviving Blue Silver Emperor plant, then blamed Tang San for trampling the grass to death. Tang Hao believed him and attacked Tang San again, fracturing his wrist despite his use of Mysterious Jade Hand. Old Jack’s intervention saved him 7 8.

Tang San’s rapid recovery and unusual childhood habits then led Tang Hao to conclude that he was a disguised hundred-thousand-year Blue Silver Grass Soul Beast. Tang Hao began planning to turn him into a Soul Ring and Soul Bone for Han Yu 8 9.

Still unaware of this plan, Tang San continued to seek his father’s approval. When Tang Hao expelled him from the smithy for making noise at night, he accepted the explanation that he was protecting his family’s sleep and endured a storm outside. The following morning, Tang Hao blocked Han Yu’s hammer when Han Yu mistook the bundled-up Tang San for a frightening creature 10.

Nuoding Academy

Old Jack secured a work-study opportunity for Tang San, who traveled to Nuoding Academy with Han Yu. Han Yu’s overlapping presentation of their certificates caused the gatekeeper to associate Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass with Han Yu’s Innate Full Soul Power, attracting Yu Xiaogang’s attention 4 13.

Tang San was impressed by Yu Xiaogang’s explanations and nearly knelt to him immediately. Han Yu interrupted, privately negotiated payment from Yu Xiaogang, and then sent Tang San inside to become his disciple 15.

Under Yu Xiaogang, Tang San reached level ten and obtained his first Soul Ring in the Soul Hunting Forest. After returning, he visited Spirit Hall for assessment and found employment at a smithy, scheduling work after his academy cleaning duties 19 21.

Xiao Wu and Tang Hao’s Letters

Tang San developed feelings for Xiao Wu while she grew close to Han Yu. During their journey back to Holy Soul Village, he concealed his jealousy, questioned his own character, and resolved not to replace his brother in her affections 23.

At the smithy, the brothers found separate letters from Tang Hao. Tang San’s letter presented Tang Hao as a loving father, instructed him to care for Han Yu, and promised a future awakening for his Blue Silver Grass. Han Yu’s letter instead disclosed Tang Hao’s belief that Tang San was a hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast 24.

Tang San took his letter as a warning against hurting his brother and renewed his resolve to put Han Yu first. Tang Hao intended the reassurance to keep him cooperative until he could be used for Han Yu’s advancement 24 25.

Growing Resentment

After trying to win Xiao Wu’s attention during Han Yu’s absence, Tang San privately admitted that he envied his brother. Unable to reconcile those feelings with his image of himself as morally spotless, he blamed the influence of his parents in this life 39.

He also became disillusioned with Yu Xiaogang. Mistaking an object for a cultivation aid, he initially questioned his injured teacher about its effectiveness rather than helping him. A subsequent humiliating incident left him covered in filth and witnessed by other students. Although angry enough to consider attacking Yu Xiaogang, he restrained himself because a teacher held the same standing as a father 41.

Appearance

  • Build: Thin and small during his early academy years 13.
  • Eyes: Turn purple when he activates Purple Demon Eye 39.
  • Early clothing: Wears new clothes for the first time in years with Han Yu’s help before entering Nuoding Academy 13.
  • Recurring injuries: Tang Hao’s beatings repeatedly leave his face heavily swollen; the narration compares it to a “pig’s head” 6 9.

Personality

Tang San is obedient, hardworking, and intensely eager for familial affection. He cooks while injured, feels guilty when unable to serve Tang Hao, and avoids asking for help even when hungry. Small gestures of apparent care can convince him that his father and brother love him despite their treatment of him 8 9 10.

His loyalty makes him especially vulnerable to manipulation. He interprets Han Yu’s suppressed laughter as concern, accepts being left outside in a storm as a family responsibility, and vows to protect Han Yu with his life because his brother treats him as a child rather than an adult 8 10 21.

That devotion coexists with jealousy and violent impulses. He briefly considers killing Han Yu after a prank and resents the affection and possessions his brother receives, but repeatedly suppresses these thoughts through guilt 2 5.

Tang San strongly identifies with being the dignified, “pure and spotless” Third Young Master of the Tang Sect. When his attraction to Xiao Wu conflicts with that self-image, he alternates between self-reproach and explanations that shift responsibility away from himself 23 39.
