Background / History

Danzō entered the Ninja Academy in Class A alongside Renye, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and other future prominent shinobi. His first encounter with Renye turned hostile when Danzō attacked after taking offense at Renye's stare; Hiruzen stopped the confrontation, but Danzō continued to challenge Renye. His hostility stemmed partly from jealousy over Renye's ties to the Senju clan. 14

He became one of Tobirama Senju's disciples alongside Hiruzen, Kagami, Koharu, and Homura. Danzō was initially dismayed to discover that Hiruzen and the others had also been accepted, and he particularly resented Renye's pre-existing daily training with Tobirama. 34 35

Danzō served repeatedly with Renye and Koharu on missions. He was present when Renye killed a Sand spy despite Tobirama's order to merely expel the target, and later fought a Sand puppeteer before being poisoned and injured. Believing he was dying, Danzō entrusted Renye with his wish to protect Konoha; Renye saved him with an antidote. 60 108

During the war, he helped produce antidotes for poisoned Konoha shinobi and pushed to enter the battlefield to earn merit. Although his stated reasoning invoked Tobirama's teachings about protecting comrades, he was also driven by the desire to surpass Renye's achievements and secure his path to the Hokage position. 120

Danzō fought beside Renye and Koharu against Kinkaku, later joining the operation against the Gold and Silver Brothers. His desire to try the captured Bashō Fan overcame his caution; the tool exhausted his chakra and caused him to collapse. 159 162

Personality

Danzō is fiercely ambitious, competitive, and easily provoked. From childhood, he viewed Renye as both an adversary and an obstacle to his Hokage aspirations, while Hiruzen became his principal rival for the office. 14 120 208

His ambition is tied to a genuine belief that he should protect and strengthen Konoha. He is decisive, realistic, and willing to use harsh measures against perceived threats, traits Tobirama considered valuable in a leader. Danzō assumes office determined to make Konoha stronger, but his authority quickly strains his relationships with his former peers.
