Background / History

Bái Xī Wén is an elder of the Golden Cauldron Sect and the junior disciple of its leader, Qū Dōng Liú. He is widely regarded as the sect's strongest fighter and a renowned Hebei expert. Three years before Duàn Yì arrived at the sect, Bái Xī Wén encountered Yuè Jiāo Nú and fell in love with her at first sight. Although he disagreed with some of Qū Dōng Liú's actions toward the Moon Worship Palace, he would not act against the Golden Cauldron Sect; he did, however, secretly help Yuè Jiāo Nú escape the palace incident. 6 15

Duàn Yì approached Bái Xī Wén under the guise of visiting a relative, carrying Yuè Jiāo Nú's scarf as proof of their connection. Bái Xī Wén initially suspected that Duàn Yì sought revenge against Qū Dōng Liú, but accepted him into his residence after becoming convinced that the youth genuinely sought strength rather than immediate vengeance. 13 14

He refused to formally accept Duàn Yì as either a disciple or a Golden Cauldron Sect member. Instead, he made Duàn Yì his sworn brother, allowing him to live on the mountain and offering martial instruction on the conditions that Duàn Yì help locate Yuè Jiāo Nú and speak favorably of him to her. 16 He subsequently taught Duàn Yì the foundations of internal cultivation, Ice True Qi, Ice Divine Palm, and Songshan Swordplay. 17 18

After defeating the Wudang disciple Daoist Cang Song, Bái Xī Wén learned that his close senior brother Liú Pán had been assassinated. He immediately left the Golden Cauldron Sect to investigate and avenge the murder. 55 63 During this pursuit, reports spread that he had brutally crippled seven senior Golden Cauldron Sect experts, making him a target for the Lin Family and other Jianghu figures. 132

Duàn Yì later found Bái Xī Wén in Yuancheng County, where he appeared gaunt, bloodstained, white-haired at the temples, and consumed by grief and killing intent. Duàn Yì chose to support him rather than side with the Lin Family, accompanying him into the Lin residence to seek answers from Lín Jīnglóng. 139 141 Their later discussions led Bái Xī Wén to recognize the political dangers surrounding Qū Dōng Liú and the Golden Cauldron Sect. 145 149

By a later point in the story, Bái Xī Wén had become the ruler of Wei Prefecture and assumed leadership of the Golden Cauldron Sect. Five years afterward, he and Yuè Jiāo Nú were married and had a son. 320 742

Appearance

Bái Xī Wén is tall and slender, with a naturally refined and heroic bearing. During his pursuit of Liú Pán's killer, his appearance deteriorates sharply: his white clothing becomes stained gray and red, his face grows gaunt, and pale hair appears at his temples. 139

Personality

Bái Xī Wén is ordinarily slovenly, approachable, and free of airs. He can be patient and attentive as a teacher, particularly when instructing Duàn Yì in difficult fundamentals such as meridians, acupoints, and qi circulation. 15 18

His two greatest sensitivities are the Golden Cauldron Sect and Yuè Jiāo Nú. He is jealous and possessive where Yuè Jiāo Nú is concerned, yet his loyalty to the sect ultimately outweighs his romantic feelings; he refuses to damage the sect's interests even for her sake. 14 15

He also possesses a clear moral boundary. When advising Duàn Yì to gain real combat experience and Killing Aura, he suggests becoming an executioner rather than murdering innocents. 40 Liú Pán's assassination, however, drives him into a visibly unstable and ruthless state. 63 139
