Background and History

Tsunade lived with her younger brother Nawaki in one of the two remaining estates of the former Senju Clan Grounds. Mito Uzumaki was her grandmother, and Kushina Uzumaki lived in the neighboring estate 31 35 47.

She took an interest in Uchiha Liuyun while watching Kushina’s Ninja Academy exam. After investigating his family, she learned that his mother had Senju ancestry. Mito later warned Tsunade that Liuyun might already have awakened the Sharingan and that revealing his unusual abilities could endanger him; Tsunade kept the matter from even the Third Hokage 39 47 71.

During the Rain Country war, Tsunade fought, treated casualties, and developed an antidote for Hanzō’s salamander poison. She later argued at Konoha’s Jonin Council that every ninja squad should have a medical ninja. The Third Hokage initially rejected the proposal, then agreed to reconsider it after Liuyun and Kato Dan supported her 117 184.

Years later, Tsunade agreed to train medical ninja in the Hidden Sound Village for one month after losing a contest of strength to Liuyun 328. She subsequently returned with Jiraiya to investigate the God Tree, despite Orochimaru’s warning not to approach it without permission. Akatsuki members discovered and attacked them, but they escaped 417 418 419.

Personality

Tsunade is protective of Kushina and Liuyun, though she often expresses it by scolding them. She challenged Liuyun’s intentions toward Kushina when they were young, checked him for injuries at the front, and later wept over Konoha’s treatment of him 47 120 239.

She is outspoken about medical support for shinobi, confronting the Third Hokage when he rejected her proposal 184. She is also fiercely competitive and an avid gambler: repeated losses to Liuyun left her in debt, but did not stop her from trying to win the money back 142 185.

Abilities & Skills

Medical ninjutsu

• Treats battlefield injuries and develops medicines; her early antidote made Hanzō’s salamander poison nonfatal if administered in time, though it did not completely neutralize the poison 117.
• Uses Creation Rebirth to immediately heal a fractured wrist during her contest with Liuyun 328.

Monster Strength Fist and Strength of a Hundred Technique

• Concentrates Chakra in her fists and feet, then releases it in an instant burst of force; the technique demands precise Chakra control 180.
• Teaches the technique to Liuyun and Kushina. In a later strength contest, she releases her Yin Seal to increase her strength, but Liuyun overpowers her 180 328.
• Breaks at least two of Jiraiya’s ribs with a punch during a wagered sparring match 141.

Poison and sensory techniques

• Uses poisoned needles in combat 138.
• Uses a sensory slug while investigating the God Tree with Jiraiya 419.

• Blood-altering goggles — change the color in which she sees blood, allowing her to fight despite her hemophobia 239.
