Background

Jiang Sheng was rescued from a river as a child by a kind old man, who took him to Yuanjiao and raised him. His cold disposition led other children to shun him and spread rumors that he was cursed or born of a river monster; Jiang Sheng remained unmoved and gradually came to prefer solitude. 114

He possessed exceptional comprehension, root bone, and talent from an early age, learning sword techniques and other methods as soon as they were taught and extrapolating beyond them. He eventually became a Golden Core True Disciple of the Daoist Sect, remaining detached even during the ceremony celebrating his elevation. 114

During his early travels, Jiang Sheng cultivated in seclusion at Green Screen Mountain and Green Profound Temple. Though he avoided visitors, his reputation was sufficient to affect all of Green Mountain County, drawing gentry and merchants to the mountain foot. 40

After Jiang Sheng and Lin Fan shattered Ma Yunzhi's Golden Core, Jiang Sheng was separated from Lin Fan in Thousand Layered Mountain Valley. Exhausted, badly injured, and without spiritual power, he wandered into Pingyuan County in the Zheng Kingdom, where Jiang Dewen gave him shelter. Months of recuperation restored his damaged meridians and made him stronger than before. 73

Appearance

Jiang Sheng is repeatedly described as an exceptionally handsome, ethereal young Daoist whose calm bearing makes him seem detached from the mortal world. His face resembles polished jade, his eyes are compared to stars, and he carries himself with the uprightness of a pine or crane. 73

  • Clear, cold, jade-like features and star-like eyes. 73
  • Straight-backed posture and light, airy demeanor. 73
  • Often wears Daoist robes, a jade crown, cloud belt, and boots. 123
  • Later attire includes an Azure Jade Star-Plucking Crown, Black-Bottomed Lotus-Patterned Robe, Hornless Dragon Bright Jade Belt, Cloud-Leveling Four-Direction Boots, and Crane Garment. 1312

Personality

Jiang Sheng is outwardly gentle, measured, and composed, but fundamentally aloof. He disregards gossip, wealth, prestige, and attempts to draw him into political obligations. 73 88 609

He values promises, righteousness, and the suffering of ordinary people. He has aided victims of demonic disasters, taught children in remote villages, and repeatedly chosen the safety of his disciples over victory against powerful enemies. 445 480 566

Despite his refined manner, Jiang Sheng is decisive and formidable when challenged. He favors confronting the sharpest point directly with his sword, and reacts harshly to those who threaten his allies, disciples, or Penglai lineage. 554 1054
