Xu Xinlan was born to a family whose fortunes declined after her father, a peak Qi Condensation cultivator, died attempting to advance to Purple Mansion. At sixteen, her elders arranged her marriage to a collateral descendant of the Chen family. Her husband had lost his path of cultivation to witchcraft and gu, but treated her well, entrusting her with the family’s shops, mines, and residence. She became a widow three years later and upheld his dying wish by maintaining the household herself. 406

As the head of a merchant family, Xu Xinlan faced persistent pressure from those seeking her wealth. Although she outwardly claimed to suffer from poison-induced disfigurement, she could control the poison’s effects; the veil and blemishes were a deliberate defense against unwanted attention. 404 405 Her cultivation remained at the seventh level of Qi Condensation, insufficient to deter stronger predators, while her cousin Zuo Xiaomo could provide only limited protection. 406
