Background / History

Renye's adoption and expulsion

Hashirama arranged for Tobirama to adopt the Uchiha orphan Renye in an effort to reduce Senju–Uchiha hostility. The clan elder accepted while the Uchiha were leaderless and politically vulnerable 2. Renye's Senju ties led many clan members to treat him as a traitor, culminating in Tanaka expelling him and forbidding further contact 16 84.

Hawk rebellion crisis

Growing anger over the Uchiha's lack of political authority allowed the Hawks to attract nearly one-third of the clan's Jonin 339. Kagami exposed the conspiracy to Tobirama, who distinguished the radicals from the clan as a whole and initially sought a restrained response 268.

After the Hawks attacked Renye, he revealed his Mangekyo Sharingan and Susanoo, killing their leader and fifteen Hawk Jonin. The display intimidated the remaining clan members and halted the rebellion, though Danzō prevented further killings 385 386.

Alternate-timeline extermination

In another timeline, the Uchiha were relocated, surveilled, and increasingly alienated after fears arose over their ability to control the Nine-Tails. Their attempted coup ended in the clan's extermination five years before Edo Hashirama, Tobirama, Madara, and Izuna arrived in Konoha 666 667.

Hiruzen accepted responsibility for the village's role in creating the distrust that led to the disaster. Tobirama and Hashirama stated that they would have arrested the coup faction rather than exterminating the entire clan 667.
