Background and History

Susanoo is Izanagi and Izanami’s son and one of the Three Noble Children alongside Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi. Banished from Takamanohara, he rules Izumo Country in the God Realm. His hostility toward the gods of Takamanohara makes him a potential ally for Liuyun 625 653.

Five hundred years after arriving in Izumo Country, Liuyun is summoned to Susanoo’s palace. Susanoo questions why the human has never visited him, but comes to value his strength and willingness to oppose Takamanohara. He accepts Liuyun’s offer of allegiance and tests it by ordering him to kill a True God and seize the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi 626 628 631.

Liuyun completes the mission and returns with the sword, pursued by Ninigi-no-Mikoto. Susanoo admits him to Izumo Shrine and confronts Ninigi, bringing Izumo into open conflict with Ashihara Country and Takamanohara. During the ensuing war, Susanoo appoints Liuyun General Kamui and gives him the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi for battle 633 635 638.

Personality

Susanoo is proud, combative, and quick to mock his opponents. He resents his father and siblings, but values capable fighters and protects those he considers his own. He honors his promise to shelter Liuyun after the sword mission, and later seeks Izanami’s help for Take-Mikazuchi-no-Mikoto’s soul 628 633 642 653.

His trust is not unconditional: when two attackers target Liuyun, Susanoo initially watches to see whether his general can survive without help. He becomes furious when Amaterasu’s True Sun Fire enters the fight 636.

Great God combat

Susanoo is described as a God of War at the pinnacle of the Great God Realm 631.

• His palm strike sends Ninigi-no-Mikoto flying despite the latter blocking it with the Yata no Kagami 633.
• One furious punch forces five Great Gods backward and causes a spatial collapse at its point of impact 650.

Storms and lightning

• Summons storm clouds over Izumo Country to shield it from Amaterasu’s concentrated sunlight 634.
• Strikes ten cities in Ashihara Country with lightning after True Sun Fire burns a city in Izumo 634.

Equipment and Divine Artifacts

• Totsuka-no-Tsurugi — Susanoo’s natal divine artifact, passed down by Izanagi. He lends it to Take-Mikazuchi-no-Mikoto during the war 639 647.
• Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi — A divine sword Susanoo found after slaying the Eight-Headed Serpent. He retrieves it through Liuyun’s mission and later grants it to him 635 638 639.

Relationships

• Izanagi — Father. He severely injures Susanoo during a dispute and later intervenes to stop him from attacking other Great Gods 628 650.
• Izanami — Mother. Susanoo prays to her for help protecting Take-Mikazuchi-no-Mikoto’s soul in Yomi 653.
• Amaterasu Omikami — Sister and wartime adversary. Their conflict escalates into attacks on each other’s territories 625 634.
• Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto — Brother and fellow Noble Child; their opposing sides clash during the war 625 647.
• Uchiha Liuyun — General Kamui and ally. Susanoo entrusts him with the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi and supports his challenge against Ninigi-no-Mikoto 638 668.
