History
Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade were already famous in Konoha before Hanzō of the Salamander gave them their collective title. During the war with the Rain Country, Tsunade developed an antidote that made Hanzō’s salamander poison nonfatal if administered in time 20 117.
The three repeatedly confronted Hanzō. Despite fighting together, they could barely survive his speed and poison. After another battle left them wounded and nearly out of Chakra, Hanzō spared them and named them the Konoha Sannin in recognition of their endurance 166.
Uchiha Liuyun arrived immediately afterward and defeated Hanzō. When Liuyun moved to kill him, all three Sannin asked him to stop because Hanzō had spared their lives. Reports within Konoha credited the Sannin and Liuyun together with the victory, though Hanzō publicly identified Liuyun as the one who defeated him 168 170 204.
Their paths later diverged. Orochimaru left Konoha and became the leader of Hidden Sound Village; Jiraiya and Tsunade remained associated with Konoha’s wartime efforts. When the latter two investigated the God Tree near Hidden Sound, Orochimaru barred them from the village after they ignored his warning to stay away. His decision was also meant to keep them from another potentially fatal encounter with Akatsuki 348 413 418 420.
Members and Techniques
- Orochimaru — Uses snakes and a Ryūchi Cave summon. Later masters Sage Mode and leads Hidden Sound Village 123 370 413.
- Jiraiya — Summons Gamabunta and uses hair-based techniques, including Needle Jizō. In Sage Mode, toads gather Natural Energy for him 123 138 436.

Relationships
