Background / History

Harry first meets Silas Cyril and Hermione Granger at Hagrid's hut. Though Silas initially claims no interest in meeting “The Boy Who Lived,” he greets Harry politely and later becomes a reliable, if unconventional, ally. 23

During his first year, Harry’s broom is magically sabotaged during a Quidditch match. Silas identifies Professor Quirrell as the culprit and forcibly exposes him, bringing Harry’s danger to an abrupt end. 32

Harry later suspects Snape and Quirrell of conspiring against him. Although his conclusion is partly mistaken, his concern leads him and Ron to investigate the protections surrounding the Philosopher’s Stone. 37 47 In the final confrontation, Harry is attacked by Voldemort through Quirrell; his instinctive strike triggers the ancient protection surrounding him and forces Voldemort’s remnant to flee. 48

Over the following summer, Harry is confined at the Dursley home and unable to answer Silas’s letters because Dobby intercepts them. Silas visits the house, confronts the situation, and learns the truth from Harry. 49 50

In second year, Harry and Ron are unable to enter Platform Nine and Three-Quarters and fly Ron’s family car toward Hogwarts.
