Background / History

Lan Qingyan was born into the Lan Family, whose patriarch—her father—was a Soul Douluo. A beast tide on the Extreme North Ice Plain destroyed the clan and its city; Lan Qingyan survived only because she was then living with the Shui Family. 15

She became Earl Shui's principal wife and gave birth to Shui Bing'er. After Earl Shui took Bai Yujie as his second wife, Lan Qingyan was neglected. When he died, she inherited control of the Earl's Manor as its First Madam. 10 11 18

Following the Earl's death, opponents began seizing the manor's assets. The Soul Saint Wuta demanded both the estate and Lan Qingyan herself, forcing her to seek assistance outside Shui Li City. 11 13

In Suotuo City, Lan Qingyan pays for Gu Shenggo's meal and invites him to dine with her, initially believing that her Soul Emperor status is impressive. His revelation as a Level 90 Soul Douluo frightens her, but she quickly seeks to travel with him and establish a connection. 9 10

Lan Qingyan deliberately becomes intoxicated to create an opportunity to gain Gu Shenggo's favor. The following morning, she asks him to resolve the threats facing the Earl's Manor; in exchange, she agrees to arrange a teaching position for him at Skywater Academy. 10 11

Shui Family Crisis

Lan Qingyan brings Gu Shenggo back to Shui Li City, where Wuta attempts to intercept and capture her. Gu Shenggo overwhelms Wuta, then forces the Shui Family elders and Bai Yujie to recognize his authority after they mock Lan Qingyan's claim that he killed the Soul Saint. 12 15 16

With Gu Shenggo backing her, Lan Qingyan regains control over the manor's internal situation and enjoys seeing the elders submit after they had urged her to surrender to Wuta. 15 16

Skywater Academy

Lan Qingyan provides Gu Shenggo with a detailed map of the Extreme North Ice Plain before his departure and ensures Shui Bing'er and Shui Yue'er continue practicing the Sword Heart Art he taught them. 27

Seven years later, she serves as Skywater Academy's Director. Upon Gu Shenggo's return as a Titled Douluo, she guides him through the academy, outlines its staff and student structure, and states that he may hold its highest teaching rank—or even become dean—if he wishes. 68
