Background / History
Magneto was arrested for allegedly assassinating the president and imprisoned beneath the Pentagon. During his absence, the Brotherhood lost many members to death or capture, including former Hellfire Club members Red Devil, Riptide, and the White Queen. After the X-Men defeated him at Alcatraz and injected him with Suppression Serum, his mutant ability disappeared temporarily; once it returned, he killed the agents assigned to monitor him and went underground to rebuild his forces. 98
He recovered his helmet to avoid Professor X's detection, recalled mutants to his side, and reorganized the Brotherhood. Juggernaut and Enchantress joined him, while Mystique refused recruitment after Magneto had previously abandoned her. Information from Mystique led him to a U.S. military laboratory in Japan, where he confirmed that the White Queen and other mutants were imprisoned for mutant-gene research. 98
Magneto rescued the White Queen and initially sought to use her psychic power against Viper, whose enhanced physical ability had forced him to retreat. 100 101 His search for a longer life and greater strength subsequently brought him to Bai Xing, whose Magnetic Field Seed offered a path beyond his restricted native magnetic ability. 103 105
Personality
Magneto is driven by the belief that mutant survival, dignity, and rights can only be secured through power. He rejects compromise when he sees it as submission, arguing that a mutant nation is necessary so mutants can live openly rather than in fear. 111
He is strategic and capable of coordinating allies with complementary abilities, but he becomes ruthless toward those he considers oppressors or threats to mutantkind. His destruction of Genosha's former regime and later campaign against the Human Council demonstrate his willingness to use mass violence to establish security through fear. 101 114 128 129
Despite his severity, he views himself as a protector. He promises to sacrifice himself first if necessary, cares for Quicksilver as his son, and accepts responsibility for defending Genosha against existential threats. 136 141
Appearance
Magneto is an aged but authoritative man who commonly appears in red attire. He wears a helmet to block psychic intrusion. 98
- Aged face with a commanding presence. 98
- Red battle robe during the preparation for the Sun Hammer mission. 136
- Helmet used to prevent Professor X from locating or mentally affecting him. 98 100
- Emits blood-red electrical currents and manifests a blood-red electromagnetic field after entering Magnetic Field Rotation. 111
Abilities & Skills
Mutant Magnetic Manipulation
Magneto's original mutant power controls metal and electromagnetic phenomena, though its potential is restricted in this world compared with his comic counterpart. 125
- Disabled hundreds of Smiling Armor units by causing their weapons and power systems to fail. 111
- Shapes nearby metal into restraints, shields, and large-scale destructive constructs. 98 100 114
- Can dismantle and gather metal across a city-scale battlefield. 114
- Uses electromagnetic force to fly and to manipulate recording equipment for global broadcasts. 128
- His original ability was vulnerable to Suppression Serum and could be countered by plastic weapons. 98
Magnetic Field Rotation
A cultivation system acquired through Bai Xing's Magnetic Field Seed. Magneto entered the realm immediately through innate magnetic talent, accumulated mastery, and his will to protect mutantkind. 111 182
- Enhances physical ability alongside magnetic power. 111
- Creates a powerful electromagnetic field that warps space slightly and carries liquid, blood-red ions. 111
- Grants Magnetic Detection, allowing him to locate targets through electromagnetic sensing. 129
- Enables Mind Reading through brainwave analysis; deeper mastery can access memories stored in neurons. 143
- Magnetic Field Rotation does not inherently strengthen the soul and is disadvantaged against powerful soul manipulation. 96
Magnetic Martial Way
Magneto applies Magnetic Field Rotation through martial arts rather than treating it solely as conventional electromagnetic control. 13
- Boundless Blood Battle Blade — Forms enormous or numerous blood-red blades for large-scale attacks, suppression, and battlefield disruption. 127 141 142
- Guardian Killing Fist — A direct fist technique used repeatedly at close range. 133 134
- His documented repertoire initially contains only these two offensive techniques. 133
Divine Demon Indestructible Body
A third Magnetic Martial Way developed during Magneto's clash with Bai Xing. 134
- Rapidly heals injuries and forms a will-powered defense stronger than the Alloy Battle Body. 134
- Draws strength from conviction and the trust of Genosha's mutants. 134
- In space, it boosts his power but cannot fully negate the heavy energy drain of prolonged vacuum combat. 141 142
- Its divine and demonic aspects can become unbalanced by Magneto's circumstances and emotions. 153
Heavenly Magnet Demon
Magneto's transformed state after mutant extinction shattered the balance of his Divine Demon Indestructible Body. 153
- The loss of Genosha's sixteen million mutants and their trust caused the “demon” aspect to dominate. 153
- Maximizes his slaughter and combat capabilities, driven by vengeance against Professor X. 153
- Reached 200,000 Horsepower in battle with Professor X. 154
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Helmet — Shields him from psychic detection and control; recovered after his powers returned. 98 100
- Magnetic Field Seed — Implanted by Bai Xing, enabling his direct entry into Magnetic Field Rotation. 111
- Hope Fighter — Command vessel used in the assault on the Sun Hammer; Magneto named it for the hope it carried for mutantkind. 136
Relationships
- Professor X / Charles — Former ally and ideological rival. Their conflict over coexistence versus militant self-determination later becomes a working compromise in governing Genosha, before escalating into a catastrophic confrontation after Charles orchestrates mutant genocide. 111 130 154
- Bai Xing — Benefactor, challenger, and observer. Bai Xing grants Magneto the Magnetic Field Seed, praises his conviction, then pushes him to develop further through battle. 111 112 133 134
- White Queen / Emma Grace Frost — Former Hellfire Club comrade and founding Brotherhood member. Magneto rescues her from a government laboratory; she joins his efforts against Viper. 98 101
- Juggernaut — Loyal Brotherhood subordinate who follows Magneto's orders. 98
- Enchantress — Brotherhood operative whose hormonal ability helps obtain intelligence on the Japanese military base. 98
- Mystique / Raven — Former associate Magneto had abandoned; she initially rejects renewed recruitment but later works within Genosha and defends his bond with its people. 98 134
- Quicksilver / Pietro — His son. Their relationship is initially strained, but Magneto accepts his assistance against Donald Trask and later promises him he will return from the Sun Hammer mission. 129 136
- Apocalypse — Rival Magnetic Field powerhouse. Magneto battles him during the conflict surrounding the Pyramid Altar and later returns at 130,000 Horsepower to confront him. 149
- Life Legion — Mutant military force defending Genosha and carrying out Magneto's campaign against the Human Council and Sentinels. 127 130
Story Role / Major Arcs
Brotherhood Reconstruction and White Queen Rescue
Following recovery from Suppression Serum, Magneto rebuilds the Brotherhood, investigates a Japanese military laboratory, and rescues the White Queen. He is forced to retreat after underestimating Viper's enhanced power, then seeks White Queen's psychic ability as a countermeasure. 98 100 101
Magnetic Field Seed and the Mutant Nation
Magneto receives a Magnetic Field Seed from Bai Xing and directly enters Magnetic Field Rotation. He declares his goal of gathering mutants, fighting for their survival, and establishing a mutant nation regardless of potential nuclear retaliation. 111
Genosha War and the Human Council
Magneto leads an attack on Genosha, destroys the institutions oppressing mutants, and calls mutants worldwide to rebuild the island as their nation. 114 115 He later defeats Eighth-Generation Sentinels, destroys the Human Council's Main Module beneath the White House, and hunts down its members. 127 128 129
Following these campaigns, Magneto and Professor X divide responsibility: Magneto leads the war effort while Charles handles diplomacy, peace, and nation-building. 130
Bai Xing's Challenge
Bai Xing challenges Magneto in the Sahara, defeats him, and warns him of a greater threat. Magneto's resulting emotional turmoil and the faith of Genosha's population lead to the birth of the Divine Demon Indestructible Body. 133 134
Sun Hammer Operation
Facing Bastion and the future Sentinel threat, Magneto orders the construction of the Hope Fighter and leads a task force toward the Sun Hammer near the sun. 135 136 He holds off countless Nimrod Sentinels so the infiltration team can destroy the Sun Hammer's four control rings, sending the Mother Module into the sun. 141 142
Heavenly Magnet Demon
After Genosha's mutant population is exterminated, Magneto survives underground and transforms into the Heavenly Magnet Demon. Driven by vengeance, he returns to confront Professor X, whose actions caused the genocide. 153 154
