Background
The sect's recorded founder is Huang Yongzhen, who established the sect on Dazhu Ridge of Wulong Mountain ninety-eight years before Liu Xiaolou investigated its lineage. Huang later renamed the site Qianzhu Ridge. His first disciple was Zheng Shi, posthumously known as “Three Xuan,” who eventually succeeded him as Sect Master. Zheng Shi later accepted Liu Xiaolou as his disciple. The sect was formally entered into the sect register with Wulong Mountain designated as its gate. 410
The sect's early history was poorly preserved. Liu Xiaolou and his late master possessed almost no written records, and Liu only learned the name of Huang Yongzhen and the founding date through local stewards. 410
A separate Jianghu rumor claims that the sect's founder had been a Cave Heaven Master of Luofu Mountain who left two centuries earlier amid internal strife. Dongyang Sect figures could not verify the story, and Liu Xiaolou later found only circumstantial similarities between the sect's techniques and Luofu-lineage methods. 2 316 321
For much of its recent history, the Three Xuan Sect was a single-lineage inheritance. Liu Xiaolou initially described himself as its sole member: Sect Master, elder, disciple, and steward alike. 341
Teachings & Inheritance
The Three Xuan
The sect's name refers to three principal arts:
- Bewitching Incense — refined and employed through the Mili Scripture.
- Yin Yang Union Technique — a dual-cultivation method which Liu Xiaolou teaches as a mutually beneficial, orthodox practice.
- Cultivation Profound Arts — represented principally by the Xuanzhen Scripture. 41 348
“Righteousness benefits both Yin and Yang. Evil harms one to supplement the other.” 348
Three Xuan Scriptures
| Scripture | Function |
|---|---|
| Xuanzhen Scripture | The sect's primary cultivation method and Liu Xiaolou's core inheritance. |
| Mili Scripture | Method for refining and using Bewitching Incense. |
| Yin Yang Scripture | Dual-cultivation scripture retained as part of the sect inheritance. 21 |
The Three Xuan Scripture begins by cultivating the Hand Taiyin, Hand Yangming, and Foot Taiyin meridians, then proceeds to the Foot Yangming Meridian in the second layer. This unusually distributed approach is intended to create a balanced foundation, but is more difficult than conventional methods. 10
Liu Xiaolou later learned that the Xuanzhen Scripture is incomplete. Preserving the sect's path beyond Foundation Establishment requires finding compatible supplementary manuals, particularly methods for nurturing a flying sword. 300
Healing Reputation
The sect is known in Wulong Mountain for treating difficult and private ailments through its Yin Yang arts. Liu Xiaolou specifies that its methods address ailments of the mind rather than physical illnesses and does not guarantee a cure. 428
Territory & Facilities
- Wulong Mountain — formally granted to the Three Xuan Sect after Liu Xiaolou's contributions at Jinting Mountain; the grant established its legitimate mountain foundation. 409
- Qianzhu Ridge mountain gate — marked by a stone stele bearing the sect name and rebuilt into a proper sect compound. 411
- Sect compound — includes a main house, Sutra Repository, guest rooms, kitchen, woodshed, spiritual-fowl room, pond, and later a Council Hall. 412 423
- Sutra Repository — protected by an Illusion-Alert Formation and later supported by the Mother-Child Illusory Formation. 412 455
- Twelve Yin Yang Grand Formation — mountain-protecting formation expanded from six yang formations to a balanced set of six yang and six yin formations. 522
- Wuchao Market — the sect acts as its nominal master, while the Jingxiang Six Sects retain the underlying authority. 591
Foundation
The sect's secular foundation consists of four villages within Wulong Mountain's territory: over two hundred households and roughly nine hundred residents. The villages provide taxes, labor, and potential disciples, while the sect is expected to protect them. 416
Liu Xiaolou waived the first year's land taxes after the sect's formal rebuilding, while paying villagers for labor used in construction. This secured broad local support for the new mountain gate. 416
The sect's resources improved substantially after its Qinling expedition. Its spirit-stone reserves exceeded one thousand, in addition to annual subsidies from the Six Sects, allowing Liu Xiaolou to begin formally recruiting elders and disciples. 522
Membership & Governance
- Liu Xiaolou — fifth-generation Sect Master; rebuilt the sect's legal standing, territory, infrastructure, and public influence. 41 409
- Lin Shuangyu — guest elder; created the first “Guest Elder” tokens and used the sect's name to enable South Sea Sword Sect disciples to participate in the Dongting conflict. 341
- Wu Changgeng — guest elder alongside Lin Shuangyu. 348
- Han Gao — taught the sect's Yin Yang Technique and later joins as a guest elder. 348 642
- Fang Buai — elder and sword cultivator who reached Foundation Establishment, giving the sect a second Foundation Establishment cultivator. 633 638
- Zhou Tong — Liu Xiaolou's senior disciple; first accepted as an official disciple, then formally took Liu as his master. 522 633
- Yellow Sheep Girl — fourth-generation disciple and eldest junior sister of her cohort. 638
New disciples begin as outer disciples and learn from the Sect Master, elders, and senior disciples. Formal master-disciple relationships are generally delayed until a disciple reaches mid-stage Qi Refining. 638
Major Arcs
Use of the Sect Name in the Dongting Great Battle
Lin Shuangyu recruited three guest elders under the Three Xuan Sect's name so that South Sea Sword Sect disciples could participate in the war despite Luofu Mountain's opposition. The sect's contingent later served with the Zhanglong Sect forces, with the South Sea Sword Sect members achieving a notable strike against a Golden Core cultivator while fighting under the Three Xuan Sect banner. 341 362
Recognition and Rebuilding
Following Liu Xiaolou's service at Jinting Mountain, the Three Xuan Sect received Wulong Mountain as its official foundation. Liu erected a gate stele, built a sect compound on Qianzhu Ridge, recorded the sect's lineage, and registered members for subsidies. 409 410 411 416
Defense of Wulong Mountain
The growing sect attracted challengers and opportunists. Zhou Tong repelled a would-be guardian who attacked the mountain gate, while Fang Buai and other sect members defended Qianzhu Ridge against Guan Li's assault. 549 551
When the Gui Tang Huang clan captured Three Xuan Sect disciples, Liu Xiaolou led a raid on Wufu Village, demanding their release. The resulting battle forced the Huang clan to submit to the sect's authority and hand over its household register for punishment. 700 701 710
Expansion Through Disciples and Dependents
After Zhou Tong became Liu Xiaolou's formal disciple, the sect began assessing children from nearby villages for recruitment. It also expanded its network of affiliated families, including the Tan family, which sought the sect's protection and cultivation resources. 632 634 710
