Geography and Landmarks
Wulong Mountain occupies a broad, rugged territory shaped by cliffs, gorges, waterfalls, bamboo groves, and miasmic lowlands. From Qianzhu Ridge, its surrounding ranges resemble a coiled black dragon, with Qianzhu Ridge positioned at the dragon's eye and the Wu Chao River appearing to bind its body. 218

| Location | Details |
|---|---|
| Qianzhu Ridge | The Three Xuan Sect's original foundation and Liu Xiaolou's residence. It stands at the “dragon eye” of the mountain's larger geomantic layout. 218 411 |
| Ghost Dream Cliff | Former cultivation site of Wei Hongqing; its cliff and pool contain a secret cave. In the mountain's geomantic profile, it resembles a beast's maw. 218 282 |
| Dragon Horse Waterfall | A former dwelling area later left in ruins. A concealed passage through a rock crevice connects its cave halls to another waterfall. 282 708 |
| Half-Acre Gorge | Former cultivation ground of Zuo Gaofeng; its entrance was largely blocked by a mountain flood after the mountain's abandonment. 282 |
| Tiankeng Drum | A collapsed pit over half a li across, roughly a li in circumference, and twenty zhang deep. It was the site of the demon-vine battle. 65 |
| Jade Maiden Peak | A high vantage point used to observe activity within the mountain during the Qingyu Sect occupation. 63 64 |
Miasma
- Grass Miasma originates around Tiankeng Drum.
- Yellow Plum Miasma occurs near Shihua Cave.
- Both are relatively weak: they can confuse insects and small animals, but do not seriously affect larger beasts. 339
- Frequent fog and miasma can obstruct cultivators' true-essence perception, making careful observation more reliable than spiritual sensing in parts of the mountain. 63
History
The Three Xuan Sect was founded on Qianzhu Ridge nearly a century before Liu Xiaolou's later leadership, though it remained weak and lacked recognition among established sects. Historical records state that Wulong Mountain once had several Foundation Establishment cultivators. Sixty-six years earlier, a battle killed two of them alongside a Qi Refining cultivator, breaking the mountain's backbone; no further Foundation Establishment cultivators emerged there for decades. 409 411
For much of its recent history, Wulong Mountain served as a refuge for independent cultivators, fugitives, and outlaws. Its inhabitants were decentralized but fiercely protective of the mountain and each other, with cultivators gathering from sites such as Longshan, Ghost Dream Cliff, Dragon Horse Waterfall, Half-Acre Gorge, and Five Sons Peak. 4 25 225
Following conflict among the Jingxiang Six Sects, Wulong Mountain was designated a boundary mountain where major sects were not supposed to ascend freely. Wuchao Market was established on the mountain as a shared foundation intended to ease sectarian tensions, with the Three Xuan Sect made its nominal master. 232 590
During the Qingyu Sect's occupation, Zhanglong Sect forces launched an operation into Wulong Mountain. Qingyu Sect cultivators used a Mountain God Manifestation to patrol and capture intruders, while a colossal demon vine appeared at Tiankeng Drum and was destroyed in a violent battle. 63 64 65
Lu Yuanlang of Tianmu Mountain later violated the boundary-mountain rule, seized more than fifty Wulong Mountain cultivators, and executed several during his search for Wei Hongqing. The massacre shattered the mountain's sense of safety and began an irreconcilable conflict between the surviving rogue cultivators and Tianmu Mountain. 230 232 239
The Wulong Mountain cultivators retaliated by attacking Baiye Mountain Manor, breaking its protective formation and striking Tianmu Mountain's Lu family. Tianmu Mountain subsequently conducted widespread searches and encirclements, forcing many Wulong Mountain cultivators to flee or die. 247 248 255 258
After three years away, Liu Xiaolou returned to find the mountain deserted. Former residences, including those at Ghost Dream Cliff, Half-Acre Gorge, Dragon Horse Waterfall, Guzhang Mountain, Jade Maiden Cave, and Calligraphy Ridge, had fallen into ruin. At Tian Gu Pit, he found a monument naming fellow cultivators who had died at Mount Tianmu. 282
Liu Xiaolou restored activity at Qianzhu Ridge by activating a formation with three merged Sect Master tokens, revealing a spiritual-energy source. He also planted Ghost Banyan seeds along the mountain paths. 282
After Liu Xiaolou's contribution to the Zhanglong Sect's victory at Dongbai Peak, Sect Master Qu formally granted Wulong Mountain to the Three Xuan Sect and publicly placed it under Zhanglong Sect protection. The mountain was later entered into the mountain foundation record under the Three Xuan Sect, which was recognized as a minor sect of Zhanglong Sect. 363 408
Formations and Feng Shui
Liu Xiaolou's surveys identified several linked malevolent formations around Qianzhu Ridge. Although dangerous in structure, cultivating within their influence accelerated his progress. 218
| Formation | Anchoring terrain | Known effect |
|---|---|---|
| Bing Ding Approaching Teng Snake Clashing Light Evil Formation | Summit of Qianzhu Ridge | Part of the interconnected evil-formation network. |
| Geng Approaching White Tiger Clashing White Tiger Evil Formation | Bamboo forest beneath Qianzhu Ridge | Strengthens the formation pattern around the ridge. |
| Heavenly Pillar Evil Formation | Two ancient pines at the entrance path to Liu Xiaolou's courtyard | Forms another node in the local geomantic structure. |
| Dragon Binding Malevolent Formation | The dragon-shaped mountain terrain and the Wu Chao River | The river appears to bind the mountain's coiled-dragon configuration. |
These formations were identified during Liu Xiaolou's survey of the mountain. 218
Twelve Yin Yang Grand Formation
The mountain-protecting Twelve Yin Yang Grand Formation was upgraded through Liu Xiaolou's study of ancient formations and runes. Its six original yang formations were retained, while the six yin formations were to be reinforced with ancient rune knowledge and local terrain. 522
- The six yin sub-arrays incorporate the Wulong Talisman, Three Xuan Talisman, Lotus Creek Talisman, Siming Talisman, Xuezhai Rune, and Xiaolou Talisman. 522
- The design draws upon Qianzhu Ridge's dragon-like terrain, the pine, bamboo, and banyan vegetation, seasonal flow of the Wu Chao River, solar and lunar cycles, winter snow, and lightning within mountain clefts. 522
- Liu Xiaolou estimated that combining the revised yin formations with the original yang formations would at least double the grand formation's power. 522
- When Lu Yuanlang entered the grand formation and cleared six formations, the Wuya Formation reappeared; he escaped with a candle lamp rather than breaking through directly. Jing Zhao then ordered him never to return to Wulong Mountain. 418
Governance and Settlement
- Three Xuan Sect — The mountain's present governing sect. Its authority rests on Sect Master Qu's grant and the later mountain foundation record. 363 408
- Zhanglong Sect — Historically regarded Wulong Mountain as its territory and later granted it to Liu Xiaolou's sect while offering protection against Tianmu Mountain. 363
- Gengsang Cave — A major stakeholder in the mountain's boundary status. It opposed any arrangement that would compromise Wulong Mountain's neutrality by turning it into another sect's direct territorial extension. 413
- Wuchao Market — Established as a shared foundation of the Jingxiang Six Sects, with the Three Xuan Sect as nominal master rather than exclusive owner. 590
- Nearby villages — Villagers do not pay farming taxes to Wulong Mountain; instead, they bring grain, cured meat, cloth, and firewood as New Year offerings. 608
Legacy
Nearly half of Wulong Mountain's former cultivators scattered after Tianmu Mountain's campaigns, while dozens were killed by Lu Yuanlang and further groups died in later Tianmu Mountain traps. By Liu Xiaolou's account, nine out of ten former cultivation pavilions were lost, leaving the Three Xuan Sect as the principal inheritor of the mountain's legacy. 713
- Wulong Mountain's earlier reputation as a bandit refuge persists in outside accounts, though visitors such as Ye Qingxiu found the restored mountain unexpectedly pleasant. 620
- Big White and Little Black patrol and inhabit Qianzhu Ridge, where they help maintain its warning-vine and wind-chime system. 192
- The Wulong Talisman is an ancient formation rune named by Liu Xiaolou after he encountered it during his studies of lost runic traditions. 521
