First Appearance Chapter 51

Background / History

Bruce Wayne's parents were murdered by Joe Chill. Years later, Bruce nearly killed Chill when the murderer was paroled, but left Gotham instead and spent six years travelling, studying, and training himself. 51 55

During his travels, Bruce trained with the League of Shadows. When the organization ordered him to prove his commitment by killing a criminal and then lead its destruction of Gotham, he instigated a revolt and destroyed its base with gunpowder. 56 64

Bruce returned to Gotham as Batman, adopting a public playboy image while secretly targeting the city's gangs and corruption. Early in his career, he acknowledged that his training had not prepared him for the distinct demands of investigation, infiltration, sabotage, and protection. 53 56

Appearance

Batman wears a black, bat-themed vigilante suit with a cowl, cape, and utility belt. His voice is consistently described as deep and hoarse. 147

  • Uses a cape made from memory fabric that can be electrified into gliding wings. 60
  • Maintains Bruce Wayne's public image as a wealthy, carefree playboy to conceal his activities. 56 57
  • Used a middle-aged, stubbled latex disguise while infiltrating the Red Hood Gang as “Red Hood Five.” 51

Personality

Batman is intensely determined to change Gotham despite recognizing how deeply entrenched its corruption is. He believes the city will not remain rotten forever and commits himself to protecting its citizens, even when outmatched. 52

He is highly paranoid and methodical, quietly preparing contingencies for allies, threats, and even himself should he lose control. His self-imposed contingency involving his parents' graves demonstrates that he judges himself more harshly than anyone else. 57

Batman opposes indiscriminate killing and challenged David over the lethal force used against the Red Hood Gang. However, his methods against criminals can be intimidating, including suspending suspects from skyscrapers to exploit their fear. 52 147
