Background / History
Vegeta arrives on Earth with Nappa as a Frieza Force conqueror, immediately judging the planet by its sale value. The pair destroys East City and kills countless inhabitants while seeking the Dragon Balls and information on Raditz's death. 394
He treats Earth's defenders as beneath him, but Bai Xing defeats him in base form and forces him to use his Great Ape transformation. Vegeta creates an artificial moon, retains control in his Great Ape state, and raises his battle power to 150,000; nevertheless, Bai Xing and Goku inflict severe injuries. Goku persuades Bai Xing to spare him, forcing Vegeta to flee Earth in humiliation. 396 397
During his recovery, Vegeta recognizes that surviving near-fatal injuries has awakened a Saiyan growth trait. Refusing to wear a scouter again, he pursues Namek's Dragon Balls in hopes of gaining immortality and surpassing Bai Xing and Goku. 398
Vegeta is captured by Slug's forces en route to Namek, but uses Frieza's interest in the Dragon Balls to convince Slug to act against Frieza. On Namek, he accepts a Warp Bracelet to evade scouters, kills Cui and Dodoria, and temporarily serves Slug while intending to betray him. 399 401
Dodoria reveals that Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta and exterminated the Saiyan people because their growing strength made them difficult to control. Vegeta kills Dodoria in rage, resolving to overthrow Frieza; he also massacres a Namekian village to seize its Dragon Ball and hides it from both Frieza and Slug. 402
After Slug betrays him and takes the hidden Dragon Ball, Vegeta fights Zarbon, is defeated by Zarbon's transformation, and survives another near-death recovery. He later attempts to challenge Slug as a Great Ape, only to be casually thrown aside and paralyzed by Frieza. 405 407 410
Vegeta survives the Namek crisis through Krillin's healing and returns to Earth with Goku, Piccolo, and Bai Xing. Bai Xing grants him Magnetic Force, and Vegeta makes becoming a Super Saiyan his overriding goal. 412 414
He eventually achieves Super Saiyan and repeatedly spars with Bai Xing and Goku. His rivalry becomes less solitary during the Cooler conflict, where he and Goku coordinate attacks despite Vegeta's refusal to accept help at first. 416 418 419
After Bulma becomes pregnant with his child, Vegeta continues pursuing greater strength rather than settling into ordinary life. He trains in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, reaches Super Saiyan 2, and confronts Android 16 alone to prove himself. 422 439 440
Vegeta joins Bai Xing, Goku, and Gohan against Super Gero's Battle Star, infiltrating the construct to locate Super Gero while the others contain its super cannon. Following the victory, he trains for seven years in the upgraded Hyperbolic Time Chamber, masters Super Saiyan 3, and challenges Cell at the World Martial Arts Tournament. 449 452 453
Even after reaching 480 billion power in Super Saiyan 3, Vegeta remains unable to overcome Bai Xing's Mystic State. He is frustrated by the widening gap but continues to seek greater strength. 463
Appearance
Vegeta is initially short—roughly five feet four inches—and wears Frieza Force combat armor. His stature and musculature increase after developing Magnetic Force, eventually bringing him close to Goku's height. 396 418
- In Great Ape form, he grows to more than sixty feet tall, develops black fur and scarlet eyes, and retains his rational mind. 396
- In Super Saiyan, his hair turns gold and his aura becomes golden. 418
- In Super Saiyan 3, his golden hair extends backward in long spikes, his eyebrows vanish, and his brow ridge becomes more pronounced. 453
Personality
Vegeta is intensely prideful, status-conscious, and contemptuous of perceived weakness. He repeatedly invokes his royal bloodline and considers Goku's low-class origins an insult to the Saiyan hierarchy. 397 431
His pride makes him reckless when he holds an advantage and unwilling to accept aid when overwhelmed. He underestimates opponents such as Bai Xing, Zarbon, Cell, and Super Gero, then responds to humiliation with even harsher training. 396 405 442 453
He is also calculating and adaptable. He exploits Slug's rivalry with Frieza, accepts the Warp Bracelet to evade detection, hides a Dragon Ball, and uses battle experience to defeat stronger or less disciplined opponents. 399 401 402
Though he initially views Earth mainly as a place to train and prove himself, he gradually develops concern for Bulma and their child. He takes pride in Trunks' talent after witnessing him transform into a Super Saiyan at a young age. 451 452
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Physiology
Vegeta belongs to a warrior race with exceptional combat instincts and a recovery-based growth trait.
- Recovering from the brink of death dramatically raises his battle power. 398 402
- His combat experience and “Perfect Realm” far surpass Dodoria's. 402
- His pride, obsession, and refusal to yield make him unusually compatible with Magnetic Force. 418
Great Ape Transformation
Vegeta can create an artificial moon and transform when exposed to its Blutz Waves.
- Creates artificial moons by condensing ki. 396 405 409
- Receives a tenfold power increase while transformed. 396
- Retains his intelligence and speech in Great Ape form, which he attributes to his royal Saiyan blood. 396
- The form is vulnerable to opponents whose power vastly exceeds his own; Slug throws Great Ape Vegeta aside, while Frieza paralyzes him with one strike. 410
Super Saiyan Transformations
Vegeta progresses through three documented Super Saiyan forms.
- Super Saiyan — first achieved after returning from Namek; provides a fiftyfold base-power increase. 416 418
- Super Saiyan 2 — gained through Hyperbolic Time Chamber training and used against Android 16 and Cell. 439 440 453
- Super Saiyan 3 — a four-hundredfold base-power transformation; Vegeta can sustain it longer than expected due to Magnetic Force. 452 454
- His transformations are driven by relentless pursuit of strength, rather than the pure-hearted conditions discussed for techniques such as the Spirit Bomb. 417
Magnetic Force
Bai Xing grants Vegeta Magnetic Force after the destruction of Namek, enabling him to survive in space and supplement his ki. 414
- Uses it to transmit information in a vacuum. 416
- Combines it with ki to improve his combat output against Cooler. 418
- Performs Cell Reorganization, allowing severe bodily injuries and lost limbs to regenerate if his heart and brain remain intact. 418 449
- Greatly extends his Super Saiyan 3 endurance. 454
Ki Techniques
- Galick Gun — Vegeta's signature full-power energy cannon; on Earth, he attempts to use it to destroy the planet. 396
- Flash Cannon — a powerful blast used against Goku and Bai Xing, severely injuring both. 397
- Stellar Barrier — defensive technique developed during the battle with Super Android 13. 425
- Stellar Reverse Flow — technique developed alongside Stellar Barrier while exploring a higher realm beyond Super Saiyan. 425
- Eternal Radiance Cannon — advanced ultimate move used against Android 16 and later to severely injure Cell. 440 454
- Purple Crystal Wave Fist — a close-combat enhancement evolved from condensing Flash Cannon into his hands; eventually usable as a basic attack. 462
Equipment / Items
- Frieza Force scouter — used upon arriving on Earth; Vegeta abandons scouters after realizing Frieza could monitor his subordinates through them. 396 399
- Frieza Force battle armor — worn during his service under Frieza; repeatedly damaged or destroyed in high-level battles. 398 402
- Warp Bracelet — issued by Slug's force to block Frieza Force scouters; later disabled by Slug when he seizes Vegeta's Dragon Ball. 401 407
Relationships
- Son Goku — Primary rival. Vegeta resents Goku's strength and low-class origins, but they repeatedly coordinate against Cooler, Super Android 13, Super Gero, and other threats. 397 419 425 449
- Bai Xing — Rival and repeated superior opponent. Bai Xing defeats Vegeta on Earth, grants him Magnetic Force, and remains the benchmark Vegeta is determined to surpass. 397 414 463
- Bulma — Partner and mother of his son, Trunks. Vegeta stays in her home, accepts her gravity technology, and later shows concern for her and their child. 414 417 451
- Trunks — Son. Vegeta takes visible pride in Trunks' early Super Saiyan transformation and begins reconsidering his belief that mixed-blood Saiyans are inferior. 452
- Frieza — Former master and enemy. Vegeta learns Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta and kills Dodoria after learning the truth. 402
- Slug — Temporary ally and mutual betrayer. Vegeta uses Slug to weaken Frieza, while Slug uses Vegeta as a pawn and later steals his Dragon Ball. 399 401 407
- Nappa — Fellow Saiyan invader during the assault on Earth. 394
- Cooler — Frieza's brother and adversary. Vegeta confronts him in space and refuses Goku's initial offer of assistance. 418
