Chunin Exams and the Leaf Destruction Plan

Sunagakure sent Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro to Konohagakure for the Chunin Exams. Kankuro openly provoked the Leaf genin, while Gaara introduced himself to Sasuke as “Gaara of the Sand.” 23

The village later joined Orochimaru and Otogakure in the Leaf Destruction Plan. Sasuke considered Sunagakure a declining force and doubted that it and the newly formed Sound Village could truly destroy Konoha. 24

Gaara’s loss of control during his match with Sasuke disrupted the operation. With Gaara injured and unable to safely release Shukaku, Baki ordered the Sand siblings to withdraw rather than risk indiscriminate casualties among their own forces. 33 Konoha’s prepared defenses ambushed the invading Sand and Sound Ninja, causing the plan to fail; Sunagakure suffered heavy losses. 34 36

Gaara’s Leadership

Gaara later became Sunagakure’s Kazekage, with Temari and Kankuro serving among the village’s prominent ninja. 149 156 His position did not eliminate internal political tension: when he was captured, Sunagakure’s elders debated selecting a replacement Kazekage rather than immediately organizing a rescue. 158

The Akatsuki Assault

Akatsuki captured Gaara, prompting Sunagakure to send an emergency distress letter to Konoha. 156 When Team 7 arrived, the village’s main gate was still being cleared, unexploded tags remained inside, and Sand Ninja had stationed ballistae near the entrance against possible threats. 157 158

Kankuro had been critically injured by Gaara’s attackers, while the village’s leadership struggled to balance the rescue with concerns over political stability. 158 159 Konoha ultimately took the lead in tracking and recovering Gaara, with Kakashi’s ninja hounds following the Kazekage’s scent. 159

After Gaara was rescued and returned safely, Sunagakure’s people gathered to welcome him. His willingness to protect the village during Deidara’s attack changed many villagers’ view of him. 170

Five Kage Summit

At the Five Kage Summit, Gaara remained composed despite the Tsuchikage’s provocations. 231 He was unaware of allegations that Sunagakure had previously hired Akatsuki as mercenaries, and the Raikage urged him to question the village’s elders about the claim. 231

Gaara supported Konoha during the summit’s confrontations and backed the creation of an Allied Shinobi Forces against Akatsuki. 232 236 He also accepted that his youth and lack of war experience made him unsuitable to command the alliance. 236

Fourth Great Ninja War

Sunagakure contributed personnel to the Allied Shinobi Forces. Gaara and Jiraiya were assigned to intercept powerful enemy combatants, while Kankuro’s squad was selected for a surprise attack against the enemy’s main base. 249

Five Elements Conference

Following the war, Sunagakure’s leadership joined the other Five Kage and their Daimyo in discussions over Sasuke’s proposal to merge the Five Great Nations and Five Great Ninja Villages. 336 337 The later conference considered integrating resources, removing grain tariffs, and allowing ninja to train across different environments as part of a broader unification plan. 338
