Background and History

Golden Lion's greatest period came before the Battle of Edd War, when his physical condition, willpower, influence, Float-Float Fruit mastery, and swordsmanship were all at their height. His Flying Pirates once held an exceptionally broad sphere of influence in the New World. 34 317

One week before Roger's execution, Shiki stormed Marine Headquarters alone to confront the Marines over Roger. He massacred one hundred elite officers, destroyed Marineford facilities with enormous crossing Sword Qi, and fought Garp and Sengoku simultaneously through the night. The two Marines eventually defeated him through their coordination and numerical advantage; Shiki was sent to Level 6 of Impel Down, Infinite Hell. 34 36

Carlos entered Infinite Hell soon afterward and offered Shiki freedom in return for Haki instruction, body-technique teachings, and cooperation. Carlos also revealed that Roger had surrendered due to terminal illness rather than being captured, restoring Shiki's confidence in Roger's strength. After Carlos freed him, Shiki returned to Lion King Island, personally executed two rebellious officers, and reconsolidated the nearly splintered Flying Pirates. 39 43

Shiki later supplied Carlos with weapons worth over one billion Beli, supply channels, and eleven secret techniques focused on swordsmanship and body techniques. His teachings included highly refined methods for Armament and Observation Haki. 71 275

When Shiki reunited with Carlos, he objected to Carlos's cooperation with the World Government and tested the Divine Eye Pirates' strength against the Six Paths of Pain. Although he could counter their initial barrage and withstand their combined assault, he was eventually suppressed by their coordination and Naraka Path's revival ability; Carlos stopped the spar before it became a genuine death match. 275 276 277

Shiki ultimately accepted deeper cooperation with Carlos after acknowledging that the Divine Eye Pirates could not simply be absorbed into his own crew.
