Background / History
The Three Realms originated from the merger of the Mountain and River Realm, Pan Feng Realm, and Hengsha Realm. Their World Barriers connected and fused over ten years; colliding lands produced new immortal mountains and Blessed Lands, while the Underworld became distinct and the Nine Heavens clearer 451 452.
The merged world exceeded the combined scale of its three predecessors. Its strengthened World Source established it as a mid-level Chaos Great Thousand World, with the three layers of Heaven, Earth, and Human taking shape within it 452. Once it stabilized, it occupied the central axis of the Chaos Great Thousand and became the Central Extreme around which later realm mergers were drawn 469 772.
The completed Heaven and Earth Rules altered cultivation throughout the world. Qing Yan Dao Lord and Ming Yang Dao Lord used this change to overcome their former limits and enter the Dao Holding Realm, becoming True Yang Mastering the Dao 453. Conversely, Void Refinement cultivators and Pure Yangs below the highest level found themselves more heavily restricted by the strengthened laws 452 453.
The Ling Hua Realm later merged into the Eastern Heaven after ten years of stabilization, establishing a precedent for further integration 537. Following the Great Mystic Gate Tribulation, numerous defeated or subordinate great, middle, and small thousand worlds were incorporated; the Three Realms eventually encompassed countless worlds and became the core of the heavens and myriad worlds 1259 1303.

Five Continents and Four Seas
The Eastern Domain Continent is the principal foundation of the Mystic Gate, formed from the old Eastern and Central Domain Continents together with Xuanzhou and Yingzhou of Pan Feng 452. The Western Domain Continent is principally associated with Buddhism, while the Central Domain Continent falls under the Heavenly Court. Daoism and Buddhism both maintain influence in the Southern Domain Continent; the Northern Domain Continent was allotted to the Demon Race, spirits, monsters, and ghostly beings 452 474.
The Four Seas expanded alongside the world itself. As their scale increased, they were divided into sea realms, each no larger than a middle thousand world and guarded by a Dragon Monarch; each sea contains more than one hundred such sea realms 1391.
Heavenly Gates
The Heavenly Court established four transit Heavenly Palaces and corresponding Heavenly Gates in the east, south, west, and north. These gates serve simultaneously as entrances, teleportation arrays, and defensive barriers, and are guarded by Azure Purple Edict Heavenly Gods selected by the Four Great Emperors 454 528.
- South Heaven Gate — a principal thoroughfare into the Three Realms, protected by heavenly soldiers, heavenly generals, and Tiangong Battle Puppets 1337.
- Four Heavenly Gates — restrict access to the Nine Heavens, especially for beings below Void Refinement 454.
Governance and Major Powers
The Three Realms are shaped by three principal traditions:
- Eastern Heaven Daoist Sect — the Daoist power centered on Penglai, Qinghua, Tianhe, and their allied lineages. It governs much of the eastern sphere and possesses multiple Dao-Ruling Heavenly Venerates in later eras 798 1337.
- Central Heavenly Court — the divine authority centered in the Nine Heavens Palace and ruled by the Golden Palace Heavenly Emperor 454 529.
- Western Heaven Buddhist Sect — the Buddhist power represented by Golden Awareness Buddha Ancestor and the Western Heaven 725 805.
The Demon Race also holds the Northern Domain Continent as its recognized territory. This distribution was intended to prevent any one race from monopolizing the Three Realms’ Destiny 452.
The Heavenly Court’s formal jurisdiction does not equate to complete direct control: many Star Lords and regional powers do not obey the Heavenly Emperor outright, while Daoist and Buddhist powers retain extensive territories and Daoist Temples 474.
Laws and World Effects
The Three Realms’ laws were born from both the decisions of its Dao-ruling powers and the inherent strengthening of the merged world itself 520.
- Upper-realm restriction — Void Refinement, Body Integration, Mahayana, and Entering the Dao Pure Yang cultivators face increasing Heaven and Earth and Law Restrictions 452.
- Greater lower-realm opportunity — richer Spiritual Energy, Origin Energy, and a stronger World Source create more opportunities for Heaven’s Chosen and cultivators in the Middle and Lower Six Realms 453 561.
- Limited Dao leverage — Entering the Dao Pure Yangs can no longer freely wield the Chaos Great Dao within the world as they did before the merger; Dao Holding and Mastering the Dao beings retain greater authority 452 453.
- Protection of mortal foundations — cultivators may establish Daoist Temples by bringing worlds into the Three Realms, but are forbidden from privately usurping spiritual veins belonging to mortals in the Five Continents and Four Seas 1204.
- Divine positions — positions of fruit require a corresponding concept to arise, then must be nurtured by the Heaven and Earth Laws over thousands or tens of thousands of years before manifesting naturally 1134.
