Background / History
Duàn Yì was raised in Yuxi Village as the son of the scholar Duàn Yuè and Yán Fāngfēi. He later learned that his mother had once been the Moon Worship Palace's Young Palace Mistress and its presumed successor. She crippled her own martial arts after defying her mother, Yán Sūsū, to remain with Duàn Yuè and their family. 2
After Yán Sūsū was overthrown by Yuè Bì Nǔ and Qū Dōngliú, her loyal retainer Yuè Jiāo Nú sought out Duàn Yì. She revealed his maternal lineage and the Longevity Lock's connection to the missing Blood Head Monk and the Divine Light Skill. Duàn Yì initially prioritized gaining strength over immediately pursuing revenge. 2
Joining the two halves of the Longevity Lock awakened the Tower of Hidden Martial Arts, a secret space that became the basis of his rapid rise. He subsequently sought instruction from Bái Xīwén at the Golden Cauldron Sect, gaining his first systematic training in internal energy and swordsmanship. 3 16 18
Years later, Xià Hóng revealed that Duàn Yì was the son of the exiled Zhenbei King and Duàn Yuè's hidden background was tied to the royal line. Duàn Yì accepted recognition as the Zhenbei King's Mansion's Heir Apparent and adopted the name Xià Yì, though the royal line was later uprooted and his status revoked. 584 589 742
Appearance
Duàn Yì is a refined, fair-skinned youth with a slender build and an exceptionally handsome face. His appearance and bearing frequently cause others to underestimate the severity of his martial prowess. 6 101 387
- Sword-like eyebrows, bright eyes, a high nose bridge, and smooth fair skin. 387
- Long, straight finger bones and slender yet strong hands suited to weapons. 16
- Carries himself with composed elegance; after attaining a higher spiritual realm, he is described as resembling an unrestrained Wei-Jin scholar. 483
- His facial structure closely resembles both Duàn Yuè and his uncle, Xià Hóng. 582
Personality
Duàn Yì is intensely ambitious and treats martial arts as the central purpose of his life. He openly desires wealth, power, women, and the opportunity to witness every kind of martial art, viewing strength as the means to obtain everything else. 40 593
He is observant and calculating rather than blindly vengeful. After learning of Yuè Bì Nǔ and Qū Dōngliú's betrayal of the Moon Worship Palace, he concealed his hatred until he possessed enough strength to act safely. 49
His hunger for improvement is balanced by a willingness to reflect. Defeat and stronger opponents become lessons rather than reasons to retreat, and he eventually develops a clearer distinction between repaying kindness and eliminating enemies. 465 719
Abilities & Skills
Tower of Hidden Martial Arts
The Tower is Duàn Yì's defining advantage: a mental realm entered through the Longevity Lock.
- His physical body falls into deep sleep while his consciousness trains inside the Tower. 3
- Mental exertion within the Tower does not physically tire his real body, allowing him to use sleep for cultivation. 3
- It preserves martial knowledge, including complete manuals such as Songshan Swordplay, Bone-Melting Cotton Palm, Dragon Elephant Prajna Skill, and the Hundred Buddhas Painting. 19 60 326
- Its phantom training environment lets him test dangerous ideas without harming his real body. 594
Internal Energy and Body Refinement
Duàn Yì's internal foundation combines several normally incompatible paths.
- Ice Profound Energy became his primary ice-element internal art, drawing Water Qi to cleanse impurities, strengthen his physique, and empower cold-based attacks. 206 218
- Mysterious Skill Manual transformed his internal energy into Primordial Vital Energy, enabling him to cultivate different internal arts without True Qi conflict. 502
- Hundred Buddhas Painting nourishes True Qi through one hundred acupoints, cleanses the body, refines Vital Energy, and strengthens his origin. 327
- Dragon Elephant Prajna Skill grants overwhelming physical strength and durability; at high output, he manifests the force of ten dragons and ten elephants. 658
- Despite this breadth, he recognizes that body refinement remains his least complete path and seeks another divine body-refining art to perfect it. 689
Swordsmanship
Swordsmanship is Duàn Yì's foremost combat specialty.
- Songshan Swordplay — His foundational sword art, including Myriad Peaks Paying Homage and the Songyang Iron Sword technique. 19 59 111
- Unity of Man and Sword — Lets his spirit and weapon act as one, sharpening his control and responsiveness under pressure. 232
- Sword Qi and Sword Aura — Can manifest Sword Qi without a sword and project Sword Aura through a blade. 539
- Fourteen Deadly Swords — His study of the Fourteenth Sword's intent became a major means of tempering his will; he later employed the stronger fifteenth sword against the Crimson-Faced Heavenly King. 563 658
- Sacred Spirit Swordplay — He mastered eighteen swords, then integrated multiple sword daos to evolve the art to twenty-two stances. 688 715
- Severing Pulse Sword Qi — A precise sword strike used to break the structure of opposing martial arts by targeting weaknesses in their Vital Energy. 606 653
Other Martial Arts
Duàn Yì supplements swordsmanship with a wide arsenal rather than relying on a single discipline.
- King Yue's Divine Arrow — Lightness skill that moves “like an arrow” and improves both pursuit and escape. 30 31
- Great Vajra Fist Style — A Buddhist fist art whose power and precision improved after he studied the Diamond Sutra. 166 331
- Great Dipper Seven Forms — A Quanzhen defensive supreme skill that addresses his former lack of defensive options. 316 339
- One Yang Finger — A high-ceiling finger technique with healing and Marrow Cleansing properties, but severe True Qi consumption and recovery risks. 512
- Heavenly Cripple Divine Skill — A nine-stance leg art whose later forms exceed ordinary martial arts in destructive scale. 743
Perception and Spiritual Cultivation
Duàn Yì's mental cultivation develops alongside his physical and internal strength.
- His sharpened senses allow him to read attack trajectories from sight, sound, air flow, and subtle bodily perception. 201
- He can conceal his presence so completely that spiritual sense registers only emptiness. 483
- He uses the mind's eye to observe qi flows, identify flaws, and comprehend the power of heaven and earth in combat. 384 606
- The Finger Profound Scripture deepens his spirit refinement, helps him perceive the Heavenly Dao, and provides a basis for deriving new martial arts. 709
