Background

Warring States Period

Madara led the Uchiha on the eastern battlefield against the Senju. Although he could temporarily agree to a truce with Hashirama, he recognized that Hashirama was stronger and became determined to gain power beyond the Three Tomoe Sharingan. 549

Izuna was Madara’s closest attachment. Madara personally completed three S-rank missions to commission the tachi Muko for him, and later blamed Tobirama for Izuna’s fatal injuries. 228 He was notably gentler with Izuna than with anyone else, openly showing relief and affection when his younger brother returned with reinforcements. 549

Konoha and Defection

Madara and Hashirama helped end the clans’ war through an agreement that established Konohagakure. 18 After becoming dissatisfied with the village and its treatment of the Uchiha, Madara called on the clan to leave with him. They chose the peace of Konoha instead, and he departed alone. 1

He considered the clan’s refusal proof of their weakness rather than betrayal. When later confronted by Uchiha who had remained in Konoha, he stated that he—not they—had abandoned the clan. 45

Madara subsequently faked his death through Izanagi, leaving Hashirama and Tobirama to believe he had died. 213

Return and the Moon Eye Plan

After two years of searching, Hashirama found Madara alive. Madara revealed his Moon Eye Plan: achieving peace by placing the world under a genjutsu. 213 224 He returned secretly to Konoha to see whether Tobirama’s adoption of Renye reflected a genuine change in the Senju’s attitude toward the Uchiha. 224

Madara developed an interest in Renye, praised his cooking, and offered to take him as a disciple. Renye refused, choosing to remain in Konoha. 230 Madara nevertheless continued to view Renye as a potential asset for the Moon Eye Plan and later attempted to provoke the awakening of Renye’s Mangekyō Sharingan through emotional manipulation. 252

Rinnegan Campaign

Aware that age was eroding his strength, Madara withdrew into a prepared underground base after his identity was exposed. He awakened the Rinnegan, used the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to extend his life, and cultivated White Zetsu as an intelligence network and army. 414

He began collecting Tailed Beast chakra for the Moon Eye Plan. During his assault on Konoha, he defeated Renye and Tobirama, overwhelmed the village’s defenders, and extracted half of the Nine-Tails’ chakra from Mito Uzumaki. 499 500

Renye’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan eventually became a serious threat. Madara enhanced his failing body by allowing the White Zetsu known as Tobi to attach to him, then countered Renye’s Rinnegan-sealing technique with Wood Release and battlefield deception. 503 507 Renye ultimately killed Madara when his final attempt to persuade him failed. 508 510

Reanimation and Later Events

Madara left a contingency involving Black Zetsu and the Impure World Reincarnation technique. Black Zetsu retrieved his body and revived him in a weakened reanimated state, after which Madara sought a pawn capable of restoring him fully. 510 512

Renye later summoned Madara through Impure World Reincarnation to expose Obito Uchiha’s false claim to Madara’s identity at the Five Kage Summit. Madara was too weakened by the primitive reanimation to fight and was dismissed shortly afterward. 537 538

During the later ninja war, another Madara was restored to life through Obito’s forced use of the Outer Path — Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique. 605 607 He subsequently formed the Rinne Sharingan and unleashed the Infinite Tsukuyomi despite Renye’s warning. 613

Final Years

Following Hashirama’s death, Madara traveled across another timeline and eventually returned to his original one, where nearly everyone he knew was gone. He concluded that Renye had realized the peace that he and Hashirama had failed to create. 791

Near the end of his life, Madara summoned Hashirama’s spirit, asked him to arrange his funeral, and requested that some of his flesh and blood be passed on to Renye. 791

Appearance

Madara is a long-haired Uchiha with dark eyes, a lean and muscular build, and an imposing presence. When Hashirama found him after his apparent death, Madara bore a severe scar running through his back—the wound Hashirama had inflicted. 211

Personality

Madara is proud, uncompromising, and intensely certain of his own judgment. He treats disagreement with the Moon Eye Plan as proof that others cannot understand the Ninja World’s reality, and he refuses to abandon the plan even when opposed by Hashirama or Renye. 478 500 508

He is also calculating. Madara faked his death, concealed his survival, prepared an underground refuge, cultivated White Zetsu, and arranged a posthumous revival plan rather than allowing a single defeat to end his ambitions. 213 414 510

His harshest judgments are often directed at the Uchiha themselves, whom he considers weak and short-sighted for choosing Konoha over his leadership. 45 213 In contrast, Izuna brings out rare tenderness in him, while Hashirama remains the friend whose approval and opposition both continue to affect him. 549 791
