Background / History
Lu Ran grew up in Rain Alley City. His parents divorced when he was five; his mother, Qiao Wanjun, took his younger sister away to the capital, while Lu Ran later returned to Rain Alley City at sixteen. His father, Lu Xing, died defending Rain Alley City, a loss that continued to shape Lu Ran's sense of duty and resentment toward those who insulted his family. 191 325 979
During his student years, Lu Ran's encounter with the Yan Paper person at the shrine and his status as a believer marked him as an outsider. He was openly targeted by Kou Yingquan and was judged by others for the reputation attached to his faith. Jiang Ruyi and Deng Yutang nevertheless chose to remain on his team. 2 14
Lu Ran became a disciple of the Immortal Goat and gained access to the Gods and Devils Sculpture Garden. He treated its powers as tools to survive, protect Rain Alley City, and eventually challenge the system imposed by gods and devils. 13 102 223
His defense of Rain Alley City during the Night of Many Ghosts earned him public gratitude, restored the Xiaguang Saber to him, and granted him a trace of divinity. Soon afterward, he entered Great Xia's Heavenly Pride program. 171 173
After arriving at Holy Spirit Mountain, Lu Ran became the Sect Leader of the Ran Sect. He established operations at Yunhai Cliff and Ink Sea Bay, recruited believers and evil beings, and openly declared his intention to overthrow the gods and devils. 427 439 520

- Often carries twin blades, especially during his early Heavenly Pride period. 173

Personality
Lu Ran is ambitious, competitive, and unusually candid. After being abandoned by a former teammate because of his identity, he admitted that he wanted to stay ahead of everyone else and make her regret leaving. 14 He can be teasing and irreverent with friends, especially Qiao Yuanxi, Jiang Ruyi, and Deng Yuxiang, but his humor does not erase his stubbornness.
He takes responsibility seriously. Lu Ran repeatedly chooses dangerous rescue missions and city-defense duties even when failure is possible, believing that he cannot refuse to try when lives are at stake. 175 219 He also actively resists becoming numb to death and violence despite his increasing exposure to departed souls and battlefields. 86
As a leader, Lu Ran values loyalty, growth, and personal dignity. He distributes resources among his followers, provides avenues for their advancement, and intervenes for subordinates such as Yan Shuangzi and Lu Yuan. 446 565 671 However, his resolve can become autocratic; Yu Changsheng notes that Lu Ran is difficult to dissuade once he has decided on a course of action. 416
