Chapter 39
Shen Yi scooted aside. Fu Yuhe got into the car, sat where Shen Yi had been sitting, and shut the door, telling the driver to go.
"Where are we going?" Shen Yi asked.
Fu Yuhe said, "Home."
Shen Yi asked, "Your home?"
Fu Yuhe glanced at him. Clearly, it had been a pointless question.
Shen Yi turned the Rubik's Cube in his hand with one hand. "What is it that was important enough for you to come find me yourself?"
Fu Yuhe watched his pretty fingers deftly turn the cube, the corners of his lips curving slightly. "Of course... it's something very important."
He seized the initiative and asked casually, "She was the one who wrote the love letter?"
"She?" Shen Yi's fingers paused before he realized whom Fu Yuhe meant. "Hmm... do you care that much?"
"No," Fu Yuhe said. "It's not important."
There was a smile in Shen Yi's voice as he asked gently, "Then why ask?"
"Just making conversation," Fu Yuhe said indifferently.
Shen Yi said, "I see..."
In the end, he never answered the question.
Special Assistant Wang sat silently in the front passenger seat, making himself invisible.
He had thought President Fu had come to pick up his younger brother, but their conversation left him thoroughly confused.
He had been with Fu Yuhe for quite some time, and the better he got to know him, the more he understood certain things about him. If Fu Yuhe thought something was unimportant, he would never ask about it in the first place.
The silence in the car made for a stifling atmosphere. Shen Yi solved the cube and tossed it into his schoolbag, then rested his cheek on his hand and gazed out the window. Fu Yuhe lowered his eyes, pressing his fingertips together absentmindedly.
At a traffic light, the phone in Shen Yi's pocket rang. It was Fu Cheng, and he answered.
"Shen Yi, why did you leave?" Fu Cheng asked.
The car was so quiet and the call volume was high enough that Fu Yuhe could faintly make out Fu Cheng's voice. He glanced at Shen Yi.
"Something came up." Shen Yi smiled at Fu Yuhe.
Fu Cheng asked, "What is it? How come I didn't hear you mention it before?"
Shen Yi mouthed "Should I tell him?" to Fu Yuhe. His expression was unhurried, and his lips were still curved upward. His intention could not have been clearer.
Fu Yuhe reached out to cover the phone and said softly, "Keep it from him. You can name your terms."
Shen Yi made an "OK" gesture, and only then did Fu Yuhe let go of his phone.
"Shen Yi? Shen Yi?" Having received no answer for a while, Fu Cheng called his name several times.
"I'm here," Shen Yi said. "It's personal. Let's talk later."
The call ended, and the car had long since left the traffic light behind.
Their final destination was the Fu family villa. The car slowly pulled into the garage, and Shen Yi followed Fu Yuhe out. With his backpack slung over his right shoulder, he looked down and stepped in Fu Yuhe's footsteps, his gait easy.
Fu Yuhe listened to the footsteps behind him, his expression betraying nothing. Shen Yi had an innate purity about him. Even if his personality was somewhat nasty, his little schemes could not be called "bad" in the true sense.
Fu Yuhe thought that, compared to himself, Shen Yi was probably still too young. He really was not worried at all about what Fu Yuhe might do to him, thinking that what he had on Fu Yuhe was enough to threaten him.
They changed their shoes at the door.
"Brother Fu," Shen Yi said, "what did you want to see me about? Can you tell me now?"
"There's no hurry," Fu Yuhe said.
He went upstairs, and Shen Yi raised an eyebrow, left with no choice but to keep following him.
By rights, Fu Yuhe should not have sought him out privately for Fu Cheng's sake now, which left only matters between the two of them.
Still, he had kept his word and had not breathed a single word to Fu Cheng.
Fu Yuhe did not go to the study, but to the master bedroom. He opened the door and went in, taking off his trench coat with his back to Shen Yi. Shen Yi stood in the doorway, looking around. When Fu Yuhe hung up his coat, he saw Shen Yi looking as curious as a cat.
"Put your schoolbag anywhere," Fu Yuhe said.
The room was very tidy, much the same as when Shen Yi had last visited. He looked away and asked, "Why did we come to your room?"
Fu Yuhe repeated his question. "Why?"
He walked up to Shen Yi, who did not back away. Fu Yuhe reached past his waist.
Click-the soft sound of the door closing made the atmosphere tense. Even after shutting the door, Fu Yuhe did not move his hand away, leaving it on the handle behind Shen Yi's waist. His forearm pushed Shen Yi's loose jacket a little to the side.
"What do you think?" Fu Yuhe whispered by his ear. "Hmm?"
He raised his other hand to the back of Shen Yi's neck and gently stroked it, like a big bad wolf shedding its sheep's disguise and toying with interest with the little white rabbit that had fallen into its trap.
A fire had been burning in his chest for several days now. The scene at the milk tea shop by the school gate had added fuel to it, and it was burning even more fiercely now.
"Have you had fun these past few days?" Fu Yuhe's voice was low, like a beast waking from sleep, at ease and nonchalant. Recalling Shen Yi's threat during the phone call in the car, he gave a quiet, derisive laugh. "What makes you so sure I'll always let you threaten me?"
He tilted his head and lightly kissed that fair earlobe. "Hmm?"
Shen Yi's breathing grew heavier, and he turned his head slightly, only for Fu Yuhe to clamp a hand firmly around the back of his neck.
"Brother Fu-"
"Call me Brother," Fu Yuhe interrupted.
Shen Yi said, "...Why?"
Fu Yuhe said, "You have a lot of questions."
But he did not want to answer any of them now. "Just be good and do as I say. Otherwise..."
